How well can POS's in high sec defend themselves in case of wardec?
I'm pretty new to pos combat, but when i've engaged poses we have just used long range battleships and grinded them down slowly while we're taking very little damage. POSes seem almost defenceless. Is this the case or has the POSes i've been killing been really crappily fitted?
Also, in case my corp get war decced, is it possible to un-anchor modules from it and haul them back to safety?
For a small scale lab pos, would it be best to get a small, medium or large tower? And is it best to aim for faction or for cheap stuff to keep down costs in case of defeat?

Hi
If you get wardec you will have 24h to remove labs even the whole pos which is recommended cos regardless of the size of your tower and modules on it tower can be killed as we all know, so decide 1st how many labs you need to anchor, check cpu/pg output of tower and there you go. Medium pos is what you probably need, also I advise you to choose any HS space but not caldari. If you like you can check this My POS it will help you to choose the right tower for you.

FYI - the link is to a site that sells POS (Point Of Sale) software, not a POS fitting guide.
Have a look at the various weapoons available for the POS - including jammers and the bonus some of them get - e.g. cruise missile battery will active at 350km. it has 2x velocity and 2.5x flight time bonus. That should get you a good range on the battery. Will it save the POS - that depends on what you setup and what the opposing fleet is fielding...

Ok depending on a lot of things you could make it take a very long time for anyone to kill your POS in highsec if you throw some hardeners onto it. <POS's with lots of those even in 0.0 drive cap pilots crazy as it can take a lot of time to kill>
You could throw some sml & med guns onto it & a heap of EW etc & unless the people that wardec you have a reasonably sized attack force it will drive them crazy to try to kill it.
You could also just pack it all up IF/when your wardec'ed also.
Personally I would suggest you talk to someone that knows a bit about POS's & have them help you configure one as it is very possible that a well setup POS in highsec really wouldn't need to be pulled down each & every time someone wardec's your corp/alliance.
Good luck

I've checked out this guide http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=817184, but putting up a faction tower is so much more expensive then a small non faction one.
Maybe it's better to just buy a small pos and a few labs, and just take them down in case of wardec? That way there's no risk of losing the stuff at least.
Why isn't caldari space good?

POSs are only defenseless if you dont give them defenses.
Small POSs with only labs are an easy target, don't do it.
Get a med or large, and arm it with serious defenses. Nobody will want to **** with it, even in war time. Get a POS gunner trained up too, so you can actually use the guns.

A Pos without a fleet to help defend it will never survive by itself if the enemy wants it bad enough. The best you can do is make it look like more work then it is worth to the corps that like to wardec small corps just to try and take out research Poses and steal the anchored equipment.

Just the tower itself with a bucketload of guns and support batteries and hardeners can give the enemy a really hard time. Things you'll need most:
Hardeners 2 on each for your 0% resists and 1 for your 25% resist, nearly doubles your POS's effective shield HP
ECM Caldari towers get a bonus to it so use them, say 3-4 of each type
Guns Use a mixture of guns so the enemy has to deal with multiple damage types. Also put in different types of ammo so the enemy can't exploit one spot where the guns can't reach or do enough damage. Don't use Large guns, they are against Capital ships only, use a mixture of medium and small guns. Use both long range guns and short range guns.
Support Energy Neutralizers, Stasis Webifiers and a few Warp Scrambling/Disruption batteries can cause all sorts of trouble for the enemy. Neutralizers in particular can be very nasty if the enemy bring an RR BS fleet. If you want to go faction, do it with Energy Neutralizers and Stasis Webifiers first, they go evil when faction.
5x the guns If you can only fit 10 medium guns, anchor 50. When they incapacitate one, online the next and the next and the next. Attacking fleet hate that. Having more guns and batteries than you can online also forces the enemy to guess what they will be facing.
Faction Faction versions of the batteries will increase their HP, their weapon/damage and reduce their onlining/anchoring times. They do get expensive, so it's your choice but as mentioned, Energy Neutralizers and Stasis Webs do very well with Faction.
Placement Put your defenses on the 6 points of a diamond shape. Imagine putting a diamond as big your POS shield at the center of your POS. The six points that stick out of the shield is where you want to put your batteries.
Starbase Defense Management Allows you or anyone that has it to manually control up to 5 POS guns. This means you can focus fire and insta-pop support ships or battleships. It requires Anchoring V but it is well worth it.
Friends If you have them, bring them.
Things not to do:
Fitting missile launcher batteries, they require CPU meaning they go offline when the POS is in reinforced. Unlike turret batteries, the bonuses don't only go to damage, reducing their DPS. Stick with turrets.
Leaving the labs and any assembly arrays in the POS. Make the POS as worthless as you can to the enemy. If possible leave only the starbase itself and the hardeners. Maybe a ship maintenance array for quick refits during combat, but nothing more.
Leaving the POS on its own. If you leave the POS on auto, the guns will constantly switch targets. Whenever possible, have people at the POS ready to support it in any way possible. Again, Starbase Defense Management can really help here.
Some less than useful modules are Sensor Dampeners as they are generally surpassed by ECM in every way. Why damp what you can jam? They do have very light fittings and may throw the enemy into thinking differently about the defenses, so it's your choice.
Small towers can't defend themselves. They just don't offer enough fitting or shield HP to be worth it. Only use a small tower when you need a corp hangar array in space that you'll use a lot (say for mining).
Remember, the primary reason to make your POS a deathstar is NOT to kill the enemy fleet. A big enough BS fleet with support will level even a Large Domination Control Tower with more defenses than most people have braincells.
The primary reason is to make the enemy fleet reconsider and encourage them to find an easier target. After all, it's all about profits (usually) so make your POS as costly as possible to take down without any reward to be had were it to be destroyed. ------------------------ Low-sec is like sailing along the coast of Somalia...
