I think the commentators are doing a fine job for what they are doing.
Eve isn't sc2. You can't just look at a build-order and automatically know what the player is going to do. This is the AT and people will field ecm rifters and armor sleipnirs. Perhaps it would be cool if the commentators could get full fittings before a match so they could better prepare their commentary, but this being eve I doubt people would trust it/want it.
I also would reiterate on what others have said and request more tactical camera footage of the battle instead of extreme closeups of wrecks/frigates/drones. I mean sure, some eye-candy now and then is appreciated, but now it's like 95% eye-candy 5% tactical shots of positions. |

Well yes, obviously once the ships start flying and the game is underway you can start seeing what the fits are capable of. However, at that point the commentators have already been talking for at least half a minute. As I understand it they have to keep talking, watch the stream which is as delayed as for us, use the client to look around and see what's happening, while trying to form theories about what's going on.
That's a lot to do at the same time.
Then also trying to explain why certain ships are better then others is simply too much I think. It will take their mind of what is going on and it takes up precious time better spent explain what is actually happening. Explain why setup x or ship y is good is better left to the after-match studio segment, which we will no doubt see return after the pre-lims.
I think last year they had a sort of good rhythm at some point. Put the two teams into categories, kite/rush/ecm/whatever, give an idea of what to expect based on previous showings of similar setups, point out stuff happening in the match, talk about the teams and/or setups while nothing is happening. Like what potential linchpins could be or fail situations for the team that has the upper hand.
I don't think it's realistic to talk about resistances and ammo. Sure with missiles you can now see what ammo is being used, same with lasers. But with hybrid and projectiles it will be hard to spot.
In short. I think it's just not feasible to get all the data fast enough to comment on such details and there really isn't enough time to hold short intros into certain practices. I expect once the studio segment gets added we will get some more in-depth analysis and explanations. |
