This is a thought-provoking digital painting that reminded me of EVE. Maybe this is an image the original New Eden settlers saw while heading toward the EVE gate all those millenia ago...

Very nice picture, however it makes no sence to send people too old to reproduce to settle a new galaxy.

Thats what the baby is for (inb4 /b/tards), who knows how long it takes to get where they are going. Perhaps the grandmother and baby are part of a larger family not seen in the pic, perhaps just behind the "camera". It DOES make sense to send entire families as they are more tight-knit and less likely to have inter-social issues as you would if you sent huge numbers of standoffish strangers.

Yeah, but too much inbreeding and you get a race like the Amarr.

Maybe a more accurate EVE period would be during the initial expansion before the EVE gate was found. As I recall according to the lore, the Milky Way was more or less an industrial wasteland and blasted warzone, hence why the galaxy on the other side of the gate was called New Eden.

Ugh. Can we use test tubes though? I don't really *want* to do that.

I find it difficult to believe that a race advanced enough to exploit the hell out of an ENTIRE GALAXY was unable to produce FTL sufficiently advanced enough to get to a new one. Yeah, that always bothered me too. Never really made much sense, especially since they were able to make that super-gate work even after the natural wormhole closed.

It is a beautiful picture. Can't you all just enjoy the beauty of it and what it means? Just once enjoy something because it is and not because of politics of game or whatever.

Thankyou, friend. Thats why I posted it. We can posit whatever theories we want about pre-collapse era logistics later. For now, just look at the picture and wonder.

Yep yep, matriarchs are highly overrated. Maybe she was the scientist that brought to practice the physics that made the trip possible. Or; maybe it was one of the later voyages, with a much higher population, and who is better to take care of the little ones? A group of senior women that take pride in educating the little ones while their parents are busy taking care of the important things on board.

Maybe they did at some later point, after the gate collapsed. The timeline wouldn't include that. Or do you mean they would have traveled to New Eden specifically when another galaxy might be alot closer? Why would they? To see what happend to the NE settlers? Right... - In simplistic terms it has been said that there is enough Zero Point Energy in the volume the size of a coffee cup to boil away EarthÆs oceans. |

I would assume somewhere between [the dark ages of new eden] and [now], they had explored the galaxy to a point where sending an expedition wouldnt be entirely out of their reach.. Besides, after they conquer the next galaxy, that would have nearly doubled their resources . . . Surely they could expend a tiny fraction of that on New Eden. OHGODS BELOW THIS LINE IS MY SIG !!!! Edited by: Dorbin Callas on 26/02/2010 16:31:47 It is a beautiful picture.
I see a grandmother, perhaps a great grandmother, leaving with her family towards a new life. She could have stayed behind on Earth, but her husband has passed after decades of work on the colonization project.
Whether the journey takes a few days or a century, she has chosen to stay with her family to be with her children/grandchildren to pass on whatever wisdom she can for as long as she can. Being a Scientist, she realizes that knowledge is important, but she is also acutely aware that there are other ways to probe the universe that don't rely on the methods of Science. The methods of science are merely one tool among many. Yes, there is a place in the universe for accumulated wisdom, that goes well beyond a compilation of "facts".
If my children/grandchildren were to leave tomorrow on such a journey, I'm sure my wife and I would leave with them if we could. They might need a good Microbiologist.

And you know why the EVE gate collapsed? It was because they nuked it in order to stop the expeditionary forces from Earth that wanted to seize New Eve for themselves and their pointless wars over already depleted resources.
No. Wait.

Bookmarked.
I did not expect the picture to be that striking & beautiful.
It really shows the melancholy of leaving home.
Thanks for sharing.

Aparently scientists have been pondering why women go through menapause at a certain age. One idea is that having grandparents (who have no young children themselves) is very beneficial to humans, as they can help the parents bring up the kids.
So sending those grandparents into a new galaxy could make sense. _____________________
