Although this thread might seem controversial to CCP apologists I think we should discuss as gamers the strength and weakness of both these two MMOs. It is my hope that without flaming, without trolling, and without favour we can carry out an indepth autopsy on eve-online and the new STO.
Here are the main issues which I would like to raise:
1. CCP has promised to deliver us the customers "Walk-in-stations"...Several years ago and failed to deliver, STO developers have made a new game in a fraction of that time and it has not internet spaceships but also walk-in-stations.
2. STO is cheaper than Eve-Online
3. STO story-line is well known, Eve online story-line is weak.
It is my view that if Eve online continues with the same level of Incompetence, Apathy, Lack of creative thinking, and change the demeaning automated manner in which it treats its customers, I dont forsee Eve online recovering.

And years befor they promised walking in stations they told us we would have atmospheric flight and where is that??? they even had a trailer for it. and they said we could have 1000 v 1000 fights and we all know what happened there, this was even in an interview with one of the magazines.
But hey there ya go they promise the earth and give us a sprinkle of sand.

Misconceptions about sci3nce abound in the popular media, and they are quite popular in the professional media as well. Most systems of education and training in sci3nce begin by trying to give a general explanation of what sci3nce is and how it works. Those general explanations are often misleading, and nearly everyone gets exposed to them. Critical analysis of those explanations is rarely presented.
Having so much widely disseminated inaccurate information about something as important as sci3nce has many unfortunate consequences. Many students who might otherwise love sci3nce -- don't; Many teachers who might love sharing with their students the richness of how sci3nce actually works -- can't; Many political and business leaders who ought to base their decisions on understanding science and how it grows -- won't.
Accurate communication about science, in general, isn't easy, because science has so many different facets. Nobody really understands science and why it works so amazingly well -- but many people are trained to believe that they do understand it (or at least that somebody does), and that they should pass these beliefs along to their students.
Think about it: We don't even really understand how babies learn to walk, much less how they learn to talk and to solve problems. We are just beginning to really understand how anybody learns anything, communicates with anyone else about anything, or accomplishes any sort of accurate reasoning. Since the particular instances of learning, communicating, and reasoning that we call "science" are at least as complex as any other intelligent activity, it's no wonder we don't understand them yet, either.
In fact, very little scientific research on how science works has ever been done. That leaves plenty of room for over generalization, speculation, and outright nonsense. The obligatory general discussions of how science works, given at the beginning of introductory science courses, may seem to make sense -- but nothing as rich and varied as the real workings of science can be captured so simply.
In these pages I won't pretend to provide a correct account of the nature of science, or the best way to teach it; all I really intend to do is to invite attention to some extreme beliefs about science that are very common, but mostly wrong or misleading.
We will (if you stick around) examine one enormous myth, which I The Myth of Magical Science, and several other myths.
The Myth of Magical Science has three parts: Scientific knowledge is (1) a special, superior type of knowledge, made possible by (2) a special, superior kind of person, a "Scientist," who uses (3) a superior way of developing and evaluating knowledge, the "Scientific Method."
Other myths include the notions that scientists must be (or always are) Objective and Unbiased, and that scientific knowledge is True, Disprovable, Publicly Verifiable, and fundamentally Statistical. Other myths concern the various details of how "The Scientific Method" is supposed to work, details like the supposedly obligatory use of Operational Definitions.

I thought STO was rubbish... Get blown up, doesn't matter, lose a ship, doesn't matter.. You get everything back! Where is the challenge?? It has the same gaming experience as Scooby Doo on my 7 year old's DS. In my opinion it's very dull. CCP have been promising walking in stations for a few years, but they want it to be right, doesn't that stand for anything these days?? I've met some of the people at CCP and they don't want to roll out bull****, I respect that. You say STO's storyline is well known, you can make EVE what you want! Admittedly this does call for imagination...... If you are unable to see the winning qualities in EVE, why do you have an account??
If that's too much reading for you in one go, I shall summarise: STO=Fail. I play many games including EVE and I thought STO was cod****e.

STO not only has less than stellar graphics, it also uses this stupid, stupid comic style. Just because WoW is successful with that doesn't mean every other game has to adopt that ****.
StarTrek story-line might be well known, but I wonder how they'd explain the explosive increase in ship captains since STO

I guess the UI and parts of the content (i.e. missions, mining) might imply some degree of incompetence, yeah. But Incarna is pretty creative - if it lives up to its promises.

WTH? So far I found the customer support very helpful and friendly. Not particulary fast, but certainly not demeaning either. Maybe you should try out WoW: Even the account page will mock you when you hit the cancel button. Not to mention that I never encountered a helpful GM either.

Grass might seem greener, but I know that just the word Star Trek will bring too many noobs to the game that have never played mmo's before, just like what happened with WoW. This is reason enough for me to not want to play it.

1. Their WIS and fps sucks. period your bridge crew does your work for you. And if you read my other thread about incarna in december, you will see CCP is doing it methodically and not using game industry sources to make it but every other industry to make it more realistic than any other universe. STO graphics are best eve 2003.
2. you are full of crap on this one. EvE is free to DL and 15 / month. you have to buy STO for 50 and then pay 15 a month.
3 Of course everyone knows st. its been around for 44 years. But also the story that leads up to STO univers is pretty weak. Eve has nearly 100 chronicles that explain the entire universe.
EvE has been dying since 2003 because of bad servers and lag and yet our numbers still increase. As much as we complain we still love this game even though it does habe problems. and this is what seperates us from the rest of the mmo communities. We will not leave because of the problems we tough it out. Finally, post with ur main.

Ok I guess I am a terrible person... yes I bought STO. And I can be completely honest, STO has some going points and some bad points
1) Fights are more tactical in STO with position of ships key to winning.
2) The wis in STO is shockingly bad. Classic all flash no point.
3) STO has very little to do with ST universe. They have taken the names, but left the history. Throwing everyone in there to make it seem like the real thing, but it isnt.
But the biggest failure is in the community. There is none. I know it is a new game, but the feeling is you are on your own and don't need to be with anyone else. There is no advantage since you are all virtually on the same side and the pvp truely stinks.
Yes i bought the game, but will not be playing any more, back to eve I come.. and with a spring in my step that I picked the right one. Hug a Carebear, Kill a pirate, squish a Rat, and tickle a dev.

Does STO even work reliably yet?
I had a beta invite, spent a whole day downloading the client because it wouldn't come down any faster than 10Kbps, only to have to spend 5 hours patching.
Once I did get on, the server crashed and booted everybody. I was, to say the least, very underwhelmed.
So:
1) So what, it'll be craptastic. But, CCP is probably responsible for propping-up Iceland's economy right now so we'll get WIS anyway and people who are into that drivel can funnel their rl cash into CCP's machine.
2) It should be, it's still only beta quality at best.
3) Dunno' if that really matters to anyone outside of ST fans.
I won't argue that CCP does not have problems, the number of regression bugs we keep seeing reappear from patch to patch almost seem intentional. But this kind of thing happens when you don't perform real QA and expect your players to do the majority of the bug-testing for you about a week before scheduled release.
Who knows how long they can keep doing things this way, somehow their numbers keep going up and they are spending it on diversification which isn't stupid.
The accumulated filth of all their sex and murder will foam up about their waists and all the ho's and politicians will look up and shout 'Save us!' and I'll look down, and whisper 'no.' |

Two different games.
To be honest, CCP dodged a bullet with this one. If STO wasn't made by Cryptic, you would have seen more people leave. Cryptic has their own issues, as well as some questionable design decisions. If another company had made it, I'd think you would see more defections.
I'm guessing Incarna is CCP's realization that the full loot HTFU crowd is starting to peak in terms of population, even with selling multiple accounts like candy.

Having beta'd STO and now into my initial (and last) month of 'live' game...
I like the way STO shields operate.
Other than that, I'd put it this way:
It is a quick fix for peeps who need a spacebased gaming fix that doesn't require any investment of thought.
If Eve is Chess then STO is Snap, with only 2 cards, and the cards are different.

I've logged into STO and leveled up to Lt. Commander and I have to say, it's a nifty game but it lacks on so many levels compared to Eve. One major difference is there is no impact on the game universe by what you do, and there is no risk. Your ship blows up and it just respawns. It's more like WoW in space to me. I compare it to when I can't do much in eve, I sit in front of my tv and plug in a console game or play checkers. It's just not very challenging to me.
I really can't get into the Eve vs STO thing, because they are two totally different games. Semantics aside, one I take seriously, the other I don't.

1. I don't much care either way if CCP does WIS or not. I'm a demigod pod pilot and why would I want to soil myself walking shoulder to shoulder with the common filth of the EVE universe?
2. The boxed edition of EVE Online is $40. That includes a 60 day GTC and a few little extras. STO is $50 - $80 depending on the edition you buy and iirc, it only comes with a 30 day sub, and whatever fluff is included.
I downloaded EVE for nothing, spend $5 for the CD fee and buy a year sub for both my accounts when I need more time.
3. It may have been because I was playing in open beta, but STO seemed very shallow in terms of story and content. That may change over time and I hope it does as I feel the game overall has potential. But for the foreseeable future, I'm not giving it another look.
I've played EVE for the last two years, and the only way anyone is going to get me to stop playing is when the devs shut down the server for the last time.
EVE has it's problems, we all know that. But it seems to me that the majority enjoy this game for what it is and are willing in part to overlook most things.
EDIT: changed s****to filth, and I call second page sniper.
Surrender is still your slightly less painful option. |

You are ****ing crazy. STO is one of the most boring games I've ever played.
The combat system revolves around cookie cutter MMO bull****. The ground combat is very repetitive button mashing in addition to being simply the CO engine copy and pasted into another game.
The game is instanced to death, the pvp is trite and meaningless, I could go on and on and on... but I feel as though I'm feeding a troll, so I will stop now. My sig don't fracking work. |

Yes, the STO story-line is well know, but its not the one they are using, they are weak in their implimentation of it.
EVE's storyline is fantastic and is PLAYER DRIVEN - hence YOU are the story...no linear quest lines that end in nothing, you go and make the massive alliance and win real rewards with your name in the backstory for ever!
