BOOOOO!
/rage
the straight medium settings allowed all the cool graphics and no lag on ati cards, especially older ones. Are you saying now that i have to play with shaders on low now to avoid graphics lag?

Some of us would love to buy a new rig, but it's not always tops on the priority list.

This,
Will mine for station office rent, i mean will work for new gaming rig. But yeah being out of a job in school really sucks, kinda hard to build a new rig, though all i need is video card and more ram.

Why not just spent 40 bucks on a newer video card? On the other hand everyone has there own opinion and you can feel free to disagree with my sig.

I don't think you read the previous comments, 10, 20 or 30 bucks it isn't on their top list of things to buy or bills to pay. $40 bucks is barely going to get you anywhere anyway, especially if its an old rig, which will also need upgrades all round not just GPU wise.

A 4670 runs about $65, and can run eve decently on high shader. Gaming is a cheap hobby.

You just need to shop for the deals.
I recently upgraded to a Radeon HD 4850 1GB, only cost my $50, since I got it while it was on sale.
Building a new rig can actually be very cheap. This rig I'm using now, cost me $450 US four years ago, and I put maybe $200 into it, with small upgrades to memory and graphics. I can run Eve easily with all settings on full, and it handles Crysis really well on high settings.

I medium that great a step up from low?
I've only ever used low, the scenery never was a big part of the gameplay experience for me.

It's a whole different world. Once you go medium, you can't go back... at least until medium disappears. >_>

Most people people I find running into trouble like this have laptops, and it's not a "$40" videocard upgrade for them.

This change is dumb, is there even a reason for it, or is it just one of those "how about we change something that's fine, for absolutely no reason?!" decisions?
Low looks terrible and high drops FPS considerably. Gimme medium back.
Cue people telling me to upgrade my GPU. I can't, I have a Mac Mini... you can't change the GPU.

This is just a continuation of what theyve been doing. They dropped the second client type, now theyre dropping med shaders. Cut what effects the lowest amount of ppl and results in the best time savings overall. It is a business- they have to do what they have to do.
As for everyone effected. Blunt version- sucks to be you. Laptops generally suck for gaming, cant be easily upgraded, and cost considerable more then a comparable desktop. Desktops lately are dirt cheap. If you know the tiniest thing about them you can put your own system together for 300$ easily.
If your using an older desktop and are effected by this- well its not like it was going to last forever. Might be time to upgrade or replace. In many cases a 25-50$ card will solve your problems. If you cant come up with that- im not sure a game that charges a monthly fee was the greatest idea but eh, to each their own.

No. If they were continuing what they've been doing then they would either remove low shaders, or both low and medium. But they're not, they're only removing medium, so no.

Where's the benefit in that anyway? Do they really have three sets of graphics in the game? If the low remains, why remove medium? |

Low is probably around just for the purpose of squeezing every fps you can in pvp
Seems pretty stupid to be honest. The benefit of high vs med never did seem to outweigh the hit in fps to me...

One would postulate this change was introduced to force the player to make a choice. EVE sells it self on the players ability to make choices.
Dare to be bold pilot. Choose the your own shader quality to greatness.

Wouldn't removing an option be counter productive to the idea of "choice"?

Hardly, now you're forced to choose between extremes. EVE is pretty harsh and unforgiving.

Writing 3 levels of shaders is time consuming, especially if the different levels use a different dx path.
The majority of users can be broken down into 2 groups, those who care about graphics and have a machine capable of running the game as it should be run, or those that view eve as a interactive spreadsheet who don't really care about graphics.
Pandering to the "medium" crowd that is in a minority is a poor allocation of resources.
Conversely they may have in essence just removed the low option, as in redone or sc****d the low end shaders to be more like the medium, thus leaving no place for a medium option. But medium is still there just renamed and "low" is gone. Or even improved the "high" shaders to be more efficient and run better on lower end machines. Which it is I'm not sure, but I am sure there was a good reason to remove the medium option

And that's really the problem here: it came out of nowhere, with no explanation or reasoning or asking what people would prefer or how they actually use the settings. We don't know the difference between the three and what this change does.
Personally, I used to switch between all three depending on what I was doing, but with this and the slowdown the new planets caused, it looks like it'll be all-low, all the time.

I think if ccp keeps upping the game requirements their player base will get smaller and smaller.... But maybe that's what they want. Less lag on the severs in 0.0 then . I too would love a new rig. Here every tax has gone up. gerr even eve has sales tax on it now 7% per account per payment. So like others my money has to go to the increasing cost of living.
