All part of the money milking plan. Keep them new subs rolling in and current subs passified by pandering to the unwashed masses until critical mass is achived. Then run off with all the profits including the lifetime subs as the game withers and dies. Just like champions online.

The game might wither away to a small playerbase, but it is unlikely it will die even in that worst case scenario. The masses might not stay with the game or tolerate the milking, but trekkies have been milked for as long as I can remember. They have gotten used to it and some are even happy to support the franchise in any way they can. For those hard core trekkies the chance of living in a star trek universe is a dream come true and they aren't going to abandon it easily. Their hopes and dreams of what the game might some day become is enough to keep STO rolling on for some time.

I thought this was hilarious:
Quote: And while the Bridge of Death did trap people in a dungeon of space-pain it was also really hilarious. Besides, there were 30 dental members having fun, and 10 klingons at any one time not having fun. So, on average more people were having fun then not having fun.
THAT IS MATHMATICAL PROOF
Even the devs were cool about it, and while they didnt engage in our epic roleplay session I feel that they too had a good time.
P.S. My uncle is the top Chef at Paramount and hangs out with Roddenberry all the time and he says its fine.
Then even more funny was people telling him it couldn't be true as Roddenberry is actually DEAD!!

I saw the two videos...pretty damn hilarious
I also saw that whine thread...my god! I used to be a carebear myself in Eve, and I was NEVER that bad! Those whiny little *****es cry more than my eight month old son! And that "Death Bridge" trap was so bloody obvious I'm surprised it even worked enough to stir up that much of a hornet's nest. "Hey, beam on board my ship alone, I'll give you free stuff!" Seriously? What kind of mindless asshat thinks that is legit in the first place?
I was considering trying out STO, but the sheer stupidity and whininess (yes I know that isn't a real word. Deal with it ) of the player base that I saw in that thread is enough to stop me from doing so, not to mention the technical flaws with the game that I learned about earlier. I'm actually debating making an account on that forum purely to tell them they're a bunch of morons.

As to other people's MMO's ... I don't care what someone else plays. If they want to play WoW or EQ or STO or Barbie Online (I don't think that's a real game ...) I don't care.
I like the challenge of competing against other human beings. I'd played a lot of strategic/tactical turn based games and still enjoy them but after playing PS ... there just was no comparison between playing against an AI and another human being.
So ... here I am.
As to a Star Trek game's players having a negative reaction to what is routine in EVE ... I'm not in the least surprised at that. Trekker's, as they prefer to be called, have a whole different mind set than people playing EVE. While I've watched most Sci Fi space shows and have enjoyed the Trek shows for what they were ... I have known some Trekkers (whom I liked) fairly well ... and they're ... very special people ... lets put it that way.
If you look at the Trek series - what Rodenberry was creating was an ideal. Star Fleet was open only to the best and brightest of the Federation and the Star Ship Enterprise was the best ship in the Fleet. So, there is an entirely different tone to the Star Trek universe than there is to EVE. EVE is all about greed and power. In EVE you pretty much expect to be victimized by other players until proven otherwise. If you don't expect that - you are making a mistake. Say you are mining, not an inherently PVP enterprise (no pun intended) and some other ship comes into your belt - you watch what they do for a while. If they go off away from you and appear to be mining too ... then ... you keep frakking watching them. This can be mitigated to a degree by joining a corporation where at least in theory you are all on the same team ... however ... scams and betrayal are far from being unknown.
Look at the tone of the missions you are given. Go out and asssinate a disgruntled worker. Blow up the symposium and the scientists attending it who had the temerity to give your NPC Agent an Honorable Mention. Wipe out a heretical religious sect. The list goes on and on.
So, given these vastly different mind sets, I can well expect that those people coming to STO and expecting to find the nobility and honor of Star Fleet ... and finding the goons ... ( ... I'm laughing ... those poor *******s ...) ... were somewhat taken aback ... Ha! Ha! Ha! I don't have to watch the videos to laugh ... imagining the looks on their real life faces ... (oh ... those poor *******s) ... is so much better ...
*shrug*
But ... I ... am not worried about what the STO admins will do about this ... it's their game ... and they can try and set whatever kind of tone they want.
The thing is ... if you watched the Trek series ... there were any number of occasions when Kirk or Picard ran into beings not that much different from the goons ... so ... whatever they expected ... they really don't have much call for complaint.
"Shields Up! Red Alert! Trekkers Be On Your Guard!"

Ah, yes. Noticed that they had a third one soon after I posted this. That last one probably is the best one like you say I love how they had a lot of the USS Crybaby Threadnaught in there.
Even though I think that the Goons are a bunch of sick, twisted asshats I do have to admit: they have style, they're good at what they do, and they make surprisingly funny videos :)

I have this trekkie friend. Why he don't play EVE you ask?
Quote mail after declining a buddy invite I proposed to send him:
Quote: "EVE is a game where borderline psychopaths drool over spreadsheats while using all their inventiveness to find new ways to scam, take advantage of and grief their fellow human beeings. It is a game for ferengis and romulans. Nay, it is a game for those attracted to that perversion of Roddenberry's ideals found in Andromeda, made manifest in the machiavellian Nietzscean race of that fallen universe."

This guys fails at Star Trek as much as he fails at life. Lets start... The plural form of Ferengi is Ferengi similar to the way the plural form of sheep is sheep. Both Romulan and Frengi are empire names so they both should be capitalized.
Also I'd say Eve players are closer to the Cardassians. Backstabbing, distrust, spies, and paranoia, all of which are justified considering the society we live in. Also toss in some casual genocide for flavor. and further more why do i even need a sig? |

He mentions those traits as if they were a bad thing. Star Trek was hokey and entertaining at best, but unlike shows like Dr. Who, the "hokeyness" (hokiness?) in Star Trek was never intentional, which makes it the World of Warcraft of Science Fiction: entertaining and fun in small doses. Star Trek is to Sci-Fi what Star Wars Ep. 1 is to the Star Wars franchise.
Having said that, I always preferred the classic Star Trek. |

Eh ... I don't know if I would bother comparing Star Trek to anything else ... it's more like everything else is compared to Star Trek.
We owe all of our space ship movies, TV shows and video games to the first Star Trek. What it did as a TV show was revolutionary in that it was the first serious Sci Fi TV show about space ships. Everything that has happened since then - is influenced by Star Trek.
That said, it was an idealized version of the future - but that isn't necessarily a bad thing for a foundation.
Star Trek and Captain Kirk - may look a little hokey now - but at the time it was very cutting edge stuff.
I don't watch any of the ST shows any more because I've seen them all so many times. It's about the same thing with Star Wars Ep. 4. At one point in time my nephews had that on laser disk and they watched it EVERY DAY when they came home from school ... Although, watching it in episode sequence did lend a new depth to it.
Any way ... yeah ... that quote by the Trekkie up there did have it's points. But, it's kind of like when the Chief of Staff of the Army called the Marines fanatics. Most of the Marines just laughed. I know I did.

And that's why I prefer the first Star Trek to all the others. For 1960's tv, it was really cutting edge and forward-thinking. It was original. Never could stand TNG. Andromeda was pretty cool for the few episodes I saw, but nothing to keep me interested.
