OK recently I had a fight, I was in a Curse and I was up against a Brutix. Sure win? No.
I was at 20km and I hit "keep at range (current)" and my ship started to approach him to within like 15km... So I hit "orbit at 20km" and I went flying out to like 35km. Then he warped off.
How the hell are you meant to speed tank??? It just isnt working for me

He was obviously moving away from you at the same time.

You never orbit perfectly in the 20km you suggested. You always end up in a wider orbit then set up. So suggestions are around 15-17km orbit.
And like stated he probably, mwd's toward you and then changed directions to break orbit.
What I don't understand is how come you didn't cap him out nearly instantly?

WTF are you doing in a curse if you don't know how to speed tank? I don't care if you've got a billion SP you clearly lack player skills so get yourself a stack of crusaders and learn how it's done.

No your honour my defence is that the pixies did it in the middle of the night. Prove me wrong. |

You don't understand what speed tanking mean. Speed tanking is the art of moving around your target so it can't hit you with it's guns (unable to track you). Keep at range don't allow you to speed tank, just make your ship keep distance. Don't forget that your ship has inertia, if you slow down or accelerate, it takes time. To speed tank you need to keep your ship moving near top speed, and it's better done with ab because mwd can't be sustained long. Now, the issue is you need guns/missiles capable of hitting targets when you move fast around them...

If you ever run into a target that is using missiles on you, it wouldn't matter if you're flying a Crusader because those catch up real fast. But of course, the one thing worse than a missile is a Warrior II drone. Those suckers will came at you so fast, they can even outrun a missile. The downside with them is their low level of damage.

Dont get me wrong, I know the theory behind flying a nano ship. Use superior speed to orbit well outside the range of your enemies guns, and to outrun enemies drones most of the time.
It just doesnt work in practice for me though. My ship is just so unresponsive and/or stupid most of the time. It takes about 5 seconds to realise it's meant to be changing direction or it decides "keep at range 20km" means "ram the target".
The fight between me and the Brutix was off Jita 4-4, would that have affected anything? Apart from the fact that trying to fight off a station in a Curse is pretty dumb anyhow (it's the only ship I am skilled for ).
By the way here's my Curse fit, perhaps I'm just fitting it wrong [Curse, nanoCurse] Power Diagnostic System II Power Diagnostic System II Nanofiber Internal Structure II Nanofiber Internal Structure II

First off, what does that have to do with speed tanking? A Brutix doesn't normally have anything but drones that reaches beyond its own nose so its a misuse of the term.

Using the automated manoeuvres are generally a poor choice in PvP as an enemy can easily collapse such an orbit. If you see him trying to pull/close range overheat your point to give yourself the full 28km to move around. Zoom out a bit, fly manually and try again.
Curse vs. Brutix should be pretty much over in 2 cycles of neuts .. after that he should be perma-dry with just two staggered regardless of injectors and such, you are not using a missile setup by any chance?

my understanding of the term "speed tanking" is that you orbit far under the range of your opponent's guns, close enough and fast enough that their turrets can't turn fast enough to track you. not outside their range like you said up thar.

next time you have a speed tanked ship orbit someone to see what your inertia settles your orbit at whenyou are at speed. find something that keeps you in scram range and use that, it's not all that difficult. |

Curse range tanks. Pulse mwd. Use keep at range at 19 - 20 to approach target, higher orbit /26 - 27/ for staying out of its range, but still in point range. Manual corrections needed are minimal vs 1 target. Numbers will be other for faction points and skirmish boosted curses ofc.
Vs more than 1 target you will have to use manual piloting... |

If you find a nano curse "unresponsive" them uhm... yeah. What you can do is add radial velocity to your overview, it's a very handy thing to have for kiters like that as it shows you the speed at which a target is approaching or moving away form you.
Apart from that it's pure tactical awareness and experience. |
