Edited by: Azgur on 23/02/2010 10:55:04 High sec hauling should be treated as low sec due to the threat of suicide gankers. As such I'm interested in learning "how to do it right" and I'd prefer to learn it without getting blown up a few times :)
Here's what I've been thinking: Small stuff: covert ops Medium stuff: cloaky transporter Large stuff: orca
Freighter is currently out of my price range for now, and orca has multiple uses.
Now what I'd like to know, how do you fly them? What tactics do you use?
Here's what I've been thinking, please verify if this is correct or if there's a better way.
For covert ops and transport ship: Undocking: avoid high speed kickout stations; use insta-warp bookmarks to get away from the station. To the gate: warp to zero; jump asap when out of warp From the gate: - use your moment of auto-cloak to look around and see if there are any gankers on stand-by. - If not, warp to zero to the next gate. - If there are, uncloak and recloak right away; mwd out of locking range of potential gankers; warp to zero.
For the orca: - Pray your EHP is enough to withstand suicide gankers - Use corp hangar for valuable stuff, as it can't be scanned

Best advice: never autopilot :)
Other advice, cov ops cloaking, multiple shipments, pay to get it done for you, use Entitys 130k ehp Itty, etc --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Covert ops blockaderunner DS transport (or orca, depending)
Transport uses cloak&MWD, orca uses AB to get into warp faster. If you drop the good into a container and make THAT a courier then it won't show up on scan, problem solved.

The most important thing is to keep the value of your cargo below the point at which it becomes profitable to gank you. Nothing else matters. The smaller the ship; the lower the value. With the exception of the cloaky hauler, which is what you would use to transport high value goodies. There is no tanking a gank. If they want to kill you, they'll bring enough ships. For freighters the magic number is 1 billion. Thats just below what would make it profitable for a 15 pilot crew to go through all the trouble of ganking you. That doesn't mean they won't do it anyway, but most of the time pirates are looking to make ISK.
If you do get a freighter, please consider joining Red Frog Freight. We definitely know how to haul right. |

I'd say the most important thing is to use a scout who can both jump ahead of you to look for traps and to insta-web you into warp.

This is an important point, especially if you have no choice but to use an industrial or a similarly gankable ship. However, for long term, regular hauling (e.g. a professional freight corp), it is time consuming and laborious. The scout is unnecessary if you keep the cargo value below the profitability threshold. That doesn't help with thrill kills, but then nothing does. |

A little tip is to make a deep instant warp from the Jita 4-4 location, especially if you are using a DST that is slower to align.
Quicker align times are always good, if you have cargo space to spare see if you can fit an Intertial Stab in the lows.
Be careful using ECM in Highsec. Locking you and doing a cargo scan is not considered agressive, but jamming the person locking you will get you Concorded.
Another choice over covert ops are Interceptors. They are generally faster and more agile and cheaper then a Covert Ops + Cloak. Every race has a ceptor that has a very fast AU warp so they can cover distances well. Plus once you have dropped off whatever you are delivering they can AFK back to where ever very quickly, just slap Overdrives in the lows or what not if you want to go that route. You can also auto pilot and pulse an MWD and they will go from 15km to 0km to the gate in all of 5 seconds.

Thank you all for the feedback. I feel I can fly a bit safer now :)
