...we just dont give a **** about no one And from what a saw this far, the big part of russian gamers are hardcore in terms of game understanding. Most of them not just want to be good, they want to be the best. Maybe that is what makes me enjoy the company of russian players, idk.

Problem is i have to use an online translator back and forth if i want to understand even the smallest bit of what they are saying...
Once a guy sold me a ****load of salvage in 1 go, I messaged him if he could supply more and all i got back was a wall of russian text, ran it trough the translator but didnt made any sense at all : /
So I used the translator to send something back in russian and never got a reply..
So yeah, i mostly ignore/stay away from them. But then again I cant really approve of any of this because this is my signature |

They start with charisma 1, btw. And perception 25, but you have to use boosters (Standard Russian Booster, after that, your perc drops to 5, but instead you gain +40% dmg to all weapon systems amd +25% to your shields. Unfortunately, there is a drawback - your tracking start sucking ass.
If you choose a female Russian instead, you start with 20 charisma. You cannot lower it before you train the skill "Marriage" - lv1 should do it. After that, you gain -3 charisma each 6months; At lv5 of "Marriage" you will finally be able to train the absolute endgame skills, "Pregnancy" and "Fat Mother".

I think it's about time they were given their own server like China. Or better still, just put them on the Chinese server. I mean lets be honest, they don't integrate with the community, and have an unfair advantage as most of them are funded by rich Mafia mobsters and RMT operations.
And another thing. How is it in a country where a Big Mac still costs a months wages so many of them have computers and broadband connections. Go figure!

I like the letters they use. The Cyrillic? alphabet has some pretty nice looking letters.
Unfortunately, I don't know what they mean, but it's still awesome.
There's a few areas around Amarr highsec where for whatever reason, there's more Russian players. And I think it really adds to the game in a way, makes it feel larger, that you're flying around, and you can enter an area where people are different.
So yeah, I like having the Russian players around. It makes the game more enjoyable.

thx for all the laughter
There is : on our keyboards, but we usually use it only in "simple" smile, as :). But do not use it when we want to make MORE smile )))))))))
And why we often talk russian in local chanels? Beacause we want to talk to our own, for we definitely know there are some in local, so why should we create another channels or speak english? When what we speak should bother others - only then we will speak to them so they could understand. Russian is one of the languages you can make speeches in UN, actually.

I ignore anybody who speaks any language other than English, not because I think they shouldn't be playing the game, but because I can't understand them and they clutter up the chat, potentially bumping things said in English that might be of relevance to me off the page.

I hate them. They go beyond PvP pirating and in my experience they are just total ganking griefers. They kill for killing sake and their bio's are usually abusive and offensive. I have personally made the decision to boycott all things russian on the basis of the character shown by the pack dog russians I have met in game. If there was a russian free server I would go to it. Aggressive, pack like, abusive, nihilistic, hate filled and to be treated with contempt is my feeling ;)

I find Russians to be very ambitious. They aren't afraid to let others know what's on their mind even if it means less happy faces. They do whatever it takes to win and nothing else. They do it because they want to, not because they want a bigger e-peen.

In my mind, the original Red Alliance (most of whom have left in the last couple years as far as I know) owned more than BoB or Goons or anyone else ever has.
Brute force or skullduggery or whatever else, they did it all, and they did it with attitude.
Makes me wish sometimes that CCP kept the game how it was when Eve was still a small popular niche game, instead of catering to the masses.

At first I thought this was a troll thread, y'know? Because it sounds kinda silly to me to engage in a debate about a rl group inside a game about internet spaceships. But, since this is actually happening, I'll bite.
Having people speak their own language in local, if anything, adds ambience to the game. When I hear alliance/corp people speaking their own language to each other in vent, I like that ****. Besides that, in matters of pvp, or smacktalkong, I highly doubt you can find behavior that "the russians" do that you cant find being done by anyone else.
Now, I realize that some people in this thread have adopted the stance of "put them in their own server," and I think that is pretty stupid. Honestly, I wouldn't mind if China was in our server as well.
tl;dr
Taking stances about people in games based on nationalist identities is as stupid as taking stances based on "race" in games. You might as well make a thread discussing "what do you think about blacks/asians/hispanics playing EVE?"

it's not bad manners to speak your own language to each other what is bad manners and down right lack of common decency is to spam the crap out of public channels with cyrillics.
your not the only people who don't have english as a first language and yet your the ones who spam your language the most where as others understand that in public channels it's good manners to speak the language of the server in this case "english"
asking in channel once or twice in your native tongue is perfectly fine but having a convo between 2 russians in a local with hundreds of people who don't understand it is just rude

If they walked up to a group of people speaking Language A and started talking loudly in language B, which no one else understands so that it disrupted the original conversation, probably, yes. If they were sitting at a table of their own and speaking quietly amongst themselves, no, not at all. The former is the closer analogy to local chat, though.
It's not "how dare they speak Language X amongst themselves", it's the fact that, in chat, unless you block people, you have no choice but to see this other conversation in chat that 90% of the people in that channel don't understand. To 90% of the people, it might as well be gibberish, because they don't understand it. It's very easy to start private conversations or private channels, so there's really no need to carry on a lengthy conversation in some other language in local chat. Something like "Anyone here speak Russian?" would be perfectly OK, but carrying on a lengthy conversation in some other language in local is what I consider rude.
For an example: I've played Killing Floor (a co-op horror FPS) on Japanese servers quite a bit. Since I barely speak any Japanese, I realize that I'm in the minority and if I were to repeatedly speak on voice-chat in English, it would probably be considered annoying to the other players on the server. Being a considerate person, I refrain from talking unless someone says something to me in English (there are built-in commands and responses that are translated for each version of the client, so communication is possible without speaking the language).
Basically, as the saying goes, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do."

"According to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), the word xenophobia consists of two parts: xeno (a combining form meaning "guest, stranger, person that looks different, foreigner") and phobia, ("fear, horror or aversion, especially if morbid").[1]
It is more broadly defined in the Dictionary of Psychology "a fear of strangers". [2] As defined by the OED, it can mean a fear of or aversion to, not only persons from other countries, but other cultures, subcultures and subsets of belief systems; in short, anyone who meets any list of criteria about their origin, religion, personal beliefs, habits, language, orientations, or any other criteria. While some will state that the "target" group is a set of persons not accepted by the society, in reality only the phobic person need hold the belief that the target group is not (or should not be) accepted by society. While the phobic person is aware of the aversion (even hatred) of the target group, they may not identify it or accept it as a fear.
As with all phobias, a xenophobic person has to genuinely think or believe at some level that the target is in fact a foreigner. This arguably separates xenophobia from racism and ordinary prejudice in that someone of a different race does not necessarily have to be of a different nationality." ...

Well, thanks for not falling into the "OMG racism!" mindset, but nothing I wrote indicates xenophobia either--just that people should have some level of courtesy and respect for the environment they are in and not disrupt it. Personally, I find having to mentally filter out Cyrillic while reading local to sometimes be distracting and kind of rude, particularly if people are having a lengthy conversation or just spamming something repeatedly. Though to be honest, I find contract spam in English even more distracting and rude.
If the situation were reversed (me in a predominantly Russian channel), I wouldn't spam English or carry on a conversation with the one person out of 100 that can understand me in that channel. It has nothing to do with fear of dislike of any particularly nationality or thinking that my language or nationality is superior.

I absolutely agree with you on using English on the forums as English is generally accepted as the lingua franca in the gaming community. As it is by me. Really, most people in EvE wouldn't understand a thing I wrote in my native language, me being Dutch.
But Forum rule #27 states: 'Please use English when posting on the forums as a courtesy to other players unless the forum channel is specifically created for discussions in another language.' Which is more like a request (although a strong one...) than a demand. As opposed to all other forum rules which can only be read as 'Thou shall!' and/or 'Thou shall not!' Then again, I urge anybody to adhere to the request in rule 27, otherwise we end up in Babylon EvE.....

EVE Local channel exists to facilitate communication between players in the same star system. It allows this without having to open a separate channel. It is used for asking questions, calling for help, smack talk, naughty words, and ascii art depicting genitalia, among other things; all in any language that a particular speaker deems necessary to serve his purpose. The Local channel is by nature a public channel. This means that it is for everyone.
CCP gave players the tools to moderate their exposure to what those players perceive as objectionable. These tools range from blocking unwanted speakers to organizing a custom channel where the owner can make up the rules and enforce them how they see fit (I purposefully do not mention CCP/GM moderation as that is a special case with its own set of rules).
Given all of the above, certain people in this thread single out the Russian population of EVE, many of whom utilize an official Russian language EVE client and like to speak their own language to each other. In a PUBLIC channel. This attempt at segregation does look decidedly xenophobic. Any attempt to rationalize this desire using contrived IRL analogies is just externalization of some inner issues. ...

Ok, so do you think the forums should be open to all languages also? They are publicly available to all EVE player as well. Would you enjoy having to scan through the forums trying to find threads in languages you can understand?
The very public nature you mention implies to me that it shouldn't be used for conversations between two people in a language that the rest of the channel can't understand, or really any language for that matter. If you want to have a lengthy discussion with one other person, no matter the language, just take it to a private conversation. As you said, local is a public channel and should be used for discussions that everyone can join in, should they so choose.
The majority of people all over the world that play EVE seem to have no problem reading and writing intelligible English in public channels. I don't see why this is such an issue for Russians.
Anyway, I don't really care what you think "looks" xenophobic, to be honest.

CCP made the rule that these forums are English only. There are plenty of other language EVE resources on the internet for those that need them. CCP made no such rule for in-game chat channels. Additionally, and I reiterate, CCP produced non-English EVE clients specifically for those players that prefer their own language to English for whatever reasons.
See how this works?

This does not answer a single point I made in my previous post. You have not provided a single valid argument in support of your original contention that speaking Russian in Local is somehow rude. Regardless, the public nature of Local implies no such thing to me. It is up to an individual player to decide how they'd like to use it. This is another of your self serving rationalizations.

Basically, this lapsus is where your subconscious reveals your true feelings. Who, exactly, are The Romans in the eveorld? The phrase you quote is used in reference to people who, either on a permanent or temporary basis, move from one part of the world to another where the inhabitants may practice different beliefs, customs, etc, that are different to the ones that the traveler is familar with and accostomed to. How is there any parallel to this in the eveworld, where communication and interraction takes place on a global scale, where there is no region that one moves 'from' and 'to' in order to respect local customs? I suggest that you assume English speakers to be the Romans, and therefore, by extension, the whole eveworld is their Rome. This is the logic of the quoted phrase - either that or you have used an innapropriate phrase to support your argument. This is a pristine example of xenophobia, and not only that, it is an example of cultural imperialism.

Cut off one head, and another one reappears, I admire perseverance. We had them beaten down to one system, one station, X number of POS's holding Sov. And what did the coalition do? Vote to go up north and wack a nest of new pilots that would lead to the alliance between RA and Goons and well, the rest as they say is history. Sandbox indeed.
Their smack is the best smack there is. And once we started using babblefish to translate and respond it got *really* interesting in local..
As a noob back from a longish break after launch, I joined TCT corp in LV and moved down to detorid (in nothing but a shuttle). Soon after I got settled in my new, scary scary 0.0 system a roving pack of scary Russian players with xXDeathXx for a corp came trolling through our systems. I am not ashamed the say they scared the crap out of me, and I hid my skill point deficient self in the station whenever they would show up. And I did what any self respecting pilot in Eve would do when they can't actually *do* anything: I smacked 'em. They got me a couple times, but I somehow managed to evade more than a few gate camps over the years - once in a Bestower even..
I smacked MacTep rather well once after jumping into his gatecamp and then evading it with the new at the time "logoffski" feature. Lets just say, from thousands of miles away, I could feel the hate. :) I also felt somewhat ashamed at what I'd done, as by that time I was flying with Shinra of LV and logoffski was a huge scandal, and a serious taboo that LV pilots were not supposed to be doing. I did it because I was ****ed about some of them doing it earlier, and I was also ****ed because I didn't want to "lose" to a gate camp. Mactep was ****ed, cursed at me in Russian, and probably channeled several other angry sounded long dead languages, and I either convo'ed them and offered to give them the isk amount for my ship and modules, or fly back and let them blow me up. I think I gave them isk.
If you aren't what they would consider to be an ally - don't trust them (in game). They are skilled pilots, they know they're **** and they will do whatever it takes to win. And moving them to their own server would be stupid. Ever story needs a villain that the people can rise up against.
Question:
All that crap about the Russian mafia funding players, that's crap right?

I am not personally annoyed by that (at least it is communication, not contract spam) but I think people are bothered on some level by other language talking because of implied "I am not interested in talking to and with you, because you do not speak Russian" message.

This. And it's not implied, it's direct. If you aren't Russian, you aren't Russian, and well - they don't care about you, and see themselves as separate from "us" and don't care for us unless we owe them money, have something they want, or are at war with them [in game], In this very thread someone argued why it should be ok to carry on a conversation between two people in Russian in local despite the fact that 100 other people wouldn't know WTF was being said thus walls of Cyrillic text would be meaningless spam. This viewpoint is foreign to them, they simply do not consider this a "rude" thing to do. Euro and North American players do though, but we need to remember that what is rude to us, might not be rude to them. They're not bad Russians because they're spamming local, they just don't give a **** if it's rude, or whatever. They going to have their conversation. :)
I've always been someone fascinated with how the earlier Alliances (no knowledge of who's allied with whom these days really) seemed to all line up ~ for the most part ~ with RL geopolitical alliances / enemies. Russians against everyone else, and Romanians.. Well, don't **** with Romanians. You never know what they're going to do next. :) I wonder if the current state of Russia and their seemingly isolationist "we're still better than you and we don't need you" is why in Eve, they behave the way they do. It's not unheard of to see Americans fighting the French, or other corps from our traditional allied nations, but do Russians ever fight Russians alongside outsiders? Is Russian society improving?

Well if race is not the correct word then racisim is also incorrect.
You are looking for ethnocentrism
Erradicating the belief in different races is one of the things necessary for us to change to have a chance at advancing as World wide population. But by all means, continue to use a word that was created for the sole purpose to divide and create false paradigms of ethnic superiority.

Wow, I haven't seen this much raci-- err xenophobia since FFXI. Curiously enough, 99% of it was ignorant misconceptions. I lived in the JP timezone and played constantly with people whos english was as terrible as my japanese with few problems. Still, it wasn't perfect. There was a barrier to cross. Autotranslate helped, but not much. So I ended up learning some japanese, at least enough to break through the artificial walls the xenophobes (on both sides) had erected. The americans thought the japanese were elitist and snobbish, whereas the japanese thought the americans were terrible players and immature. The reality was every player was different, there were just as many elitists and noobs on both sides.
Well that rant went on a little too long, back to eve. If two russians chatting in local bothers you, it's your problem, not theirs or the rest of eves. If it really, really bothers you, learn to use the inbuilt game functions that allow you to block people who bother you. Or just learn a little russian. Why the hell you want to listen to the crap in local though is the real mystery. Most of the 'english' is below the level of what a four year old scrawls with their first crayon set.

This is not racism or xenophobia.. is simple prejudice.
When someone say "they all do this" That is prejudice because they certainly do not all do this. They do not all look the same either.
It is easy to post in forums with time to think and translation software on other screen. Put me in game and someone shooting at me and sorry.. no English for you. I teach you many new word.
Someday.. when people meet new people in space.. and they speak differently.. just put them on block and see how this work for you.

Help me understand.
Are the Russian-speaking players causing you some difficulty by speaking their own language in Local, or is that just your own blind anger?
Of all the things someone may do to me in EVE, speaking in a language I don't understand ranks last on my "OMG That Just Bothered Me" scale. I mean, so what? This game has a localized Russian client, and so evidently lends itself to that demographic quite well. Even if it didn't, why does it bother you? The fact that you can't understand it only means you're ignorant of their language, but your frustration about it means you're something much worse. --

I'd like to start by saying that english is not my native language. I'm portuguese and it's, amoung with russian and mandarin (chinese), one of the hardest languages in the world to master.
I feel no need, and in fact, feel insulted if someone tells me to play the game with the client in my language. Don't ask me why, but probably because portuguese have a very "non-nationalistic" way to live life. I don't care what language you're speaking. The problem with russians (or not), is the same as the spanish or french, but worse. They are nationalistic. They love their country, their language and just plain ignore everyone else because they are just inferior. Try to get a spanish to speak english with you... good luck! Same as the french... good luck with that!
I've been to Russia (Moscow), as I've been to Spain and France more than once. They all share that cultural aspect. Been to the UK... they don't care... been to indonesia, they don't care if you're making smoke signals... they try to understand you and do signal you back!
I have 0 problems with russians or whatever language is on in local. Couldn't care less about it, but I tend to simply not like any person that acts as if their culture is superior so they don't even try to adapt to a "world" that's multi-cultural. So that being said, I dislike Russians, French, Spanish, Chinese, Koreans (from those I know personally from my experience) just because their culture is nationalistic... hate it!
I have spanish work mates and I tell them that about the spanish... they agree! :) I can live with it, but I don't have to like it. I have a mate in EVE that's romanian. He's decent to speak in english with his mate when I'm around. If I'm AFK they go at it in romanian. For me this is logic and standard good manners.
I apply one principle in my life. Treat others as you like to be treated. So if I have alot of people in one room and I have a PT friend with me, I won't be going off loudly in portuguese just because others are ignorant of my language. I either go to a corner and speak privatly or just speak in a language that can be understood by any that want to understand, that being english. Not because I love native speaking countries, but it's a fact that it's the most common language for different cultures.

EVE is awesome precisely because the gameworld is mixed with people from all over the world. It's actually tremendously disappointing that the Chinese government wouldn't allow CCP to have the Chinese in "proper" EVE as well. I'm glad the Russian Federation wasn't as short-sighted.
I hope they keep speaking their native language and others continue to do so as well. Really makes the game feel like an expansive galaxy and not like every other MMO which segregates people away from each other.

You know, when I first started playing this game, it was precisely so that I could run into people who were NOT americans. The main attraction to eve wasn't the "sandbox" or the "spaceships" or the serious business that followed. It was the idea that a 20 year old kid who was stuck working a dead end job and going to college could log into an online game and meet people from around the world, even if I didn't have the money to travel! That was a lot of fun for me.
Sadly, that changed with time. I found that MOST people, no matter where they come from, don't like outsiders. If you don't speak their language, forget about getting in. Which is too bad. It showed me that (atleast among this gaming community) the world of gamers wasn't too much different from the ethnocentric communities which I come from. Some do get the chance to play with others, and congrats to them, but the closest I ever got to being in a "foreign" corp was ANZAC. That was awesome too, I remember jumping on their TS for the first time and getting the chance to hear 30 different variations of "G'day mate". Too bad I will never get to hear 30 variations of "guten tag" or any other language for that matter.

On another note, why the hell are these forums english only? Filter options and "choose language" options when creating threads could easily divide up the threads into "preferenced languages" selections. That way you could have everyone posting here, only you won't see them because you won't have posts labeled in russian selected in your preferences. That way, all those folks who hate english speakers can smack here and all the english speakers who hate everyone else can smack here too. The only language barrier you need is a filter options button.
EVE ONLINE is an international game, lets make it look that way FFS.

Well, it's not that simple. From a biological point of view the whole thing gets pretty complicated. I personally think that you can't really speak of human races, but there are other points of view on that. It certainly is not just a "fact" though.
Maybe you can speak about races from cultural perspective, but that's not my area of expertise, so i don't really care about that.

On topic: most of the Russians I have met were nice people. One russian corp helped one of my corpmates out of w-space after the wh collapsed on him.

Originally by: Stray Bullets I'd like to start by saying that english is not my native language.
Not because I love native speaking countries, but it's a fact that it's the most common language for different cultures.
this says everything that needs said really

oh trust me, some Russians see English as "random symbols". in fact many Russians never learned English because our schools give us a choice of 2nd language: English or German. and some non-Russian corps do the same =) BTW what's the point of sending us to the Chinese server? we speak Russian, not Chinese.
don't judge the book by its cover. if you find a few Russians rude/bad mannered/etc, look at people in your own country and you will see the same situation: some people are like that, some are not. the only thing i don't like is that many of us speak Russian where it is asked(like on the forums) to speak English only(Rookie Help for example)
P.S. most of the time these auto-translators are totally useless......sometimes even a live translator might end up in a difficult situation

As a native russian speaker I tried to hang out in the russian channel, and was amazed. I have not seen so much hatred in a very long time. Hatred towards americans, ukrainians, georgians, israellies, and towards each other. I don't mean towards countries or governments. I mean towards people.
In addition to that, the swearing in that channel is considered a norm. As in, every other line.
I've tried a few times, but it usually takes me about half hour to get fed up and leave. Even the english rookie channel seems peaceful and friendly after that.

I dont like the idea that local chat has to be in English. Corp, Alliance and the other private chat channels can have a default language because the players that are in those have chosen to be there and will agree on a standard form of communication.
Non-English in local makes it seem more natural because not everyone in game can speak English and should not be forced to while playing. It can also give some of them a bit of an advantage as people can talk in their native language which i wont understand and at the same time will probably be able to understand what I say as the majority of the Eve population do speak English.
these forums are a different matter though. When posting here you intend for your message to be seen by everyone and as English is the most commonly spoken language in the Eve community it waschosen as the language of choice here. Which was luck for me as its the only one i speak :) |

Well, maybe it's because I live in London but I don't care what people speak in game in the local channel. What they say is not for me and even if I knew what they were saying I would not be interested. The forums are different as that's for discussion.
So I have no opinion on the Russians who speak Russian at all. I treat people the way they treat me and I've long realised people are individuals but can be subject to group think which the various languages seem to get into in internet games. But really there are far more important things in life as to what language players want to use, hence the bait and switch comment in the second post I made.
What some seem to totally ignore is that English is not spoken everywhere and in a game with complex concepts it's impossible for some to communicate in it so why the hell do people expect them to? Try speaking a foreign language with no knowledge of it yourself and see how that goes.

I love Russians.
Lowsec would be a much quieter place without their roaming fail-blobs.
I wouldn't get to discuss our mothers through google translate and discuss matters of honour and justice with a rich and proud culture.
I wouldn't get to shoot badly fitted and flown tacklers while the rest of the blob sits 120km away.
I wouldn't be able to play, "GUESS THE RESPONSE TIME", with my corp whenever I kill a lone Russian pilot. We take bets on how long it is before ALL THE BATTLESHIPS turn up.
I wouldn't get to reconnect with my fellow pilots while our station is being lagbombed.
Ah yes, my local Russians are pretty cool and it doesn't matter that they don't speak English. It's much, much funnier that way in fact. You can either have some badly translated comedy misunderstandings ("Apparently he's telling me to quiet my goldfish?") or, and this is better, broken english at random intervals ("QUIET YOUR GOLDFISH NOOB").
I quite admire the way they follow each other around in one giant ball of Drakes. Putting the 'irate' into 'Pirate' |

I'd guess that you have no heroes on your walls do you? What movies do you watch? What other games do you play? Are the Russians the bad guys or at least look to be Russian? Don't go pointing your finger at others until you take a good long look at your own brainwashing Government and society.

You fail at reading and comprehension. I think you need to read the whole thread, find the link that I provided to the Stanford Genome Project, and read up. Genetic differences does not equal a different race.
Show me a scientific taxonomy tree that has branches for each of the worlds "ethnic populations". You can't because the genetic differences are not different enough to constitute different branches. If you had an inkling of biology, and understood how human civilization has advanced over the last few thousand years, you would understand this.

Sorry if I can't come up with a nice edutainment piece with all flashy branches and stuff. Surely the major networks are working on an unbiased broadcast with maximum effort. But here is a written example for measurable differences in races. I guess this requires they exist. And I'm not even Asian.
Originally by: Slade Trillgon If you had an inkling of biology, and understood how human civilization has advanced over the last few thousand years, you would understand this.
The idea of "civilization" is not governed by biology. At least this is what guys like you usually argue like. Socio-cultural-blabla. Mankind has advanced over the last few thousand years? In what place do you live?

The prejudice in this thread is terrifying, though I suspect most of it stems from Americans south of 37 degrees latitude. Something happened during the cold war driving large populations from the two superpowers into ******ism. American's (as well as any of us Westerners) can and will be just as rude, stupid and untrustworthy as any Russian/slavic.
English, my mother toungue, is not "La lingua franca", not yet. The public chanel is PUBLIC, let them speak Russian, its certainly not rude, don't be so touchy. Don't move them to their own server, they are large important players in EVE's politics and they add flavour, hell if the Chinese government would allow it I would want the Chinese on our server and my blind-xenophobia for the Chinese is duly acknowledged.
Remember, english being so widely spoken is a side effect of the now failed colonial age. It doesent make us better in any way.
I can't believe I'm considered "conservative" up here.

Right. I have to say that I have encountered this Xenophobic crap only once in EVE and it was not to do with Russians.
I really like trying to communicate with people in their own languages, especially when it's clear that the people I'm trying to talk to in EVE do not speak much English. The only foreign language I speak is Arabic, so I make extensive use of online translators and stuff like that to try and muddle my way through conversations.
I have mostly done this chatting to Frenchies in Molden Heath, but I have tried talking to Russians and the translators don't work that well. I get a lot of ???!??!?!?!? Replies. But eventually get some good convo's going with lots of )))))))) LOL.
Now this one time I was in Molden Heath in a Las Pilgrim and I shot down this guy minining in a Hulk, in a 0.2, with a Thanatos guarding the Hulk. So he starts calling out in Local I'm a pirate (but I didn't randsome so dunno what he is going on about) and smacking me etc. The only others in local were French, and spoke no English. So they started asking in Local in french if anyone spoke french, because they did not know what this dude was saying. So I told them what I had done, told them he was very upset because I killed his ship and I am looking for targets.
Now, the guy got really mad. He started yelling stuff about how it's rude to speak in Local in anything but English. Blah Blah. This I continued to translate to the French. Who were like WTF?!?!?
After a while I just stopped speaking it and spoke to the guy and asked him how the flying **** am I suppose to speak to people who can't speak English, without using their native tongue. It isn't rude, it's just ****ing logical to attempt to translate what they say, and try and speak back to them in their own language.
This same principle applies to speaking Russian in Local, or any language. You only assume it's rude because you feel that you are being left out of the conversation. It does not mean it is rude.
If it was a dinner table, and everyone was speaking 1 language and you were not, and you were a guest and felt left out, then yes it's rude for the other diners to not attempt to speak to you in your language.
But it is not rude to walk into a bar full of English speakers, go over to your 2 Russian/French/German/Whatever mates and speak their language, as loudly as others in the bar.
If anything, peoples attempts NOT to communicate with foreign speakers is rude, not the other way around you Globally ignorant ****s. The majority speakers, should make the effort to speak to the minorities.
All this talk about how they should open seperate chat channels just to have a conversation. Really? That's a really incivilised thing to say people. It's pretty backward and I can only hope life stamps you and that attitude out pretty quickly.

Horse and donkey are different species btw. Bringing up a black horse like a white horse will probably have little effect on its load bearing abilities.
The reason that races are fairly irrelevent is that there can be greater genetic variance between members of what is supposedly a race than there is between two people of supposedly different races.

If you read my previous post, this only serves to prove if, if you can call this story proof of anything. Curiously, you found french players who, just like the Russian, but on a lower percentage per player, will never even try to understand you if you're not speaking French.
Tough I can understand that some people might not actually have had a opportunity and/or motivation to learn english, I simply have zero respect for someone who doesn't make an effort to understand and / or be understood!
In all other regards, in game, I couldn't care less if their going off with smack in romanian, russian, indian or hilbilly american... it's all the same and gets ignored in the same way

"I simply have zero respect for someone who doesn't make an effort to understand and / or be understood!" - Even if Engrish is considered as international language I never met Engrishman/USman who can speak more then 1 language. There are some Russians (who can speak engrish well) I know do not speak eng. on purpose. Their thoughts are like that: "If that guy never bothered learning any other language then why should I bother paying attention to him or make any effort doing as he says?". Actually I think they have a point on that, the world is not just US/UK and "others".
