My understanding is that black on white was the higher contrast, preferred method.
a quick google
Did any of the posters ever read any studies that showed white on black was superior? I thought the science was settled quite some time ago in favor of black on white. |

Science is never settled. The same studies done now could conclude green on pink to have the best readability.
Also, Jeff Atwood is a fail programmer who only switched to C# after he couldn't find enough VB.NET (:twitch:) code samples.

Really? So, you're saying the earth might not be revolving around the sun afterall?
When you say that identical studies could somehow suddenly have different outcomes for what provides the best readability, are you taking into account evolution of eyes or something? The word "same" does actually mean something you know. -- .sig apathy ftw |

For initial readability high contrast black on white is fine, but when you're staring at text on a screen all day long, light text on a dark background results in less eyestrain.
Light on dark / dark on light for readability is personal preference: http://www.joedolson.com/articles/2006/08/on-the-readability-of-inverted-color-schemes/
However, there's no denying that staring at dark text on a light background, on a backlit screen, is no different from staring into a low intensity light bulb all day long, trying to catch the ants crawling across it.

Hell yeah! Minmatar still use it as their main display technology so it has to be awesome. |

I'm just going to skip right past the risible notion that ideas like a flat earth or heliocentrism were somehow the product of science and say that science is "never settled" to the extent that new information is always possible which may allow us to refine our understanding, not to the extent that tomorrow we'll suddenly discover that there is no gravity and all float off into space.
Quote: When people thought the earth was flat, they were wrong. When people thought the earth was spherical, they were wrong. But if you think that thinking the earth is spherical is just as wrong as thinking the earth is flat, then your view is wronger than both of them put together.
