My story is that I had absolutely no idea what I was doing when I started off in eve. I didn't realise how important skill training was and thus I spent my first month in eve flying around in first a slasher and then a rifter ratting in hisec belts wondering how on earth other people were flying battleships and other shiny stuff and how they could afford them. I didn't do any missions because, in my very first non-training mission, I got the level 1 break their will mission and got my noob ship killed by the very first npc (angel highjacker lol). That traumatised me enough to think that all missions were hard no matter what you flew. Then, after that first month I started doing missions again but for any agent who would speak to me, meaning that my standings with the various npc corps hardly rose at all.
It was only after I joined my first corp that I started realising what eve is all about.

If that is what you think Eve is about, then lol.
I think you misread my post. I mean that was when I started learning from corpies what pvp was, what tanking meant, skills, how losec and nullsec worked, how fitting a point is a good idea if you don't want to watch that target warp off, how to avoid a podding etc.
Before then I knew absolutely nothing.
Now, with 23 million SP and one and a half years into the game I know that I still know nothing, but the knowledge that I know nothing sometimes saves me from making too many avoidable mistakes.
The tip about how to avoid being podded was one of the best ones (when you're in deep structure and going down fast, select an overview planet etc and start spamming the warp button. much faster than selecting an object, right clicking and selecting warp to).
