ok - I've been ganked and their on my kill list. how do I track them down!

First put him on your address book to see when he is online.
Then you need a locator agent. Some agents can locate a character for you if you have high enough standing to them. The higher lever the agent is the better he is locating someone. If an agent is a locator agent and how good he is at it is seen in agent info page.
If you don't have any locator agents of your own you can ask someone else to use his to help you out.
If the character is on a station it will tell you which one and if he is in space then it tells you the system he is in. If he is logged off then it still tells you the place he logged off in the same manner.

You can use eve-agents.com to find a locator agent.
Your next problem is getting your standings up to use that agent. The low level ones have a limited range.

One thing: You could also try looking at the gankers killboard to see if he regularly hangs around certain areas. This might make it easier to find him with a locator agent too, since you'd have an idea of where he might be so you'd know which agent to use if you only have access to lower level ones.

That is a pretty good idea. How do I look up his killboard?

You can try googling his character name, or go search for him on battleclinic

Battleclinic, EVE-kill, or look at his corp/alliance page, either find a link to their KB there, or google the name for a possible corp killboard.
