Hello,
According the evelopedia, you shold drop a cyno 5km away from a station.
This is because the capital ship can land anywhere around the cyno in a 5km radius.
So if you drop it closer to the station the cap ship may bounce off the station into space.
But this leaves the possibility of the capital ship landing a terrifying 10km from the station where it would take about 2 minutes to fly back to the station, leaving it vulnerable to bumping and attack during this time.
Any advice on how to avoid this?
Thanks

First thing to note A stations collision area does not equal it's docking radius.
A stations docking radius IE 0 meters distance, can be several kilometers away from it's model.
Caldari Stations are particularly guilty of this.
The step by step is 1) turn on your tactical overlay. 2) move the cyno ship so that the tactical overlay shows you are 5km+ away from the station model. 3) check you over view to make sure the station is still at 0. 4) Pop the cyno.

I've cynoed into stations and never been super-bumped by the station, but I may just be lucky.
Ultimately, it's a fleet ship. If you do not have support to protect it ... you shouldn't own one. If you are using it as a jump hauler ... bleh. If 10km scares you, my best advice is nanofit the carrier and light the cyno when the system is empty.

And if you wanne be REALLY careful, make sure you're also away from the undock of thew station, and in a position where it'll take people a while to get there to bump the carrier. On most stations, this means above or below the station. But the most important advice was given in the first reply. If both you and the carrier pilot are paying attention, nothing can go wrong. All stations have certain amount of docking perimeter around them. This is space around model of the station where you'd still be reading to be within 0m of station. As a capital ship pilot you want to be jumping your ship into this perimeter. Some stations have very generous amount of it while others have very short docking perimeter. To check how much of an undocking perimeter a station has, dock to it in a frigate then undock and see how far you can travel still reading at 0m from station on your overview. Once distance changes from 0m this means you have just left the docking perimeter. If your capital ship lands outside of it, then yes it will have to crawl towards station to dock up.
Another trick that capital ship pilots use picking a cyno spot is mounting a salvager on their ship that has activation range of 5km, then opening up tactical overlay and dragging mouse over the salvager when in space. This forms a ball of 5km radius around your ship. You can then travel around the station and use this ball to pick a spot such that it does not overlap with any spikes in station model that can bump your cap ship.
