TL;DR - Find some time to read it, I'm not summarizing this **** for your sake.
Okay, I've had it with people referring to pirates and scammers as "griefers" or saying that they're ***holes or ****heads or whatever, and now I'm gonna say something about it.
This is EVE. This is not WoW, this is not real life, this is not Hello Kitty Adventures. It is a game that is designed and run specifically to cater to people with a cutthroat instinct to do whatever it takes to profit, whether that profit is in the form of ISK, fame, or merely blowing up ships. That is the WHOLE POINT of EVE, period.
If you decided to play EVE for it's wonderful, supportive community and to make friends while doing PvE in the safety of your own carebear little corp, you picked the wrong game. Yes, there are friendly people here, and yes, people will support and help you, but be well aware that this game is BASED on PvP.
Calling a pirate or scammer in EVE a griefer is like saying the same about someone in Counter-Strike for killing you. That's the point. That's what the game is made for. If someone steals from your can, don't FREAKING shoot at them unless you can kill them, and if they kill you, oh-freaking-well, that's the way the game works. Being a little ***** about it is lame. If you can't handle it, quit! GTFO of my game and make room for someone that has some semblance of a backbone.
I've been playing EVE for years now, but even as a fresh NEWBIE, I never did any of the following:
- Looted from someone else's cargo can without knowing what I was getting into.
- Been killed in PvP and then proceeded to cry in local about my loss.
- Undocked in a ship I couldn't afford to lose.
- Been scammed.
- Petitioned ANYONE for scamming, stealing, or generally making others cry.
I'm not claiming to be awesome, or super smart. These things are COMMON FREAKING SENSE, something that is obviously as uncommon as the idiom claims it is. Who knows? Maybe it's because I played Ultima Online for the better part of a decade and got used to generally unrestricted PvP. Whatever it is, I've never viewed any of these actions as being "griefing".
You may call yourself a griefer. I do on occasion, too, but that term really doesn't belong in EVE. It's been carried over from other cuddly games like WoW and EverQuest.
Even the guys that prey off of the ignorance of newbies aren't griefers! I was a newbie once, and I never fell for the whole "Here's some free stuff. I promise I won't shoot." trick. Why? Because I'm not an idiot! Because I know I'm playing a PvP oriented game and that most other people play this game for the same reason I do: To get one up on other players! Because anyone with a lick of sense would reply with "Trade them to me at a station so I don't go aggressive."
And no, "not knowing how aggression works" isn't an excuse. Take five minutes to ask on the forums, or do a tutorial, or read a FAQ. Ignorance isn't an excuse. For anything. Ever.
Bottom line: Unless someone is hacking the game or exploiting a bug, they're not "griefing" you just because you were an idiot and fell for their trick/scam/bait/what-have-you. They set up a trap, and you fell for it. Suck it up, go buy a new ship, and most importantly, STFU.

If you grief newb players you're NOT "teaching them how to play Eve at an early age", you are a Fail Pvp'er and are giving grief. i.e. A Griefer. Simples.

i can see how it might seem ironic but its really not. Look above where it says "threads have meaning". My post(s) in this thread are fairly spamtastic- but they arent threads- they are posts. Oops, I apologize to you and to ALL of the EVE community for the lack of "meaning" my thread has. Perhaps I should have been more philosophical? Perhaps we should have discussed the meaning of life, or I should have brought up some vital issues facing the EVE community today.

Even if the very point of EVE online is to do whatever it takes to survive and make a profit using cutthroat methods (it isn't, nowhere have I ever read such a thing), it doesn't mean people can't point out to you that you're a **** for doing such things.
Essentially, you're whining about people telling other people that they're ****s when they blow up their ship "for the lulz". They are ****s. It's legal to blow up someone's ship for the lulz, sure it is, but you're still a **** for doing it.
Stop complaining because your ****yness is compelling people to let you know how much of a **** you are, you ****.

While I give carebears the right to grieve and whine over their space pixels, the tears from hulkageddon and the massive whines, cries and "Nerf insurance/pirates/gankers" threads make you wonder....
How did these people find EvE? I found it because of the articles about GHSC's heist and destruction of that one corp and the rare navy geddon or apoc or whichever ship it was.
That's what was appealing. It's a rough and tumble down and dirty game. It advertises itself as such in many ways.
Can't say I'm good at exposing the podgoo to the void of space but I do enjoy going out and trying.

well at the rate of decline of the human ability to communicate effectively i see no more than 2 generations more passing before humans manage to become solitary animals incapable of communicating on any meaningful level. bandwidth increases hugely and yet we limit ourselves to 140 characters?

Is it just me or is that last paragraph a TL:DR version?
As for myself (and my corp) we are *******s, we have fun, we have friends who we shoot and also call us *******s, but they prefer us being there to not being there cause it adds a bit of spice to their game. Some people do call us griefers or w/e, I'm not going to make some thread *****ing on the forums about it, tend to find them quite amusing myself.
On the topic of shooting noobs just undocking from the station for first time ever, that's lame & is real griefing, even we look down on people like that (no sport, no isk, no reason).

The game is different things to different people, may play the game to be industrial giants an make revolting amounts of money.
Others play to have a name as the best scout in eve (for instance)

You know the difference between this feral angst driven teen time an what Goon did in Jihad ?.... Class. Goons may have killed everyone an their dog who were mining but you could still play the game you paid to play. Because there were places GF stayed out of.
In all the time I was mining (2 years) I never saw a goon in +0.8 Hell half the time they didn't leave Genesis. But you lads are too feral to moderate yourselves an you live for harassing anyone no matter where they are. Hence the title of Griefer's.
I don't give a **** if you hunt hulks till the day they shut down servers, but a grown adult will use some self moderation an realize this is a "Computer game" that people use to relax an have fun in. They also pay hard cash to do so....
You have a system tailor made to allow you to grief an kill anyone anywhere anytime with no consequence to you whatsoever,.So use a modi****of maturity an realize some ppl want to play the game their way without you camping the station an killing them over an over an over all night so they end up with nothing. It isn't cool nor tough.
