Seems recently there has been a number of high skill point accounts haxed and then transfered to new accounts. CCP is not returning characters which have been haxed and transfered for some unknown reason.
Just like to advise my fello caod readers to stay clear of links and shifty **** sites, that 2min release could cost you years of hard work within eve. CCP has no mercy for the curious

That key fob idea is pretty good and I'd gladly pay a one time cost of under ú10 for peace of mind with account security. I just hope that if they implemented it they allowed a many to one relationship.

Confirming I approve of many-to-one relationships.
On seriouser note, there's no reason for the forum pass to be the same as the game pass (and most likely the new COSMOS pass whenever it shows up). It's one more column per row in the Account database...not a huge deal, and its not gonna cause noticable slowdown on queries.
No excuse, CCP.

I don't know about other players but my own experience. I recently lost an almost 70 mil SP toon and can't get it back. So this doesn't really surprise me a lot. And no I didn't purchase isk for RL money and I certainly haven't shared my login info with anyone. However such is the life of the internets. I try to put a positive spin on it and think of it as a fresh start.

Just in my corp, 4 account have been hacked during the last month. Hopefully, we were able to make the account be banned quick enough to prevent the character to be transfered. But most of the assets were lost, and CCP just refund the regular insurance payout for these... AFAIK, 2 more accounts as least have been hacked in other corp of my alliance.
Now, it is up to you to believe it or not, since posting chatlog with CCP staff or petition log is not allowed on these boards.

Yes it does happen more then players expect. Every situation is handled differently by the GM who is looking into the case. Some will reimburse the whole sha'bang, some will give you some bull sh*t generic response. If only we lived in a eve-world were these things can be avoided.

Another very easy thing you can do if you are affraid to get keylogged is use a virtual keyboard. Which is available (to my knowledge) in all recent windows versions.
Start > Programs > Accessories > Accessibility > On-Screen Keyboard
It is an on-screen keyboard, where you click the keyboard buttons with your mouse, thereby bypassing any possible active keyloggers.

I wonder if the people who can't get their hijacked accounts back aren't the original owners of said accounts? The process to get a hijacked account back is to produce the orignal cc, address and similar details which can be hard if the account originates from lost friends/ebay.

We recently had this happen to an account in my corp. An old account that had been passed to a trusted corp member when the original owner decided to stop playing. We've since lost contact with the original owner and now the account's locked down until we can get in touch or convince ccp that a year of someone else paying on the account probably indicates that they are the proper user these days.
We're not sure how the hacker got the account info, the current user is very careful, but it happens. Could have been brute force, could have been a particularly sneaky key logger, could have been a lot of things.

It's the same thing (almost) as locks used on ATM's and other such safes in banks. I would be down for that. It's over 9000 times safer than this, "Hey! Lets make their account log in information the same as what they use for the forums." crap. Funny how a game that if your account is hacked you can easily replace everything by grinding for a couple weeks has far superious security than EVE where if you get hacked, you lose up to 6 years worth of time in skills.
CCP, are you working on something to make our investment more secure?

There is no need of pointless gizmos "to protect your password". Simply make sure that your OS is using all the latest security patches (understand Windows) and your AV software and firewall are up to date and properly configured. I can recommend anyone to use the Comodo software - it free and includes AV and great firewall. Scan regularly your PC and of course you should not make the stupidity to open suspicious page or download malicious software (this is the hardest part for most of the people). Change regularly your account password to new unique one every few months as well and this password should be strong, respectively hard for cracking, if anybody is "sniffing your packets". If you are doing the above mentioned things and got IQ over 80, you should not experience issues cased by hackers and you will be sure that the security of your PC and EVE is high.
PS: Do not use Internet Explorer FFS!

Changing your password doesnt matter, much sure you should do it every 6 month for anything but this only protects your account from wandering eyes, if you have a keylog on your comp, changing your password wont do much,..
It is somewhat a pain if you play games in a public environment like an internet cafe, but yeah I think if you are unfortunate to have this happen to you in a fixed location (your home) CCP should be able to reverse the problem,..
Saying that they should make it so ALL transfers require you to validate via e-mail before the transfer occurs, I think I would be pretty ****ed if I lost any of my chars, it isnt so much because of the SP but because of the name and actual work put into that char and well people identifying you with that char,.. :)

Edited by: Cipreh on 01/02/2010 21:36:28 A good way to protect yourself from keyloggers, is to have all your passwords saved in a text file somewhere (not in "My Documents" and somewhere not in plain view), and then copy and paste them into the proper fields.
I would only recommend this if you're the only one who has access to your computer though, for obvious reasons.
Also, the more difficult your password the less likely you are to get hacked. I know there are plenty of people out there with stupidly simple passwords, or whole words, alphabetically consecutive letters, consecutive numbers, and repeating patterns which are all signs of a weak password.
Letters, numbers, spaces, and symbols, should all be used in your passwords, some programs and sites do not allow the use of symbols or spaces in passwords, but the majority do at this point.
Your account security is in your hands, and it's not anyones job but your own to make sure your computer is secure.

If this is really happening it is a poor show from CCP
Surely CCP can identify if a character transfer has been made using a Credit Card with different name to the account owner?
Maybe CCP can send an email notification for confirmation of a requested character transfer, a bit like a forum activation. After all its accounts being hacked and not private email accounts?! Is it?
Perhaps players that are concerned about this could petition CCP in advance saying "I will not be selling or moving my characters in the next 12 months, if it happens it is not me!" If we do want to sell or move a character we can put CCP on notice of our intent, I'm guessing people usually know they want to do this sometime before they do it.

Pretty much this, I think when a e-mail change / account request is made, it will require the account holder to CONFIRM via e-mail if he wants it changed, this will prevent changing e-mails too,..
WTB more security,..
