any one that doesnt want to double their server costs.... use your brain, how much bandwidth do you think all these people dling the files are using. Adding another server with that kind of power would be a tad expensive.... can you figure the rest out ?
as for the lag well blame the people that decided not to download the patches during the 24 hour downtime..

Actually, it's not only on a different server cluster -- they tripled their allotted bandwidth at the hosting site. Too many people went "Eh? Whatever" in response to the day they had to download the patches ahead of time, however...

Yeah, blame the people for not bothering to download it when they had the chance, not CCP.

Indeed. Everybody who was at this site should have downloaded ASAP, since they well know that patch day = lag because of downloads... Besides, more people should have used the torrents, they were nothing but great, unless you're on a connection with like 20:1 DL:UL ratio.

well with eve being one of the bigger mmorpgs, that costs 15 /moth around i suggest you use YOUR brain and tell me how blizzard or arena.net manage it to provide their server sided game content without a monthly fee (diablo2, starcraft online erc / guild wars). they also must have a ton of hardware to host all the games. especially arena.net must have a very big bandwith usage due to constant game updates plus complete client download form their site.

Blizzard is NOT hosting the games, it just hosts a software, that gives you a lobby where you can find other players to play your games with. battle.net isn't much more than a chat server which saves your character. Once the game's created and the characters are loaded, most of the stuff happens actually on the PCs of the players... the only database actions taking place there are "save char" and "load char" and maybe "create 10 different ladders"...
maybe some Information during the game get's routed to the server to check for cheats etc. but in no way the games are comparable to EVE in a technical way (only one they recently released is comparable in a technical way...)

Sure Blizzards hosts the games in closed battle.net. how should anyone with a weak computer and a low bandwith internet connection host a game for more than 2 players. where do you have this information from? no matter let me assure you its BS. i will point you to the d2 Realm FAQ if you wish to avoid future ownage you should read it
http://www.battle.net/diablo2exp/faq/realms.shtml
What is a Diablo II Realm? A Realm is a cluster of computers all interconnected that is hosted by Blizzard Entertainment and maintained by the Battle.net Team. There are different types of computers, typically called servers, connected to each Diablo II Realm. When capacity is increased on a Realm, often additional game servers are added.
and still, IF it were the way you put it it, D2 is runnig for a while now and the accumulated data (patches inclueded) easily exceeds the amount of data that is needed for the patch.
Anyhow: Guildwars with arena.net does it. And they host the game, and it's free.
thx, owend totally, bye
