Looks like our friends in EvE who lice in Australia are at risk of having their Internet censored by the government with a MANDATORY INTERNET FILTER.
Watch this video blog by Dave Jones for more details. VIDEO
I am from American so why? you ask do I care about this. Well because it only takes one democratic government to slip this in before they all want to follow suit. Australian Players of EvE do something about this. As stated by Dave Jones there are games added to the list of stuff that will be blocked if this thing goes through.
Here looking out for you EvE playing Australians.

Edited by: karma militia on 11/01/2010 16:14:20 Edited by: karma militia on 11/01/2010 16:13:01 Yep, unfortunately its looking like this is going through.
The majority of our population are 50-60ish and jaded hippies, who are now apathetic to the issues of free speech, all they want is a nanny state to give them some security in this big bad world, regardless of the cost.
Anyway, the fact that this filter can be bypassed by very basic proxy defeats its advertised purpose.
Its real purpose is to block content which could be defined as 'terrorist propaganda', which incorperates everything which does not whole-heartedly support the establishment.
Its actual effect will amount to little more than keeping the ignorant ignorant, and slowing down everyones connections severely.
It's a ****ing stupid move, setting the country on a self-destructive course. Hopefully whatever deal was made with china to encourage the implementation of this filter was worth the cost.
I never thought my country was stupid enough to put up with such blatant government domination, but it seems i was wrong, and it sets a dangerous precedent.

I'm curious...
What supposed "problems" has the Australian government identified that they feel requires this level of intervention? What evidence do they have that this will "fix" the problem they perceive? I honestly do not expect the reasons given to hold any water but curious what crawled up their butt to go here in the first place.

well the problem is stuff like kiddy ****, al qaeda training sites, 4chan etc.
Quote: What evidence do they have that this will "fix" the problem
well their arguement is something along the lines of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qh2sWSVRrmo
But they have no logical argument or reason to beleive that such a filter will be even moderately successful at serving its advertised purposes. That, combined with extreme opposition, is why i strongly suspect china bullying/bribing kevin rudd into the idea, so that they can relieve themselves of international criticism. (Rudd speaks chinese btw)

The internet is a major pain in the butt for all who are in political power. It makes keeping the masses in the dark difficult and limits the control over what is said and written. I fully expect much slowboating around in every democratic country until they find some excuse to limit the free access to the internet. And as far as I see it, this is happening not only Down Under, but in many democratic countries, very slow, very subtil, very clandestine.

I cant agree with you there sorry. Internet provides, in its purest form, access to truth. Access to truth is not a privilege, but a right that every free man on this earth should be able to enjoy. And it is my principle to preserve this freedom. Take away this freedom and one is enslaved by Paranoia.
Those who desire to give up freedom in order to gain security will not have, nor do they deserve, either one. --Thomas Jefferson.

Democracy is responding with stuff like the pirate party, not sure where it started but there's a pirate party in a few countries now so worth checking if there's one where you are.
Unfortunatly I have a horrible feeling that Huxley was right.

Yeah, I imagine that it would be hard to argue against the fact that a combination of the two would be the most effective method of control.

While I'd agree with you to some extent the Orwell model needs the Huxley model to become reality.
The Orwell model relies entirely on an 'us and them' way of thinking where there is a controlling group who can spy on a controlled group. The pigs moving from egalitarian to selfish overlords in animal farm is a truthful metaphor but there's a little more to it than that.
IRL our governments are controlled by us, not the other way round. Voting is important but only a small part of democracy, the choices you make every day by buying food, filling the car with petrol, choosing to go to the pool hall instead of the pub or whatever have way more influence on the way your country is run than any vote ever will.
The clincher is your mortgage, insurance, savings or overdraft, which if you consider money to be the result of your own hard work are likely to be the biggest financial contribution you will ever make to society.
When was the last time you checked on the companies that your insurance company invested in? Are you funding arms dealers in the congo, islamic terrorists or PETA? None of the above are things which most people would wish to fund yet folk of all political persuasions argue and campaign for stuff then wander down to the bank and invest their life savings without a second thought.
I'd love to know what percentage of people who marched against the Iraq war bank with companies who invest in arms, quite a lot i'd guess. This is a perfect example of what Huxley was on about, the information about who your bank's investing in is available to you courtesy of the internet but ironically the internet provides so many great distractions like eve that people don't bother.
The government might want to control you in a 1984 manner but they themselves are slaves to the corporations who are themselves slaves to the market and the market is us.
Orwell was a wet dream for fascists and a dire prediction of what can be, Huxley was a wake up call for everyone who thinks before opening their wallet. I'm not saying that Orwell's world isn't possible so much as saying that we're not there yet, but if we fall in to Huxleys' nightmare then Orwells' world will become all too real.
Even with a lifetime of study no one will understand the consequences of their own actions.
Protect the internet, if there is one thing i'd fight for it's the ability for my children to grow up in a world where they can think for themselves and have the resources to do so.
PS did I mention something about the pirate party or was the whole thing a distraction? _________________________________________________ Lifeboat ----> + Human |

Nice post Yani, although i might argue that the government/corperation/citizen relationship has a more complicated, yet still relatively cyclical, dynamic.
basically 3 loops of power existing similtaniously
corporation<->government government<->citizen citizen<->corporation
As for the amount of influence one has on another, i don't think it's linear.
Though experiment* (Thinking aloud)...
*To avoid over-complication this assumes the necessity of corporations and governments, and looks at the world as 1 government, and corporations as 1 corp.
If we have a total of 120points of absolute power and divide it into the relationships between the 3...
Government->Corporation Ideal=20 Current=5 Government->Citizen Ideal=20 Current=40
Corporation->Citizen Ideal=20 Current=20 Corporation->Government Ideal=20 Current=40
Citizen->Government Ideal=20 Current=5 Citizen->Corporation Ideal=20 Current=15
Tally of "current":
Government= +45, -45 = 0 Corporation= +60, -20 = 40 Citizen= +20, -60 = -40
Further qualifier: Since the corporation and government cannot exist without the citizen, he/she always has a wildcard which can wipe the deck if they feel their power is getting too low.
Oh yeah... internet filter... if you would like to send your thoughts to Steven Conroy the best place to do it from is http://www.getup.org.au/
