Cash
I think it has been clear for a while that we are slowly but surely being pushed towards a cashless global society, while at first it seems like they are being clever by monitoring and restricting what we use our money for, it also lacks the understanding that people will just resort to different mediums of exchange, at least when we use cash it is "their currency" we are using.
So what next? No doubt a bunch of new BS laws will be created that will allegedly make it illegal to use anything but "credits" (or whatever they will be called) as a medium of exchange, and no doubt the people will just roll over and take it (which is the most depressing thing about all this), only time will tell I suppose.

This.
Unless you're doing something illegal, who cares about cash. The only time I ever use it is for the rare purchase somewhere that doesn't accept credit cards.
And don't give me any of that privacy bull****. Anyone who thinks that banning the use of cash would have any privacy issues clearly has no understanding of the impossibility of tracking keeping track of every random person's transactions (not that the government/alien conspiracy/etc would actually care enough to bother). The only way you'd have anyone bother to look at the data is if you've already suspected of a crime. Unless you're a drug dealer or something, you have nothing to worry about. -----------

Well thinking about it for a bit made me realize that since they are not actually banning cash but legal cash transactions greater than 1500 euros it will have zero effect on illegal transactions as they are well.. illegal and below the official radar.

But the monitoring will also be part of the problem, since companies will have even more data on services and products you are spending your money on.

I always have to laugh at this one, this rule is fine if it works both ways, for example how the UK government are holding onto info relating to the death of Dr David Kelly and will only release the info in 70 years time, also their refusal of a public enquiry into the 7/7 train bombings.
Another thing people are ignoring is that no cash = all money being controlled by the banks, of which they will happily charge us for, it should always be a choice to be bank free or not.

Our current cash itself is worthless, it always has been, its just printed pieces of paper or metallic discs.
It is the value they represent that makes them important. Which as pointed out, the banks already have control as they control the value of said currency.

I care about cash when I get charged more to use credit. Or when I just want to put 20 in the tank but the gas station deems it necessary to put a $70.00 hold on your card until the next day or so. (yus, i know going inside will fix that, but that kinda defeats the point of having cards at the pump.)
Fortunately for me these situations and those where I *ahem* have things to hide never take me to the 1500$ range. > WHILE SIG<AWESOME DO LOOP there is no escape from my crappy sig. |

I always use my Debit card for everything from food, to travel to paying bills etc etc. I hate hate hate carrying cash. My man purse (wallet) is full of enough crap as it is without having to schlep around dirty old cash.
Bring on those phone / credit card things they had in Defying Gravity (may that show rest in peace, stupid TV execs). It was a phone, and a touch point type credit card thingy all in one! :)

I'd just like to correct you on this. The banks already have in place an automatic system to flag up fraudulent transactions based on patterning, at which point at least here in the UK (I'm sure other places as well) they will call you and ask if they are genuine transactions or not. It's not a huge leap to apply that patterning principle to many other types of "less legitimate" transactions that you might well want to keep hidden. 'Prior suspicion' is therefore not the only reason your naughty deeds might be revealed.
In a true cashless society, I can only imagine such things would go back to being done via a bartering system instead.

hm a global credits currency...
Besides the fact that the euro isn't doing great as an example of multi-national currency, its kind of odd that "cash" isn't worth anything since the gold standard was dropped a while ago. I can understand us moving towards an entirely digital currency as its cheaper, but surely physical currency is worth having or banks could just start changing numbers and create cash? Can't say I have knowledge of how strictly monitored the banking system is though. It should likely be a nationalised service because of how important it is.
Also, makes me laugh that a penny is (or at some point was) worth more for the copper than the supposed valued.

What bugs me about this statement is that many times when someone is spending money and worrying because it is illegal, they should not have to be in that state because what they are doing should not be illegal anyway.

Quoted for truth.
What people do not realise is that the more we are monitored and controlled, the more things they will try to make illegal.

Edited by: Nebulous on 17/02/2010 06:07:19 (slight de-railment here of my own thread sorry)
At the moment it is just greece who are facing this, even then it only effects transactions above 1500 euros, call it paranoid if you like but it is still the beginning of the end of cash and if nothing else that is a **** of our rights (or at least my rights here in the UK), the bill of rights and the magna carta were put in place to protect us from **** like this and it can never be overuled, the only way it can is if we are not the UK anymore, which is becoming a reality as we become more a part of europe.
This is not only a problem here, the people of the USA are having their constitutional rights ****d also, their military make an oath to protect their constitution but all they seem to be bothered about is fighting in the middle east, every time you here about someone being put in jail or fined for crimes not related to common law, are actually not crimes at all and just a blatant **** of our/your constitutional rights, if you don't want to believe me then just read up on it, simple as that really.

That's true with the way our western governments are today, but you have to consider what those governments may be like in the future as well and what they could do with you if all money is electronic. We don't know that they will always be free and democratic at the level they are today.
Or to put it like this, it's what a future government may consider "illegal" that is the issue. ----- 'In Eve, as in real life, if you are bored it's your own fault.' |

Sorry! the way I worded it was a bit poor, it does not say that you have a right to use paper money no, but what is happening in greece is not a natural "phasing out" of cash, they are making it "illegal", to enforce the law it will have to carry a punishment (a fine or at the worst prison maybe?), if this then spreads through to the UK and the USA in some form, then it is a violation of your constitutional rights, what crime would you be committing exactly?
The problem is that many things we believe to be crimes are infact not crimes at all, not only do these ****s of our rights go by unnoticed, they actually become welcomed by many, like how people love it when a so called "tax dodger" has his house taken away or gets thrown in jail, another one is the so called "benefit thief", oh and let us not forget the evil "non TV license payer", what a blight on society they are.

So form fiat money once based on gold but at least still having a material carrier, we move to 100% virtual money?
I cant see any problem with that, honestly. After all, Weimar had it so better if they did not have to even _print_ money.
