From my experience:
- Lots, lots of russians (wtf!) - Many germans and US - some from france and scandinavia - no spanish, italians, greeks... - no one from Japan (wtf!) - no one from south-america
Im specially wondering why there are not Japanese folks. C'mon, they are nerds by definition, this game should be full of them.
why there are not mediterranean players. Its not like we are in feudal age... there are computers and cable lines, etc. and people play other mmo like wow, guild wars, and so.
and seriously... wassup with all the russians LOL!!!

EVE must be advertised on russian television or something. Though other than the massive amount of russians around, I have to disagree with you; I find people of people of many different nationalities, including japanese.

Oddly enough, even with no players from Japan, there is still a Japanesse language link for the website.
CCP appears to optimistic on attracting them...eventually.

I know at least one Italian in-game. I had someone from South America in my corp.
I've seen one or two Japanese. I guess EVE doesn't have bright, colorful Mecha and pretty, anime-looking characters so it's not that popular there?
Anyway, there are people in EVE from those countries, but maybe not very many.

There has to be a critical mass of people from a particular language group so that the reputation of a game starts to spread through word of mouth.
Not just getting RL friends involved, but posting on forums not related to games, gamers playing other games and bringing in clan/guild mates from those into Eve
And also that there is a sizeable community, and one easily found and accessable.
There are multiple high profile and successful Russian corps and alliances to choose from for any Russian wanting to try out Eve, and have been right from the early days of Eve.
Now there is even a russian language client, making it even easier for Russian speakers to play. (Remember also that probably most Ukrainians and Belorussians speak Russian or understand it at least)
Clearly the same ball just never got rolling in Japan, hence why the strange variation in player nationalities

Thats the problem with percentagewise statistics. They never show the whole truth. Thats why you have the phrase Lies, damn lies and statistics.
I bet you will find people from many other nationalities in this game too, but not in such ammount that they peak on the statistic.

Edited by: Pesets on 07/01/2010 04:50:27 There are some Japanese in Eve. But there are tons of Japanese MMOs too, so most of them are probably too busy playing those (as well as working/studying/that kind of thing).
And what's your problem with russians anyways?

I start playing at around 6 eve time and quit around downtime.
Sure seems like a lot of ausies playing to me ; ) .
The russian pressence is pretty astounding to me.. but I think thats outsized in its focus in certain regions.. especially in 0.0 .. feels like 40% sometimes given my hours and where a given character hangs out.
I still haven't figured out if these Russians break down in the same demographic groups as a US players ... and gee, isn't it a heck of a lot harder to earn playing time in their currency? i.e doesn't $13 a month US feel to them as it might feel for us to pay like $60 a month ?
I gotta dig through the quarterly reports to see how the whole game population breaks down into age groups. How many are kis, how many are univerity students..how many 20 somethings, How many are 30 -40 ish moms and dads, and how many granpas.. etc

I AM Mexican!!!!!
In my opinion, most people who play games try to find them in their own language, even if they suck.
But I can have the best of 2 worlds, suck it b****!!
also you must consider the fact that, like me, other people will speak on the most common language even if they are not from the country, so its not entirely accurate to say who plays and who doesn't. SAVE those who are defenseless and innocent... KILL EVERYONE ELSE!

You can still connect to TQ in China without proxies etc (I played for 3 months whilst in the PRC np), you're just not meant to, and would probably get problems if you weren't a foreigner
Wow got taken off the market in China for various beaurocratic technicalities. They were apparently losing $1m a day in lost revenues, but that was 6 months ago. The problem is that the Chinese authorities want a) control over MMO content and more importantly b) want chinese companies to be the ones making the money, not foriegn companies
Add to that MMO addiction and you cna see why the CPC are only happy to shut them down
There is a rule as well that media companies have to be at least 50% owned by chinese (or 50% of the joint venture must be chinese), which breaks WTO rules
This is the reason there has to be a second server for China, but it only really has a -ve effect on Eve since Eve is meant to be 1 server 1 universe, and foreign companies who are forced to split profits and control of their games
As for other Asian nations, it's hard to say, but probably to do again with the 'having a big enough community' thing. Also western MMO's will look to the english speaking market first and often the games are initially made in English. So it makes little sense to market the game, promote it etc in Asian countries
Whereas games made in Korea or Japan for their respective domestic markets don't exactly make it big in the rest of the world for the very same reasons. I'd put cultural differences right at the bottom of the pile. Sure they're important but a good game or good story will have universal appeal
