I was reading an article in a magazine, that suggested that the uk would be the best place to be if you wanted to survive one of the many post apocalyptic scenarios set to befall us in the future, it set out three main points.
1. There is at least 20 miles of water between the British isles and the nearest neighbour, this prevents certain problems such as refugee migration, disease, and war, especially if regular air travel and shipping has been halted due to the disaster.
2. The land is relatively fertile so crop production could be quickly expanded to feed the population.
3. There are still many natural resources to produce heat and electricity and basic tools and materials.
Do you agree? ----------------------------------- New Eden Chronicles: Prime, Fanfest 2010 |

Unfortuantly if it was from nuclear war it wouldn't matter the southern part of the UK would be turned into a radioactive wasteland (Assuming they would go for military targets there are 4 large military bases in the south Salisbury plain, Portsmouth Naval base, Plymouth Naval base and RAF Brize Norton all would be primary targets). we are also surrounded by france to the south russia to the east and USA to the west any way the wind blows we get fallout.

Hmm interesting topic! But yea if it were a nuclear war scenario, I don't think that this island would have much left of it :)

If the **** hits the fan and there's an all-out nuclear war between two or more major powers, your best bet is probably a remote pacific island nobody cares about. Rotuma and Rarotonga come to mind. Enough natural resources to provide for a mid-sized survivalist group, sufficiently small populations to expel or subjugate prior to habitation. --------------------------- Only those who surrender are lost |

I would have voted for Australia. It's a huge continent, admittedly with vast non-cultivable land, but then again the whole continent has only about 22 million ppl on it.

1. Yeah, but when people get desperate they will swim across the channel if they have to. A smuggler with a small boat whould have no problem either, so unless you plan on killing every desperate person that tries it you will suffer from those problems. In a war it will help because then you are willing to kill enemies and have the means and determination to act on it.
2. I would be less certain about this. UK isn't self reliant in food production and if **** hits the fan globally, everyone will cover their own asses first. Things like fertilizers shouldn't be ignored either here.
Quote: According to Farmers Weekly, ôThe gas crisis is having a tremendous impact on the production and price of UK-manufactured ammonium nitrate.ö Because of ballooning gas prices, UK fertiliser prices reached their highest ever in 2005 and have continued rising. February 2006 prices for domestic ammonium nitrate were ú170-175/t, up from ú160/t in October which were already the UKÆs highest ever prices. At begin December 2005 gas prices, N fertiliser prices would significantly exceed ú200/t, double the ú100/t four years ago. By mid-January 2006, the high gas prices had caused ôunprecedented shutdownsö, with all ammonia plants in the UK except one shut down and manufacturers importing ammonia to control costs. Similarly, plants in France, Spain and Bulgaria and 50% of plants in the American Midwest were closed.
So even in best case scenarios there would be a tough fight to determine who gets the last resources that are vital in an effort to adjust to such conditions and UK like many others would be in trouble and certainly lacking heavily in many necessary produce/products.
3. Ok, but we are talking pretty apocalyptic disasters if it comes to the point where normal trading can't meet this need or there is no one to trade with anymore.
I think UK might be a decent place overall, but only some small remote regions might be really good, since individuals would have trouble getting there and large organisations wouldn't bother. I might still prefer to live with my fellow men and work to rebuild things even though it could be pretty hellish, instead of just hiding or trying to save my own ass.

The correct answer is of course Madagaskar.
In all likelyhood the pandemic or whatnot starts with a chav doing something or another so the UK would be toast.

Nope, in any true "EotW" scenario, the token military defence force would pack up and head for home, leaving Iceland undefended completely, and overrun by the amount of foreign refugees believing it to be a safe location.

Since the vast majority of 'end of the world' scenarious involve the earth being pretty damn nasty to outright unliveable to organic life on the surface for extended periods of time you need to look into an extensive cave system that has lots of fresh water and figure out how to get access to enough food to last decades or longer. Othewise pray you go quick and easy.
Also if any of the scenarios call for anything massive to fall into any of the worlds oceans then nowhere on the planet will be safe. In the last few decades there is increasing evidence of regular global floods stirred up by god knows what covering every inch of the earth ala the 2012 flick. Having a planet that is 75% covered by water with the all the worlds mountain ranges easily swallowed up by even the lesser deeps is not good when something 'rocks the boat' so to speak.

But how would the refugees get there? That a whole lot of freezing storm thrashed water to get across even in the summer months.

Hell no, if there was a disaster then New Zeland would be the last place you want to be because of them!
If the **** hit the fan then I dunno where would be the best place to go, but places like Alaska which are the obvious thoughts are probably the worst places to go as so many other people would have the same idea and go there. ------

Romantic but impractical. The only show you'd get is a rapid flash, and then poof - gone.
No sir, I'd want to survive the initial holocaust, if only to witness the complete debasement and regression of the remnants of humanity into a savage state. I want to see investment bankers devolve into incest cannibals. I want to go all Road Warrior and battle deadly soccer moms in their armoured minivans on the cratered highways of the future.
The only thing separating us from frightened, feral monkeys is running water on tap, fuel in the tank, and current in our wall sockets.
