Being a good scout is all about relaying information precisely and fast. Your FC needs to constantly be able to visualize every area that you are going through simply by the means of your communication.
Get used to the scanner and using your probes. If you are hunting NPC'ers then it is vital for you to be able to quickly scan them down for your fleet and provide tackle and warpins. Using the scanner is not hard, but mastering it is hard as hell.
Did you jump in to a camp? Zoom out and quickly get a grasp of how powerful the camp is. Is it inferior to your own gang? Then announce to your FC that it is engageable so your gang can get into position as you list off the primary attributes of the hostile fleet. If the gang has mixed BCs and BS with a bit of tackler support then say that, give approximations instead of listing each ship seperately if there's 30-40+ ships for you to tally. This also makes it easier for the FC to get a grasp of how powerful it is. It's easier to work with "26 local, camp on jumpin. 6 mixed BCs, 8 mixed BS, 5 Inty tacklers with 2 dictors. Bubble is up, they are all at zero on the gate save for 2 Scorpions 100k off gate, no other ECM on the field - long range scanner is clear, looks like there's no backup in system based on local count" than a complete list of the ships. Of course, you should always list ships that stand out. ECM, T3, Command Ships, Faction ships etc. are all worth listing as they can make quite an impact on a fight (plus they're shiny). Are there more people in local? Is the scanner full with additional ships that could possibly reinforce the gang you are seeing? Make sure the FC has all the information he needs to be able to make a proper decision.
When hunting and scouting for a gang the things I list immediately when jumping into a system (assuming there is no camp):
A) Local count. B) Close range scanner (4-5AU - if you are at max scan range then remove the first digit and change the 1 to a 7, this gives you just under 5AU. If you want a more accurate reading then it's approximately ~750 000 000km) C) Long range scanner.
As you are listing off that information you should be actively scanning / probing for any hostiles that you may see on your scanner. You will often need to warp around to get in to a good position to do so.
Without a good scout your gang composition means nothing. It can pretty much make or break a gang.
Edit: I can't stress how important it is to be precise. Don't make your FC ask you for information, give him the information he wants. Say an Ishtar is sitting 40k off your ingate (the gate you came in from, with the gang arriving on the other side) - don't say "there's an Ishtar on the gate", say "there's an Ishtar 40k off our ingate". Is he at speed? Is he aligned out? If so, to where? Is it bait? What's local count? What's on long range scanner? There are so many variables that you need to relay and take into consideration. As you improve you can give suggestions to the FC based on the information you have available as well. ___________________
