Somebody once suggested that Oracle had proper database software. Is that still true?
Maybe CCP should try it

Oracle would probably have problems of its own....
The major part of the problem is using a monolithic relational database in the first place. Telco's over the world have tried that for multi-user close-to-real-time environments many times, and found they just don't work.
What CCP should have done (hindsight of.c.) was to use a telco grade distributed directory server. They're generally fast as thieves, and with the proper data schema (and use of it) can be expanded linearly almost without limits (ie. add server number 11, get 10% more performance... add server 21 and 22, get 10% more performance). There's a little bit of overhead, but not much....

For explanation to all CCP problems just google "London Stock Exchange to abandon failed Windows platform". CCP must be getting hell of a kickback from MS for using Windows platform, in fact its soo good they are willing to let servers die every time >40K people go online just to keep the deal :)

Hi everyone.
I'm Valar, the senior virtual world database administrator for EVE Online.
I'd like apologize for the outage we earlier tonight. We had a hard crash in the SQL Server engine and our high availability system does not work in the case of this crash bug as the server does not fail over properly. This is the same issue as last Saturday and also the same issue as the Sunday the weekend before.
We are working with Microsoft on this problem. This issue is both at the highest priority level of their SQL Server and Windows product groups and it will be addressed as soon as they have a solution for us.
Note: To "fail over" is a technical term an operation on the type of SQL clustering we use, but that is called Failover clustering. (This is for those who think I'm confusing "fall over" and "fail over", I assure you that our server did not "fall over") ---- Senior Virtual World Database Administrator Operations department CCP Games
CCP are doing what they can to get the problem eliminted...meanwhile, we live in the real world, where unexpected things happen.
Most people learn to deal with it.

Yes, London stock Exchange was doing everything it could too, along with direct MS help. On the other end of the spectrum you got NYSE running solid (only problems they have is when some server drops off the network by hardware glitch).

I just wanted to compliment you on your never-ending effort to copypasta dev replies from early December BTW, do you get any goodies for quoting this in every other thread about a server crash? Could I get into this deal as well?
