Edited by: Cpt Xen on 01/02/2010 10:39:07 I'm flying my first battleship (Apoc), and granted my gunnery skills aren't as high as they should be. But I'm just doing level 3 missions for easy salvage, I pretty much rip through everything while eating bbq.
But pesky little ships that get too close are really annoying me. Sometimes I just can't hit them at all, my hammerhead drones have to do the work.
I use "Focused Anode Medium Particle Stream I" x 5. They seem to be like Heavy Pulse Laser I's, but better (meta level 3). I realize these are not the right weapons for my ship (mediums), I'm still training skills. But they work really well usually, I can hit anything from 3k to 30k away from me (by swapping ammo). Lately I also run around with 2 salvagers and 1 tractor beam, if your wondering why I dont have 8 lasers fitted.
THE QUESTION.... Without changing weapons... What will help me the most with hitting pesky little targets?
  (1) Target Painter (2) Tracking Computer (3) Tracking Enhancer (4) Webifier

Any thoughts are appreciated.. I'm a pretty new pilot about 3.5 mill sp... thanks

Any of 1-4 will help but the Webifier will help most.

          (1) If you have a single target or a 10 second cycle time on your guns. Second best effect but since it's targeted it will only apply when it feels like it. Some NPCs are immune.
  (2) Third best for tracking, second best for range, local hence no cycle time woes(short of swapping scripts) and no immunities
  (3) Best for range, worst of the four for tracking, passive and local.
  (4) Great for stopping foes in the tracks hence the best boost for your tracking, but useless for range as the module itself will have a 10-15km range.
Light drones should always be part of the setup anyway, though if your only issue is targets within 3km, get a smartbomb, and learn to use it. Parrots, commence!

True, but since he's already bringing medium turrets they'll be even more efficient than light drones when shooting on webbed targets. However, for lvl4's you'll want to bring large turrets and light drones on a BS.
Edit: Even though your Apoc isn't meant to carry medium turrets this isn't the worst thing to do when doing lvl3's with a BS because of the better tracking of all the small stuff there; normally you take something BC-sized into a lvl3.

Keep in mind that range is an important factor when using e-war, and that different weapon systems will not be affected in the same way.

Gratz with your battleship, It is always nice to fly something new as a pilot. You have problems shooting small frigates. Battleships can only deal well with them at range or need to use light or medium drones in missions. Any off the above mentioned modules will also help you. Personally I would favor the target painter and try to shoot those frigates as soon as possible. I used to use that on my Maelstrom and it worked pretty well. The signature increase helps hitting and doing more damage. Downside is it has cycle time and you might have wait before you can put it on the new target. Once pesky little targets or what is left of them come close, use the drones and shoot at other ships.
Frigates don't nearly do as much damage as the bigger ships so don't have to be high priority but it is worthwhile to reduce their numbers quickly. You don't want to wait for your drones to kill them all then after you have cleared the field of other ships.
Watch your drones for damage and call them back if npc's start shooting them. Always make killing warp scrambling and webbing frigates a priority.
I'll give you the following tips:
  - Train drones so you can use 5 T2 light or medium drones - Train drone interfacing at least to lvl 4 so they hit harder - Train all relevant gun support skills and large energy turret to at least lvl 4, they are as important to damage as the gun skills themselves. - Train tanking and capacitor related skills to decent (lvl 4-5) levels. - Train battleship at least up to lvl 4 - Get a dedicated salvage ship
Only then start doing lvl 4 missions, you might be able to do (some) lvl 4 missions earlier on but they will take much longer and you stand a much higher risk of losing your ship. Getting into a battleship is easy, being effective in it takes quite a bit of skillpoints. |

Pretty much this. By the time you're doing L3s and L4s, you should be using your primary weapon system (guns/missiles) to deal with the big ships while letting loose light/medium drones to handle frigates, destroyers, and cruisers in that order. Drones are intended to be support for your big, clumsy battleship turrets.
Also, probably better to get a Harbinger if you're using medium turrets and running L3s.

Edited by: Ki Tarra on 01/02/2010 17:07:19 (1) Best effect if you are using drones or you are moving. Second best effect (see Webifier) if you are sitting still and using your guns. Can be annoying because you need to reactivate them for each target.
  (2) Convenient in that you turn them on and go to work. Can change bonus depending on situation: range, tracking or both.
  (3) Provides fixed bonus to range and tracking. Covenient like a Tracking Computer, but does not allow for focusing the bonus to fit a specific need.
  (4) Can slow targets considerable; however, this only helps tracking if you are not moving yourself. Is unlikely to have a net effect on drones. It might even decrease their effectiveness due to the change from chasing to orbiting. Same problem as Target Painter with the need to activate on each target, but with the further limitation that time is needed for the target to slow down.
  (5) Carry a set of light drones and switch deployment depending on the situation. Tip: you can place drones in to groups for easy deployment.
  (6) Fly a battlecruiser as it will recieve bonuses to medium turrets. Harbinger has a bonus to damage and an extra turret/high slot. Prohecy has a bonus to tanking, but not as much damage dealing capacity.

As several has pointed out, Light drones is your friend when it comes to killing NPC frigates.
