A Call to the People of the World to Support Iceland Against Financial Blackmail El Linko (What's the story on the ground?)

Like all news/op ed pieces, it's always best to hear from the people closest to it. Anyone in Iceland have more information on this?

What happens in Iceland might set a precedent that the US can follow (if the US is not the country that bombs Iceland into democracy....oh wait....)

Brit*** here, go for Iceland, it's not like our government has anybodies interest in mind other than themselves.

That's not sarcasm by the way, as it may read.

Gah, what drivel, about as factual as Rupert Murdoch's media and about as much sense.

Yeah... featured on a website that is no friend of Murdoch. Check your background info.

Politics? Who wants this locked? They paying bloggers to infect these forums too? I just want to learn from the people actually IN Iceland. Is that political? Or maybe I should just use the internet to surf for smut, keep my mouth shut, and let people who think they are smarter run my life for me.

I found infowars is about as reliable a source and unbiased as listening to Glenn Beck. About as sane as well.

Defulting on debt simply because its part of a bank you nationised is a dangerous precident and with an election looming the british government may well freeze all remaining icelandic assets in the country. I think it has to be renegotiated to prevent serious pain on both sides.

I didn't say it was an RM site did I? I said it's about as factual as, an opposite of the same coin. Check your comprehension skills lately?

Pretty funny seeing all the american support for this because it's Britain asking for the debt to be paid when we all pretty much know that Iceland would right now be "Harbouring terrorists" or "Developing dangerous new weapons to destroy freedom" if the debt was being recalled by the US

The bankers here have ruined our country, don't let it happen to you too!

We're barely recovering from a recession, with a massive national debt.
To be fair on the bankers though, they exploited the stupidity of the government more than anything. The UK would have been in shambles even without their 'help'.

So because Iceland is a small country it's unfair. That's kinda what that whole bullcrap of "the terrorist act they imposed on us", "The spin is failing" and "full of misleading news, saying the nation had demanded not to pay, and that we would become isolated" comes down to.

Your government is responsible for your banking system, if they "forgot" to make sure it wasn't a soap bubble then it's their/your own fault. Governments are liable for a certain portion of the banking losses IF such a thing would occur. Two countries who stepped in to make sure your country could actually make true on your responsibilities regarding this are not happy that you don't want to pay them back, and that's somehow THEIR fault...

If you're not happy with the situation (and I can't blame you) go bang on the doors of the people who govern/control/check your banking system, NOT the ones who lent you cash to keep you afloat in the first place.

Yes how dare they deposit money in a bank and then expect it back after Iceland promised they'd repay it!

I agree that the article is very clearly biased, but at the same time... Iceland doesn't deserve to be a third-world country, either. If Britain were to "flex its muscles", to use its Navy to make a show of force against a country with no military...that would be shameful.

It's only 5.4bn dollars, that's change to a country like the UK. They should be given an extension for their loan to pay back.

Actually, We could use 5.4 bill pretty bad right now.

And picking on small weak countries so we can take their stuffs is what we've been doing since the Black Prince said, hey this wine is good, where do they make the stuff? Aquitaine, you say...?

yer.. about the 5.4 bn not being much to the UK thing. The political situation in the uk means every pound is being considered much more important than it in fact is. An election must occur before the end of june and letting 5.4bn slip away is a political shot to the head.
