25 replies and no one has said TRADEWARS 2002 yet?
EVE is a direct fraking copy of TRADEWARS 2002.
Heck, there's an interview back in 2002 before the game was released and they asked the lead developer what their inspiration was, and he says that they drew heavily from TRADEWARS 2002, added graphics and tossed in a bit of Elite to top it off.

My limited gaming experience would say Freelancer, since no one else has said it. I didn't play X3, but I've heard it's like Freelancer aswell, so X3 is probably closer to EvE than Sins of a Solar Empire, which is actually more of an RTS, isn't it?

Just out of interest guys. Every now and then there are rumours of a new version of Elite, and dare I say it, even an Elite on-line.
Yes, I know this is the gaming worlds version of the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, but I was just wondering if anything else has been whispered about it in the last couple of years

I wouldn't know, my anti-virus software is convinced that the installer is malware and will not let me install it.

www.egosoft.com
I myself have completed them all, however I agree that this game very much resembles "Elite" or the better sequal Frontier : Elite 2.
Its very much the same as eve as far as what you can do within the game. Work for military, be a pirate, haul stuff for cash or simply do things from "the bulletin board"
Thing is the Elite games had one feature which I actually crave from Eve, landing on planets. The gorgeous scenery that could be created in Eve coming into land...
nope I'm thinking of nexus ! the Jupiter incident ! thanks other guy on thread : D

Incidentally, has anyone here played a game called 'Spaceforce: Rogue Universe'? And if so, what's it like? ----- 'In Eve, as in real life, if you are bored it's your own fault.' |

The X series is pretty similar.
EVE was inspired by Elite. If you don't think they're similar because the combat mechanics are different, then you have a very shallow view of EVE. EVE is far more than a space combat game.
Sins of a Solar Empire is a great game, but not anything like EVE except for the space setting. Maybe there will be some similarities once planetary interaction is added.

Not really. It's more of a 4X game like Civilization, Master of Orion, except it happens to be realtime.
Just because a game involves strategy and is not turnbased doesn't mean it's an RTS, which is its own genre and is traditionally more about memorizing build orders and having good reflexes than actual strategy or tactics.

Seconding this, even harder. I found this game on a demo disc ages ago, and loved it ever since. Sure, it railroads you into story lines a good bit, but the combat is fun, and you can customize your ships and your tactics. I'd venture to say that if I'd never found this game, EVE wouldn't have been nearly as appealing when I ran across it.
