Heya,
What is a particularly efficient way of piloting more than one ship during battle?
E.g. several windows on a large screen? Several screens on one computer? several computers? shared or split keyboard/mouse? ...
Each way I can think of seems to have drawbacks that makes it almost unmanageable, I'd like to know any systems that people have found most practical?

All of the Above.
2 GFX cards, huge PSU, Chip and Ram. 4 24" monitors, 8 Clients
2nd Machine, 2 more monitors. Synergy Software for controlling the 2nd machine with the same keyboard and mouse, another 2 or three accounts.
Bigest pain is logging them back in during random CTDs since the last patch.

Depends how many clients you are wanting to run. 2 clients over 2 screens on one computer is perfectly manageable. Swapping input is too fiddly.
There's an option to identify each client by character name in the general settings, makes alt tabbing easier. ~ Soar Like a Penguin |

Edited by: Psycho Tripper on 14/02/2010 11:55:33 There's nothing wrong with using the same screen.
Using "http://www.eveonline.com/iNgameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1040956" you can easily swap between any number of clients.

Thanks!

I'd love to find a more convenient system for managing my alts, too. Even the typical "warp in tank, aggro room, warp in alt, release sentry drones, set drones to guard" operation takes an awful amount of keyboard/mouse interaction - and I really really hate the tiny menus that disappear if you don't move the mouse carefully enough.
Life's even worse on the Mac of course, since you have to actually click the EVE window to get it to accept clicks or keystrokes. If you have two or three EVE clients running, it's a constant battle against window focus. Click to get focus, then move the mouse to remind the Cider engine where your mouse pointer actually is, then you get to do whatever it is you wanted to do.
Keyboard shortcuts for drones do help to some extent, but to perform something like "Assist -> Mara Rinn" using the keyboard shortcut requires having "Mara Rinn" locked already. Pity the fool who chooses "Engage" instead of "Assist" in that scenario.
Are you folk running 4 or more clients doing basically the same thing on all clients, such as flying a fleet of Caracals or Hulks?

Or you could just try and not use alts. I find it very easy on a low end system.

This will prevent those embarrassing moment like shooting a WT with your alt and getting CONCORDED or flying your alt 25 jumps instead of your main ---------------------- They're angry there was damage done to their ship. |

I can struggle with one client, depending on my state of inebriation.
But yeah, 6 is a push on a good day.

2 computers. 2 accounts. 2 screens. 1 mouse. 1 keyboard. Both networked together. Screens sitting side by side(duh). Input Director running.
This will allow you to move the mouse across both computer screens, as if they were on the same computer. It's the best solution out there. One mouse, one keyboard that you can use on two computers. Or more computers if needed. If you use more then 3 computers, you'll need to have mouse acceleration turned on, as mousing across 3+ screens can get tiring.
Ohh, and use a G15 keyboard so you don't have to do as much button mashing. The difference is very small. 1/4 second saved here, 1/3rd of a second there. But with 2(Or more) accounts, you need to watch each other more then normal.
I also highly recommend useing audio alerts for shields/armor levels, as well as having all your char's in the same gang(Duh) as well as having each char on your watch list for each other.
The draw back of all this is multiple computers. Doesn't sound too bad, as most of us have multiple computers, but even for a Canuk like me, it gets damned hot in my computer room with multiple compupters running. Hell, I turn the AC off for about 3 months a year, and during the winter, the window is open almost all the time.
Plus theres the cost of the computers.. :) For me, what I upgrade on my main rig, gets hand-me-downed to my 2nd machine.

I PvP with 3 characters. 3 comps, 3 screens, and I use Synergy to connect them all.
Using Synergy is a must for speed in PvP. It also help with ease in PvE and everyhting else.

Running 2 clients on my single pc is fine, although my alt is really so, so low sp that he doesn't engage in any fleet combat at all.
Guess 2 clients per screen is max you can do to still efficiently govern all active accounts. Most cards will allow you to work on two screen at one time. In that case you can try running 4 clients.
