Just tossing my 2 cents in, since I'm kind of on both sides of this fence. I'm a new player, with around 3m skill points, somewhat haphazardly about my skills.
On one side, I've just finished skilling up to a dominix, and am working up reputation with a level 3 agent, as well as cash to buy said dominix and start doing level 4 missions. I cant wait to actually have the money to try risky things, and know that I can afford a new ship if I need to.
On the other side, I enjoy exploring more than mission running, and I really wish I could make the same kind of money doing that as I do from missions, its somewhat unfortunate that the current system makes me run missions in order to afford exploration.
Now, the thing is, the economy has already had the level 4 missions for a long time. established people have been running these for years. The money is already there. its too late to be seriously nerfing level 4 missions. Make tweaks if you need to hurt the ability for really high skill point players to blitz through the mission faster than it was designed perhaps, but dont make it so that new players cant make money to catch up with the established players. And really dont make level 4 missions too hard for new players to move up to. The idea of limiting a set number of missions per day was one suggestion that sounded good in that way.
I would love to see more love for exploring in high sec, tho really, once I can afford to lose ships playing with wormholes, I'm good with that part, I hear you can make good isk in there if you are careful.
Mining is a different animal alltogther. for all the talk people make about afk missioning, it still has significantly more risk than mining, until you get well over the 'curve' of skills and fittings, you will have to warp out now and then, and you will lose ships to discos and other things. Both professions run the risk, however small (outside of special events) of suicide gankers, but that is not really a significant risk. It also scales a lot better. One person running 2 or 3 accounts can add maybe 25-30% to his mission running income. the same person can double or triple his mining income. A friend of mine mines. he watches movies, and tabs over every 10 minutes or so to move ore. Once an hour or so he runs his hauler alt out to take ore back in. every few days he has to play games with canflippers, but overall, he has a lot more 'afk' time on his hands than a mission runner would.
