When I load different ammo into pos guns and show info on the gun it's stats for range etc don't change like they do when I load it into a ship gun and then show info on it.
Is this just a problem of the way I am checking the info? or does it not matter what ammo I put into a pos gun so long as *something" is there?
I'd appreciate any info you can help with this - or a link to an article so i can read up myself on how best to select ammo for pos guns.
TIA.

Recent testing seems to indicate that POS gun range is NOT affected by ammo, but damage is.
Generally you want the hardest hitting short-range ammo you can get, faction if you can afford it, and preferably doing as many damage types as possible.
For projectiles: EMP + Phased Plasma does all 4 damage types. Optionally some Titanium Sabot and Fusion to increase explosive and kinetic, if you have a lot of guns.

You will want shortest range highest damage ammo you can get your claws on. Preferably faction. EMP+Fusion, antimatter or multifrequency.
I have not tested this myself, but POS gun range and tracking is claculated from the tower, not from the gun.

Many thanks for this feedback - you've cleared up not only the question I asked, but also I had assumed the range was calculated from the position of the gun - if it is indeed calculated from the tower then my plan to distribute mods at strategic locations around the tower will not be necessary as, despite the guns being anchored many tens of kilometres apart, they are effectively all in the same place regardless.
All my calculations of arcs of fire are now out the window, but nevertheless this is good stuff! thank you!

Just put some distance between your guns so they are not a good target for smartbombs or bombers.

Most interesting ... assuming gun ranges are measured from the control tower, then a Small Blaster battery anchored at a large POS may barely reach outside the shields ... optimal and falloff are 10 & 17 km ...
Or, did I misunderstand something? ------- Nothing especially witty to say at this time. |

I have heard that tracking stats are applied from the tower, but don't know if it's true. I know for a fact though that range is calculated from the gun placement.
I spent some time sniping tower guns with a cruise raven the other week, and it was quite clear that all range stats (optimal, falloff and activation) were calculated from the gun placement.

I've hit targets over 2000 km away when manually targeting POS guns, for good damage. That's not in the brochure, but it is very useful to know.

Well, my tests gave me different results. Plus, I petitioned it and the GM stated that my observation are a) correct and the behavior is b) intended. I tested against controlled projectile guns though, what did you do?
