Edited by: Stront3h on 24/11/2004 19:03:48 Can someone please explain why it would appear, that in order to get a patch for a game that I pay for, I am forced to use third party software and bandwidth? (and no I'm not going to use BT, I fail to why i should have to)
Both the http links and auto-patching are d/l at stupid rates, totaly unacceptable. Scratch that, they all just ground to a complete halt.
I can't even see that you've mirrored any of the patches to reputable d/l sites and I'm not going to d/l from someones ftp that I've never heard of.
Do you think the likes of SOE et al would make their paying clients use something like this?
Is it really much to ask for, to come to the games website and be able to click a couple of links and get a reasonable d/l speed and get on and play the game?
(oh and fanbois don't bother with the flames about why I should use BT, after all you'll have missed my point completly) |

You could also have downloaded during the night. If you have a half decent connection you would have been much quicker downloading this yesterday than today. It would only have taken me about 2 hours and even though it was slower than what I'm used to it doesn't matter because I wouldn't have been able to connect until today.
And you didn't say why you wouldn't use BT you just said you didn't see a reason why you had to. __________ Capacitor research |

Simply don't use BT if you don't want too.
And pick a number, you are sadly not alone that want to download it...

I can explain but your presupposing anything I say is on the basis of being a "fanboi" so there is little use.
Run BT then play Exodus, or sit and watch bits fly at 3k/s while the rest of us play, end of discussion

Give me a good reason as to why I should use third party software and bandwidth to download a patch for a game that I pay for.
Other than 'but you'll get the patch now' there isnt one.
I fail to see why a service provider for a product can't allow for enough bandwith to d/l a patch from it's own servers or get them mirrored to reputable sites.
This is just like the farce experienced by people that bought the retail version of HL2, but could use it because steam fell over. |

So to sum it up then you had 25 hours to download and install the client before the servers came up. CCP knew there would be a lot of people downloading the client so they decided to speed things up by seeding it with bittorrent. You then in your infinite wisdom decide to not download the client until the server is up and refuse to use bittorrent to get it.
In a related news then I refuse to cook my own dinner because my mom should do it. Even though she lives in Iceland and I in Sweden I'm not gonna eat until she cooks something for me. __________ Capacitor research |

A good BT client can change ports... Try Bittornado if thats the real case And most companys will start to use BT as it saves them money on bandwith

I don't use BT anymore as I have choice, but a lot of people in the UK don't.
BT have this habit of getting funny with you when you dowload lots. There is a limit of 1gig per month on their broadband service. This might seem like a lot till you consider that this one patch is 10% of that use.

Because you are also paying to be a part of a game with over 50,000 users, which creates a realistic universe environment. If you want better download teatment than the rest of us, then perhaps you would be willing to pay a premium for that service. Alternatively, you could kill off 45,000 players, but that would make for a worse game.
If you are unwilling to pay for premium downloading, then you might try BT. BT took me less than 2.5 hours to download the entire Exodus version (not just the patch to Castor). Most of the download was going on in the background while I was playing Total War on the same computer.

BT is a joke. Pretty sad that companies use OTHER peoples bandwidth to distribute files within the 3 MMO's I play, but they'll learn. However, I think CCP in this case did it as a response to customer requests to be fair.
I work for a university and the uploading BT does is grounds for immediate throttling :)
Sure glad I got the file a couple days ago at 350kb/s+, was right on top of it \o/

You should be thankful for ppl willing to help one another by using BTą blizzard on the other hand thought it would be cool to write there own BT client and made it that it pretty much maximized the uploadą of course killing most ppls connections and you would never go past like 10k/s but be caped on your uploadą
Here in EVE they gave an alternative, true third party and didnĘt put any restrictions at allą I use bittornado or whatever its called and it was great I only waited like 15-20min at 100-120k/s I think I saw like at one point over 50 seedsą
I tried to d/l from the site but it was at best 20k/s and lower.
I donĘt understand why they didnĘt put up on other major sites the patch thoughą it would have been SOO much better for themą but in this case BT worked greatą were in many other cases it sucked so bad that ppl hated itą example blizzard in WOW

I donĘt understand why they didnĘt put up on other major sites the patch thoughą it would have been SOO much better for themą but in this case BT worked greatą were in many other cases it sucked so bad that ppl hated itą example blizzard in WOW
support Idea: QuickInfo an alternative to ShowInfo

bit torrent is a truly inginiouse piece of software unlike normal FTP/HTTP servers, the more people who use it, the FASTER it is! what could be better?

See that, Stron3h?
I'm downloading via BT at a very nice speed and people are uploading the file at the same as I am downloading it.
Minimum strain on the Eve servers and a reduction in server lag.
Handy eh?

Well call it whining, call me names but this doesnt work at all! Spending just so much time and getting time outs simply isnt fun, to find that im unable to start from scratch is worse since the server seems to try to pick up at the point of the last timeout. Last and but not final, its a fileformat that im unable to patch with since its not the regular one. Amicus: I dont want 'better' treatment than anyone else - only to be able to download the patch period.
Mirror with a normal patchable fileformat ASAP please!

Maybe lack of flexability - yes, But care to explain the forethought? If I couldn't be near my PC to download it was I supposed to put my life on hold?
Please, we'll stop this right here. No one actaully understands the point I'm driving at, so further discussion is pointless.
So CCP is supposed to put their lives on hold to cater to your needs? If your life is so important that you couldn't click a download link that day, then I'm sure you can wait another bloody day for the lag to simmer down. Sorry, your 15 $ a month doesn't make you special.

Yeah very nice Josh, see that?
No point in further replies, I know when mob rule is against me and admit defeat.

Is this one also through BT? I'm not very good in this I admit, but BT is very fast once you installed it, at first it is a bit slow because it finds more people from who it can download. After that it speeds up, a lot.
I ♥ my pink dreadnought of pwnage Mail [email protected] if you have any questions. |

Thank you Eris Discordia, that appear to be a normal file. I did download some torret thing yesterday, but it seems to have caused nothing but problems in my case. May this work better *holds thumbs*

Eris do me a favour and lock this before the rest of the troll patrol turns up and posts without bothering to read and think. |

You may pay the monthly subscription, but you didn't pay for the patch.
Other mmorpgs just release big expansions like this in retail format, making you spend $30 or so just so you can upgrade. Maybe if CCP started charging for the big expansions (Kali being the next one), they would have sufficient funding to set up seperate hosting servers.
Until that time, since your getting it for free, there's nothing really you can complain about. They have provided mirrors, and for those with slow/unreliable connections, you can use bittorrent. If you don't want to use bittorrent, that's fine, just wait until tommorow when the server load eases up a bit and you'll get better download rates.

Isn't your browser or ftp-client a third party software, aswell as a bittorrent-client? Or maybe you use the in-game browser to download the patch...? |

The patch and full client were made available for download when Tranquility was taken off-line for the Exodus deployment. More mirrors and other download options were added as the demand increased.
This thread has run its course, as have the other "Can't download/patch" threads.
