One thought i have is possibly making a semi-translucent layer on which the paint resides would be like wrapping the ship in the said paint 'plastic wrap.' which you could disable in a combat area or dilute the resolution in high population high sec to make up for said cpu needs.Although that would be another item that would need rendering, diluting it or disabling it are certainly alternatives if it becomes too much of a burden.
The difference is in other MMO:s all the different faces and hairs are stored on your computer. Paint jobs would not be stored on your computer, just like the avatar pictures in EVE. This is why you have to click on the avatar picture in EVE to download them to your computer to view them.
The guy mentions presets, so the full picture of the ship and all graphics wouldnt be downloaded (preset, duh, PRE-SET).. Right now all ship pictures are stored on your hard drive (even if you dont wish to accept it).. or perhaps you could say they are generated from data on your hard drive, mute point. CCP could easily add 1 extra variable to send that is a colorcode, and 1 extra variable that is sent to indicate a preset layout that the color will apply to, That is, 2 variables per ship (that's not a lot is it).. I dont quite support the idea for now, as there's other problems in the game that needs more work, I do think that this could be introduced however in the way the OP suggest without causing ANY load changes on the server or players "experience". Next time your in a fleet Battle say Hi on local, and know that you just sent about double the data that would be required for color/design preset choices. ----------- Never Forget |

Have a look there to see why we are unlikely to see customer ship color's. Its under player made ship skins.
read the first 6 ot 7 posts, no one mentions presets, and presets are easy because the look of YOUR ship YOU ARE flying AT THIS MOMENT, has a preset paint scheme on it.
He is right its like the Gone berserk Black amarr ships, Bloodraider skins navy skinns T2 manufacturer skins. It would have almost 0 effect on the performance. If they did have lets say 20 skins to choose from. because they alredy have almost as much in game.
Remember the client just gets points from the server and picks according to instructions the skin for the model. So IF you could only pick from pre-made skinns supplied and integrated in the client there would be no increase of the server load.
IF you were able to pick any even small change like a logo it would go nuts. All the logos of all the corps would either have to be sent each time you meet on grid or distributed on all HDDs with the client.
But the first alternative is perfectly doable and the argument for visual recognition is a bit moot since overview idetifies ship type and 99% of time all of them are red crosees or brackets.
