I'd pretty much say that the server just went boom. Before I went to get some snack, there were over 40k online, now 5k.
Edit: Nevermind, EVE Offline now lists the server as down.

EVE used to be one of the most solid games out there in terms of stability until this last year. Now it's pretty much unstable for a week or so after every patch. :(
