As a new player (only little bit over 3M skill points trained) I have been a little confused about exploration based on articles, post and blogs I have found so far. Most of them are pretty old (2007-2010) and I have been wonder are those relevant anymore. So decided to make a post here.
Latest blog I found out was this one which tries to proof that even a new char can make 350M in a 10 days or so...I don't know is that true or not if you really running solo and without start money for a gear and skills http://explorationalmanac.blogspot.com/2010/07/day-11-next-goal-achived-some-isk-made.html
So my question is: Is exploration worth of time to spend for a new char in hi-sec space if you most likely run without helpers (alts or real players)? I know it is luck based and sometimes you get lucky and sometimes not but after some research on forums and internet it seems it is nowdays either nerfed OR it is so popular that it is hard to find even sites to explore. I have been tested this also a little without luck (not enough to take a sides) so far altough my equipments and skills should be good enough for this job.
And if we talking about ISK/hour I want to give you some perspective. I have been playing now only a few months and most of my time so far I have been mining or doing mining missions. Have lost a few newbie ships but mostly tried to play pretty much risk free on hi-sec space. Currently have only about 20M on my wallet and playing randomly hour or two sometimes. A quite a big portion of my money has been spent to fit a basic miner and other ships. Money of course spend to skill books.
So I'm not looking for a billions or even 10M per a run. For me even 5M would be a good and 1M would be better what I getting currently. So obviously I'm doing something wrong if someone can do with a trial account in a 10 days 350M worth of ISK or even a near and is is repeatable.
And I know ISK is not everything...but it seems to help on this game also.

This guy was pretty experienced. However, itsdefinitely possible for a new explorer.
Quote:So my question is: Is exploration worth of time to spend for a new char in hi-sec space if you most likely run without helpers (alts or real players)?
This is something only you can decide. Some find it is, some find it isn't. Its a personal thing.
Quote: I know it is luck based and sometimes you get lucky and sometimes not but after some research on forums and internet it seems it is nowdays either nerfed OR it is so popular that it is hard to find even sites to explore.
There has been exactly 1 instance of "bugged" exploration stuff in the past 2 years. Every other post about "omg I got nothing after all that work" or "I did 4 DED 4/10s this weeks and got nothing whereas in the past its always been 1 in 4 drops something good!" is complete crap. These people do not understand how random actually works, how statistics work, and thus do not understand how the exploration mechanics work.
Quote:And if we talking about ISK/hour I want to give you some perspective.
We're not. There is no isk/hr in exploration. Don't listen to people that say they have a set route that always has a certain amount of sites and drops and thus gives them a specific isk/hr. They want to believe there is an isk/hr in exploration to justify their time doing it. They are wrong. Exploration is about treasure hunting. If the things we found were constantly found, they would not be rare and thus they would have no value. In exploration, you will get lots of nothing, but eventually, you will hit jackpot. Sometimes you'll hit in between, but eventually, you'll get lucky and score big.
My advice to you. Look for radars and mags for now. Check out Khanid space. Its a nice small region and not too many people. You may be able to run some Hideouts and Lookouts as well, unrated combat sites that have a chance to "escalate," or in other words send you on an expedition that will hopefully continue to escalate and eventually take you to a chance at a nice jackpot.
Being in high sec, you will find a lot of wormholes. This sucks but it happens as a result of wormhole dwellers constantly trying to come back to high sec for whatever reason.
Good luck, realize that exploration is something unique, and have fun. |

First off, I love that blog, really great stuff.
Secondly, yes you COULD make 350M in one day with a 10 day character, but this all depends on random loot.
Highsec Radars should net you have netted me on average 8 to 10M per site (taking into account sites with all the cans empty and ones with above average drops) Highsec combats will net you anything from a sour taste of disappointment to hundreds of millions per site.
All in all while it's possible to get 350M in a single highsec site, I caution you to never ever count on being able to do it, or even expect it to drop that much. You have a random chance of their being sites in your system, then a random chance of them being good, then a random chance of being able to get loot, then the random chance that the loot is even good... which is why it's addictive like gambling :)
tl;dr: Try it, it's fun
PS: Keep a look out for static DED plexes (ones that appear on your overview) like Old Meanie Cultivation something, Sansha Military Outpost etc. The 1/10 rated ones respawn every hour and are designed to be done in a frigate. Problem is finding one that isn't constantly being "attended" to by someone else :P |

[Edit] i write too slow ...[/Edit]
What 5nipe did was farm radars pretty much from day one. He knew what he was doing and as such the 'claim' to be able to afford a PLEX out of the starting 21 days was doable.
I am not sure if you can apply this to nowadays tho. PLEX prices are up from when he did this, and i theorize that it is maybe not that easy anymore to find radars in highsec (more competition). Add to that the fact that he knew which strips of space to pick for his endeavor - which a truly 'new' player will need time to find out.
I still think that it could be a very viable course to take for a starting out pilot, especially since you don't need great character skills to do this. You can start earning money while you train for flying better ships to be able to get into combat complexes for instance. |

i've made a plex on a 2 week trial twice now, 1 year ago when plexes were 300 mil and now, end of july, i had alot time on my hands though, so should you if you want to do it, it's definetly worth it, it's most money you can make being new really, but it all depends on how much time you have and if you're completely new to the game, i was new to exploration alone when i made for a plex with the first account, it's nothing like being new to the whole game
again, if you want to make enough for a plex, it's going to take time or luck, overall it's still good money, alot better if you're not a trial |

As it's been stated before, that blog is amazing. A little outdated, but the information on setting up your skills and ships are dead on. I started this character on a 21 day trial and followed that blog and when I'm actually trying I can get enough isk for a plex roughly every 2-3 weeks solely from radar sites, probably more if I did the combat sites. At the very least give it a try, its something to do inbetween mining/missions while you wait for the skills to train to do better stuff.
You might get frustrated finding a site after a searching for an hour only to warp in and find a lot of yellow wrecks and empty cans, but when you get in and find four or five decryptors worth about 20-25 mil(rather rare), for a new player that's pretty awesome imo.
Only tip I might add, try it at various times throughout the days. In the systems I scan I tend to find the sites piling up at certain times of the day and other times I'm lucky to find an empty one. |

Any suggestions for ships and fits for newbie (Gallente/Caldari) for this career? For scanning I'll use Imicus for now and I'll have Osprey because of my mining career and collected this kind of fitting for exploring and for mining missions allready. Is it enough for lower level sites?

I'm sure you'll see some Vexor ideas here, but I'd go with something more like this:

Swap to T1/meta level stuff if you can't fit it all. Adjust hardeners based on the rats you're up against. I suggest probing with this versus having another ship to do it for you as this means you can go straight to the site. With level 3 skills, the 2 scanning rigs and eventually a sisters launcher (and maybe probes) you'll be able to scan in high sec just fine. You may want to look into a pph-0 implant as well. They are pretty cheap and add 3% to scan strength. |

I am glad to hear that people still read my blog, which is a bit outdated, since I wrote it more than year ago.
I wrote it with intentions to show that there are some opportunities for new player enjoy the game and make decent ISK in Hi sec without running missions or mining.
Some people accused me that whole thing is a plot and nothing more that propaganda, because they can't find any radars at all. Some people followed blog, got into exploration as dedicated profession and made tons of ISKs. It is all depends on patience, efforts and luck.
I didn't scan in hi sec for a while. Scanning mechanics were changed drastically. More people scanning now, as far as I know. Tengu became de facto standard ship for exploration, especially for hi sec. It is more competitive now.
Can new toon ( single account ) survive and make enough nowdays?
Should I rewrite the blog now and test it? |

It would be nice to know indeed. Start with a fresh toon less than 1M ISK, no corp support, no alts. Also would like to know how many hours spent during test for playing. Test period could be for example five to ten days. You have to gather your equipments and skill books from open market.
It would be great to know what can be done with real life skills and knowledge. |

You're a new enough player and I'm sure you could fit those parameters.
Why don't you do it? It would be a great asset to the exploration community hearing from a true new player with all of those limitations rather than an older player emulating it (not that that wouldn't be helpful, but having a truly new player do it would provide an extremely different perspective). |

Yes, it is very possible. Once I made about 1.5B in the space of two weeks exploring in highsec (I will admit that it was with a fairly experienced character in an Assault Frig, but only a couple hundred M was made in sites that would have been really hard to run in a T1 frig/destroyer/cruiser instead).
Exploration takes dedication, patience, and some decent RL skills, but it can pay off big time if you stick with it. I know a fairly new character that liked the sound of exploring from me talking about it so he took a Heron out looking for sites. He made nothing for the first week and then about 50-100M over the course of a couple days, there's lots of hit or miss luck.
And if you're starting off with low skills, it might be easiest to stick to Radars, they provide the most consistent income (average of 10-15M per site) with the least effort (never more than 10 rats in frigs in highsec). |

It is very fare comment.
First of all I have about 2 years of exploration behind my belt. I know where and how to scan. I know how to run each radar/plex at least in Guristas low and hi sec space. I know how to make start up ISKs to finance exploration venture straight away. I know how to utilize 3 available slots on one account, etc...
I have no problem to show all "little secrets" to new players. The thing is, some of techniques is quiet difficult to follow and understand for very new player.
Do brand new players read the forum? Honestly, I didn't for few month.
I definitely can dive it a try. It still all about fun at the end of the day.
P.S. I made about 1.4 bil ISK as donation from my exploration blog and few really good friends. I am open for offers :-)

Hmm..not a bad idea. I'll think about that.
I'll anyway going to give a try for exploring so I could documented that also for awhile. Exploring was one of my initial career plans along with mining when started this game.

Okay. It was just an idea that NOS could help with cap but that idea was not tested yet. Remote armour rep was for drones yes. I thought I could repair those during the fight by calling them back and send back to the fight after repair. It was just a theory and not tested yet.

Forget about magneto sites in hi sec. It is waist of time compare to radars. Ofc you can get t2 salvage here and there eventually, but it is more like fun, rather than profitable venture.
Low sec is a bit different story, but still nothing close to other opportunities low sec offer for explorers.

I decided to start exploration with my main 2 weeks ago. My skills are not brilliant for scanning but i manage ok for now, managed to scan down multiple combat sites - although they all (upto now) have been really poor sites with only frigs, 1 mag site and a single radar site. Managed to grab 15m of loot from 3 of the 5 cans at the radar before a cheetah appeared on grid and grabbed the remaining 2 cans contents, the mag site gave about about 6m.
Not sure if he'd scanned the site down himself like me, or if he'd scanned me down, but anyway, upto now its not been a big pay off, but judging by the comments from everyone, its all random so im not throwing in the towel just yet.
Actually i have a question, of the guides ive read, it stated radars are gaurded by NPC's, but the one i found was not, so, do NPC's only gaurd low/null radars? |

I've come upon people running sites, particularly DED 4/10. I overheat my afterburner and get there before them and take the loot.

What ship/setup you currently use for scanning and running the sites? Also I would like to know how you determ which sites you ignore during the scanning phase because you "know" those a propably too hard for your skills and setup?
Radar sites might or might not be guarded so those are most likely 'easy' on hi-sec? Which sites newbies should avoid and let more skilled players to handle? |

Somebody already said its luck based. Its like taking a deck of cards, shuffling and picking the top most card. After every pick of card you shuffle the deck again. If you do this long enough sometimes youll get aces several times in a row yet you get garbage a lot of times. Never think of exploration as ISK/Hour activity. Rather think of it as ISK per fun activity. You travel more, you learn the market better if you want to maximise isk, youll meet different baddies and good guys in the process.
Also it depends what your goal is. I recommend set your goal pretty low for starters. I started out with exploration quite a long time ago. Did high sec, went low sec, eventually found my current corp and started blasting wormholes. My goal has always been rather simple one. Always to have enough isk to replace the ship i fly in. I.E if i fly a 6 mil arbitrator i want at least 6mil on my character. I pay with actual money for my account not ISK so im not the slave of "oh god must grind loads of iskies for next plex". So when i do hit a 30 mil site in low sec or wh im jumping for joy like a madman.
Also ive lost a LOADS of ships learning to survive low sec. My best recommendation would be to get yourself in a dirt cheap *insert your racial* frigate or cruiser with t1 fit and hit low sec at the bare minimum ASAP and forget high sec. Expect to lose 10 of those ship on the first day and dont get downed by it. Look map really hard to find out about the systems in low sec and where to scan. Look activities/kills different kinds of statistics and and hit the less popular ones. Low sec sites are very often overestimated, most of them can be easily done in a cruiser if you fit correct hardeners and they have considerably less stuff to kill compared to high sec missions. Though id train cloaking to at least 1 (takes what 20 minutes?) as sort of "prerequisite" for low sec. |

If you were to rewrite the blog, i'd suggest not taking the Imicus, i used it at first too, but that's because i was focusing only on Magnetometric and Radar sites, but if you skip the Salvager and Analyzer, you can easily put together a combat destroyer or a frigate that'll clear Hideouts and Lookouts, it's not worth skipping those and you can clear them with minimum SP. |

Ofc I have motivation. :-)
I am not sure if rewriting hi sec exploration blog is my top priority atm.
Even been outdated Hi sec Exploration Almanac still gives new people good idea what is exploration is about in general and how to start it as mini-profession.
Important thing with exploration, as mini-profession, is the fact that it is became as boring as any other PvE content at some point, especially in hi sec. Yes, you can made lot of ISKs, became virtual billionaire, and this is pretty much all. Personally I have found DED hunting in hi sec as boring as running missions.
Low sec is a bit different story, not only that you can make more ISKs, but mostly it is a bit of thrill. Life and operation in low sec is nothing close to hi sec, and very different to 0.0. If you do exploration right way, it is a lot of fun, very entertaining and can be extremely profitable.
I am planning my next little project to answer the one of most common question: how much you can make in low sec. I mean, is it worth to go there, risk your ship and pod? Risk/Profit in low sec was the question floating around for awhile.
You can't increase profit on your own while, but you can drastically reduce risks.
And this is another project I have in mind. Sort of "survival guide" for people who wants to get theirs fits wet in low sec. I have read tons of materials how to operate in low sec. Lot of good tips here and there, but bottom line of the most advices: "clak+mwd trick".
I spent almost a year (starting right after I wrote Almanac) in low sec dedicated to another mini-profession: "low sec pirate". Do not be confused, I did it with my alts. So, I want to write how to avoid PvP in low sec (actually avoiding PvP still part of PvP) from "pirate" point of view.
Yet another thing I willing to do is to show people how to burn theirs pathetic wealth they made with exploration. It can be introduction into PvP in low sec for the guys who wants blood, but have no idea where the vein is.
That is pretty much I have in mind for next few month.
I never wrote any blogs before, and Almanac dragged me from casual plying almost into full time job (not for a long tho :-) ). Assembling materials, writing texts, photoshop screenshots and editing videos can be very time consuming. And producing quality content requires big deal of effort. So I think about some rewards in return. I don't want to pump my project with ads all over pages, so I do my little research about possibility of subscription/donation/sponsorship. Not that I loose any sleep if I can't get any (Ad Words still the option) but potential prospective of "making fortune" out of ads always keeps me motivated.
In any event, I am opened for any questions or suggestions to keep me in right direction and deliver entertaining reading.
cheers

seriously. +10% on scan strength for nothing but money/LP+money is nothing to sneeze at. And your standing with the SOE should be ok if you ran through the first Epic Arc. |

Thanks for the tip. I found out that those probes are on open market also (300k+). Or where should I buy those? My standing is good for SOE...if I checked right.

I didn't read all the responses to this thread but I just wanted to add my two cents about Exploration in case any new players are reading this.
If you like the idea of exploration but find it frustrating because it is taking you forever to scan stuff down (and half the time it ends up being unstable wormholes) I recommend putting it on hold until you can train into a Tech 2 exploration ship and until you have trained all of your exploration focused skills up to level 3 at least.
Fit rigs to your new ship (I have an Anathema) and a sisters launcher and probes and the difference in your speed and ability to scan is staggering compared to your old starter exploration ship and gear. It turns it into a fun and fairly profitable endeavor. |

The rig, probes, and launchers that are designed for it really do pay off. My biggest complaint about high-sec exploration when your early into it is a lack of good frigate choices. I wanted a frigate for the job because you can't get much bigger into the combat sites, and the loot is worth it. I also hate switchin out ships or gear, more often than not I find someone else stumbled across the site while I was out.
I ended up going with a freaky Worm with 1 missile launcher, a load of drones, salvager, probe launcher, shield booster, afterburner, analyzer, codebreaker set up. Gravimetric rig, capacitor rig, and a drone velocity rig. Basically in the combat set up you have a stable cap for burner/shield boost which means your a high speed boosting tank, so you're not gonna die while you wait for the drones to kill everything. It works for me until I can get a T2 frigate. |

Please give me better newbie setups if you have one because based of your comment you sound a person who know better. But please don't give a ship + fit setup which costs 2M+ for scanning because I want to follow main rule: "Don't use setups you are not afford to loose". I have about 20M on my wallet currently.
If you refer my scanning setup (Imicus) I stated it is my initial setup because I don't know what I'm against and I don't know all tactics you (speed tanking etc.) altough I know theory of those. And I'm going to adjust that along the road. And if you you refer that Osprey setup that is best what I have currently for this job and don't have another 20M+ to spend new one...currently.
And as long I don't find even single site this is not even relevant. And if I find something then I might have afford to spend some money to new setups.
So feel free to share your knowledge. |

you already got the caracal fitting posted here, why aren't you using that, you need minimum skills to scan, a scanning frigate is an overkill with your skills, with those you can go lowsec with a normal probe launcher and no rigs and find sites without any problems, there's always going to be one mag and radar site you won't scan down anyway in high, rest is reachable, using a scanning frigate means you'll get your sites stolen
the general things are, don't mix tanks, don't put relays if you're putting on a booster, don't put a plate on if you're going to put an overdrive and a shield booster, use proper drones, mixing em and explosive drones makes absoultely no sense, 4 light drones make more dps than 1medium+2 on paper and in game
if your missile skills are this bad then you might aswell train for a cormorant and get some hideouts done too, but caracal's not bad, but get some support skills in missiles
Quote:[Cormorant, New Setup 3] Shield Power Relay II

Small Core Defence Field Purger I Small Core Defence Field Purger I Small Core Defence Field Purger I
this is a cormorant fitting, you need some minimum gunnery skills, i've done angel hideouts and lookouts with a thrasher that had worse stats and angel hideouts are the hardest ones, if you feel like you're having problems then carry annother resist mod and swap for the codebreaker, thermal for serps, annother kinetic for guristas, should be able to get angels done with it too, for that you use explosion and add a kinetic one if necessary. this is based on your other fits, so t2 relay and shield upgrades as in your ships, if you don't like it, swap for t1.
Quote:[Caracal, New Setup 5] Ballistic Control System II Ballistic Control System II

Medium Core Defence Field Extender I Medium Core Defence Field Extender I Medium Core Defence Field Extender I
Hornet I x2
if you can't afford extender rigs, just skip them, use resits and drones according to where you're scanning, get some missile support skills
ofc i'd suggest you go with the cormorant, you get more done in it, doing a watch in a caracal is possible, but probably not with your piloting skills, you'd only be wasting tags, with the cormorant you can do a lookout and a hideout, both can drop good loot, it's good because most people explore in cruisers so there's plenty hideouts left for you and you can always try to do 2/10s if you come across one that isn't camped |

I know my english is not good but I have tried to point out that I don't have enough ISK to buy Caracal or Cormorant setups currently and definetly I don't have enough ISK to loose those setups. So no point to buy something if you can't afford to fly with it...right?
But I want to thank you for those setups. Those seems good fine for me and Caracal fit is near what I have planned with my skill training and those propably will be usefully in a future.
Fabulous Virgil wrote:a scanning frigate is an overkill with your skills
Really? I thought my skills are too low or scanning strength is not enough for this yet.

What you mean with "Don't mix tank"? Could you or someone explain? Why you say that Warrior and Valkyrie drones makes no sense?
Fabulous Virgil wrote:4 light drones make more dps than 1medium+2 on paper and in game
Yes...they makes little more dps according EFT. I had no idea if thats true in a game, but what I know medium drones has more defence at least.

If you have not trained some missile skills at all, I suggest you check out the certificate planner.
For the starter go with Missile control basic Frigate or cruiser launcher control basic (depends on what you are flying)
later if you have time for more training go for ... missile control standard
if you are looking for good skill sets to train for different tasks, I always suggest to check the certificate planner. It provides a very good overview about groups of skills required for different tasks and how they relate to each other.
I find it very helpful.

don't mix active and passive tank in pve, also don't mix shield tank with armor tank, about mixing drones, with sizes it's not so bad, but why would you use explosive and em drones at the same time, it doesn't make much sense, just pick 1 damage type that's best against the rats you'll be shooting, drone defense doesn't matter, just don't launch them untill you get all the enemy ships on you, small drones have better tracking and speed, they're better if you don't sacrifice dps, and you don't
if you want to train missile suport skills, just go to market and in the skills tab, there you have every missile skill, browse through them and train those that help you, like increasing missile flight time, missile damage or launcher rate of fire |

Agreed that was pointless. Those were just place holders on my setup and put in some drones to drone bay what I had on my hangar. I understand that I have to pick right drones based on rats. But that I don't know yet so that will be changed anyway. |

Active and passive tanking are two different tanking methods that not go well together. The problem is that active and passive tanking modules are both mid slot equipment but you need a max number of slots to optimize one ot the tank types. Doing only one very good is better than mixing up both to get a mediocre result.
Active tank uses cap to boost the shield regen and to repair the incoming damage Here the size of shield is not as important as how quickly you can regen shield damage. You use shield boosters and cap regen modules. Mostly done for small ships with small shields: frigates, cruisers
A passive tank uses very large shields in the first place and uses the normal shield regen rate of the ship to replenish it. Here shield szize matters and you use shield extenders to prop it up even further. You also use shield hardeners and resist modules to reduce incoming damage as far as possible. Mostly done with larger ships that have large shields in the first place: BC's and BS's
Passive shield tanks have the highest regen rates when shields are already down (40-60%). So, your ship maybe 2/3's in shields but this makes your passive tank even stronger because shield regen is at its optimal comfort zone.
Mixing this with an active tank that boost shield back to 100% would limit the PT efficiency.

About a year and a half back, when I first started playing Eve, my main income was from exploration. I could easily make 50-100M in an evening of playing, just doing radar sites with a little frigate. As I haven't lived in Empire for ages, I don't know how compettitive/busy the scanning over there is now, back then there were some other people around, on some nights, I'd get lucky and get well over my quota, some evenings, I'd find only one or 2 radars.
For a total noob, I'd recommend going for an Imicus if you're doing radars. it's cheap, easily fitted, and can do high sec radars with no trouble at all.
Here's what I used: [Imicus, Cheap Explore]
[High] Core Probe Launcher I (Sisters Core Scanner Probe) Salvager I
[Mid] Codebreaker I Cold-Gas I Arcjet Thrusters
[Low] Pseudoelectron Containment Field I Small 'Accommodation' Vestment Reconstructer I
[Rigs] 2x Small Gravity Capacitor Upgrade I
[Drones] 3x Hobgoblin I
This fit requires almost nothing in SPs to use, and it's cheap. You can replace the meta stuff in lows for lower meta as well if you want. This fit will get you through any high sec radar site, though maybe not as fast as a cruiser or bigger, it works, and it's cheap, the only part of it that costs any 'serious' isk for a noobie is the sister probes. I do recommend getting those, they're totally worth it.
Here is the strategy on how to do these sites: - Scan it down, - Warp there - Approach a group of rats. As soon as they agro you, turn around, kick in the afterburner and release your drones on them. - Stay out of their range with the AB so they can't hit you until the drones have done their thing. - Hack the cans - Profit
If you haven't scanned the entire system yet, you can continu scanning from there, and just approach any wrecks, loot/salvage them while you're busy scanning for a little more money.
The main point about scanning is, it's a hit and miss thing. Some days you will get lucky, some days you won't. Just because a single system doesn't have anything, or even 2 or 3 doesn't mean it's not profitable. My usual rounds consisted of about 10-12 systems I scanned down and cleaned out. On some nights, this would get me almost nothing, on some nights, I had 2-3 radars in nearly every system.
You can also do combat sites, getting a bigger/better ship for them after you scanned them down. My personal feeling about this is that radars are slightly more 'consistent' as you can scan/do more of them on an evening than combats, but a combat can get you a big score. The question is.. Are you feeling Lucky?.... Punk.

holy **** man, are you trolling him or what
how is active tanking mostly used on smaller ships, what game are you playing, active shield tank is always used on large ships in PvE, passive shield tanking is all about regeneration and battleships have like the longest shield recharge time with 1 or 2 exeptions, it's good on everything up to a BC, it's not about how big your buffer is, it's about how fast it regenerates compared to it, that's so much misinformation saying that BS are passive shield tankers, seriously wtf
passive shield regeneration and capacitor regeneration work the same way, they're at peak around 33%
weather you passive or active tank small ships comes down to bonuses, capacitor and the slot layout, but more often than not passive shield tanks are far superior |

As Orlacc said, better probe sensor strength only helps you find an existing site faster, and get you a warp in to it faster. The strength of your probes has nothing to do with which sites will spawn.
A faster probe strength however will let you scan down and find more sites in the same period of time, giving you a better chance of finding something nice :) |

it also sounds like you're continuing to use the imicus for the explo sites you're finding. i'd recommend looking back through the posts and rechecking some of the other ships posted. specifically the destroyers.
for a while there while still a low skilled and unknowing pilot i found that a thrasher worked quite well at clearing rats quickly and still allowing for reasonable scanning. including a variety of areas in low sec where a simple thrasher is often times overlooked (but not always ;p ) by many pirates. just remember to clean out the hold every once in a while to avoid having too much in cargo if you are jumped. also, always scan from a 'safe' spot, either a bookmark made between several planets or a customs office from a distance that you then boogie away from at top speed while scanning.

For now yes, but I have plans to use some other ships after this testing period. Vexor is high on my list for my next explorer ship because I have pretty high drone skills allready. But I haven't rule out any other setups suggested on this thread either. But for radars and magnetometric sites on hi-sec Imicus has been enough.
But low-sec exploring + new ships are on my list next...and maybe first unkown sites on hi-sec space. But want to go this "a month testing period" first as planned with these setups. |

between proton and emp/phased plasma rounds it covers a wide degree of ranges, typically well outside what the rats will be able to hit you from. it's quite cheap, and losing it won't break the bank.
best of luck. I would fit 4x200mm Ac's, 2x250mm Arty, a NOS (the meta 4 if you can get one), plus the probe launcher in the highs then pull a tight orbit (500m) around the cruisers or other suitable target found in some sites. You can then use it as a battery to run the Armour Repper. Just make sure you run your cap at between 50 and 75% of capacity You can them kill all other targets then kill the cruiser(cap battery) last. With a catalyst you need 2 NOS (it's a really crap destroyer). Haven't tried it with a cormarant (but as it's hybrid fit it's likely to suffer in the same way). If you're up agaist Angels use Fusion Ammo (Exp weakness), and Guristas use Titanium Sabot (exploits their Kin weakness, although emp works nearly as well) If you find an Angel Lookout' forget the second room and mine the jaspet/hemophite instead - it's much more profitable... |

Long time ago I have written wiki page about high sec exploration:
http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/High_sec_exploration_(advanced)
it is not for begginers but once you get hang of it it should help you improve earnings. I do exploration since I started playing EVE, well 2 months later cause I had to learn skills (old scan system) . I easily earn 2-3 billion in a month depending on luck/time invested which is really good for high sec. You have to take into account that I know all tricks so that is why my earnings are good. I also invest billions into it. I tried to share most of my tricks of trade in that page in order to help people out. Hope it helps you too.

It would be a great asset to the exploration community hearing from a true new player with all of those limitations rather than an older player emulating it (not that that wouldn't be helpful, but having a truly new player do it would provide an extremely different perspective).
I don't know if I made a good favour for exploration community but my testing period is over and my end report can be read from here
Summary: What I learned?
I want to thank everyone who gave instructions and ideas on this thread and those also who gave constructive criticism about my fittings etc.
Shortly about my summary. I can now recommend exploration for newbies like me also. It is the best money source what I have find so far during my short playing career. With a little skills, relative cheap ships and fittings you can gather good income.

Good God, you found 128 Unknown and Ladar sigs laying around and didn't run them? Where in the world were you?
I will say that, in my experience, I've found Radars somewhat more common than the 5% that you have, so you might want to factor that into your calculations.
Overall though, nice writeup. I think it's a good idea for people to try as many different things as they can in Eve, good work. |

Well written and helpful for new explorers.
I don't know about other explorers but I would advise you to limit yourself to four probes in a diamond formation (I use 4 and set them up on the same plane having all arrow heads touching on the signature), then scale them using shift+click and move them closer in (or out) using alt+drag. |

This is not diamond formation but is it similar to this? Do you have picture/video about that formation. And how it is better than for example this pyramid method?
4 probes scanning - Pyramid
But I agree that I'll have to learn scanning using four probes. It might be a little faster that it is with five altough I got better allready with five compared my first runs about a month ago. |

I read your page and found it very helpful, but I cant help but wonder. Where and what are you spending billions on for exploration? |

Why would you advise so?
All probes count towards scan strength, so especially with low Rangefinding level it would be better to use as many probes as skills allow.
Also having the probes in a 3-dimensional formation is better than a single plane, both because signatures don't stick to a single plane and the very nature of quadrulation.
Launching additional probes and the initial arrangement is anyway not the biggest time sink imo, and time lost in that is gained back in the fewer scan cycles resulting from the extra probes. |
