I've been playing off and on for several years now and one thing that never changed was/is a general dislike of the Goon Alliance. I don't really follow in game politics, so I'd like to ask, what'd they do to earn the hate?

read the past few month's worth of CAOD threads and you'll see why.

Negative, though grats on being the first one to suggest it. Is it so hard to believe that a carebear has no idea what's going on in null sec? I never leave my yard, aka Empire, unless a mission asks me to. The only info I get about low sec is from ingame chat and the EVE site main page.
I understand what's happened according to several recent articles, but I still wonder, after seeing many posts bashing em, what'd they do?
It seems to me there is no reason.
*Edit* The only reason I can infer is that they are/were a huge alliance with/formerly had control of alot of systems?

My suggestion is to stick around high sec, you may well find out why people don't like the Goons soon enough when they regroup and come swarming through looking for targets.

Thumbnail version:
Goonswarm exists for the sole purpose of ruining the game for as many people as possible, in any way possible. This isn't their first time on the dance floor. They have done and attempted to do that to a fair number of MMO games. They relish in the idea of getting someone to emo-ragequit. That is their ultimate goal. As a result, some people have come to despise them universally. Others cheer them on, living vicariously through their exploits. Still others simply watch in amusement.

Well, most of those who play EVE are very much like vultures when we see someone dying. We arrive at the crimescene to gloat and feast upon the victims lootdrop. Or their systems/regions. And more who's dying means more gloating and more loot. Its natural. Its EVE.
Besides they have done the same to other alliances too, so I guess they get as deserved.

What maybe most characterized the goons was their absolute lack of class. You can be an a*hole as long you add a pint of humor and do creative things, what they never achieved. On the other side, it was a kind of humanitarian association providing a suitable framework for the left-over you get when scrapping the bottom of the barrel. I don't play so often anymore, but just to witness their demise by drowning in their own mediocrity is well worth the subs Iím paying

I would imagine a stated goal of ruining the game would put some people off.

There are many reasons.
For me it is they way that they **** all over anything they touch, and then get all nasty if you in any way tell them off. It like they are just little immature Americans who go where they are not wanted and throw a tantrum when you ask them to leave.

I have been playing eve for a while, done most things, including the 0.0 large alliance thing.
I flew with alongside goons, and soon disliked them after listening to them on TS and some of the questionable mechanics they employed, the bookmark bomb and grid/can manipulation amongst others.
We fought BoB, and having witnessed BoB shoot through PoS shields, disliked BoB too.
It seemed I was in a majority of 1... I hated both sides of the 'Great War'
Then I went to Fanfest, something I recommend to every eve player. There I met a couple of players in BoB, they were fine, ordinary guys. I also met a few Goonfleet members, and they were arrogant, elitist, loudmouthed idiots. Something they always accused BoB of being.
The good thing about the goons was a small part of the attitude, after all we are piloting internet spaceships and some of us do take it a little too seriously :)
I am a happy eve player today, seeing goonswarm disband, and the sheer amount of CAOD tears being put out by goons makes me even happier.

Everything everyone else said, only adding that members and hopefuls have to give RL money to a business that is unrelated to CCP in order to join.
After you pay your 10 bucks, bam, you're a goon! Membership to this group is very exclusive, as you can see.
You'd really think CCP would have rules against this type of thing. Oh, what's that? They do?

Please try not to pain us all with the "Ugly American" brush. When my son (or grandson) act like goons, they are disciplined immediately.
When playing internet spaceships, Mom and Dad obviously are not watching their little boys very closely. |

Do you recognise what the date is in these formats: 2010-02-01, 25/12/2009?
When you go to another country which uses the metric system, do you keep telling people that "metric is hard"?
When faced with the possibility that you might be wrong, do you resort to "I'm American!" as the trump card in any argument?
Don't worry, you're not the ugly american.

When I started playing this game because this is a serious business game I had to choose an entity to hate for the entirety of my time playing the game. I chose the Goons because, well that's how mental coin flips work.

To answer the question of the OP, all I can say is start interacting with them in game and on the forums. Only then will you "get it".

I use the Goons as a litmus test to judge other Eve players.
Most people who hate them are idiots.

I took a previous poster's advice and visited the COAD forums, and needless to say, I did need a raft. So I'm learning that they just tend to be dinks. I suppose that is reason to be generally disliked.

Only a Goon would be dumb enough to have a Geddon COST isk after insurance. Enjoy your trivial little Gankathon. Today I have seen a single Goon and mulitple "noobs" in NPC corps in several small trade hubs I deal in.
They must have a big "plan" to keep their ADD inflicted, cellar dwelling, neckbearded minions happy...till they figure out how to do anything of consequence right.
I really think they are sad, but they are just such...well.... Goons, I can't feel sorry for them.

Thargat might have some hate for the goons on a professional level, the player behind the char on the other hand doesn't. It's just a game (or more of a hobby) and I honestly don't really care enough. Breathing 0.0
