Hi all, im just curious why is this game the only online game I know off that has to shut down everyday for 1 hour - i am aware from people its to reset servers and tere cache etc to make sure there running smoothly the rest of the 23 hours of the day.
2 questions?
1) if the server is running fine at hour 23 why shut it down?
2) do they also do updating of the code in this hour - like mini patching - are there alterations done during this period?
just wnat some clarity on this, I am aware this down time is early morning for US people - but its 9pm-10pm for us Australians.
its not unbarable downtime - only 1 hour - gives me time to read forums for information how how to play better :) im just curious on the 2 questions.
Thanks all to those who respond.

I played AC for 3 years. Only 1 down time per month in average. 3-6 hours. Plus the occassional hiccups. Why is it necessary to make a game go offline each and every day?

This is not the only game.... after playing Shadow Bane i have come to the realization that out of all the MMRPG's i have played (AC, AC2, DAOC, E&B, Shadowbane, and now Eve) that the original Asherons Call was the best MMRPG i have played for content/little downtime/few bugs and overall goodness.
compainies should be taking a look at the way AC 1 was managed.(NOT 2, for the love of god and all that is holy NOT AC2)
although the 1 hour downtime per day is annoying atleast the rest of the time the server is up it is quite stable. (all things considered). Shadowbane takes the cake for the most horrible network coding etc. downtime of an hour + per day along with unplayable lag for the majority of the time the server was up =/

They said the downtime is only for the first months.

XeQtR finds it amazing that scrapyard Jack could play a game for 6 years without getting bored.

The downtime is specifically for me.
I need to make lunch, prepare dinner and take the dog out for a walk.
THis is all nicely achieved during downtime at 1100-1200 GMT (+1 hour for BST)
Sorry, but im not going to relinquish my lunchtime hour...thus you're stuck with it.

I think somewhere in the developer blog it states about putting in random seeding for NPC trade restocking, which at present only occurs during server reset.
The quote was something like "one less excuse for server downtime", so AFAIK they are working towards a 24/7 game.

Scrapyard Jack is, and i think you will all agree with me here, utterly insane.
And yes the downtime is Maintanence... It is running on SQL you know (which still amazes me) well done CCP... ---------------- ~= Askari =~

I'd rather see an our of downtime a day than the EA version of lag and beyond and refuse to reset a server
Life isn't fair and neither is Eve. Get over it. |

yes, for a mmo game this new, eve is extremely stable. and i think the daily downtimes are a huge factor in keeping it stable.
edit: also, grammar i'm bad. it's late and drinking i've been.

Downtimes are fairly normal in this type of game. However every otherone I know doesn't Downtime at weekends ( which is both annoying and TBH a pretty daft thing to do ) and keep their downtimes as short as possible ( typically around 15 mins tops ).

It's probably to free all the stuck characters that the GM's can't be bothered getting round too, 2 hours waiting for a reply can tell I'm ticked off. CCP can you refund my 2 lost hours please after all you caused it :P

Hehe, downtime is unnecessary, just saving the Reykjavik power company a little electricity...
Reset server for 5 minutes if/when they have a lag issue would be fine, and if the only way to refresh some of the NPC game content is through a reboot, then that is just poor game design...

That would be the London Power Company, the servers are on icelandic IPs but co-hosted in London.

My theory is that the 1 hour downtime is actually our "Exercise Hour". In order to avoid the class action law suits from the myriad of gamers who will become overwieght from playing EVE 24 hours a day, CCP have cunningly included a 1 hour break to actually exercise our muscles.
Please note this break is intended for a brisk walk or a quick turn on the exercise bike; the fact that it is almost exactly the right amount to time to order, take delivery off, and consume, a large Domino's pizza is purely coincidental.
