Not really a new player here but my job has pretty much kept me in hi-sec the last couple years.
However,
I quit my job and am gonna take a year or so off and i'm planning a lot of null sec in that year. Unfortunately all I seem to hear about are recruitment scams all over the place and I haven't really figured out how to be 100% sure if the corp that wants me to join is legit,
The last corp I almost joined..everything was looking good, then the recruiter suggested I bring my 4.5 bil golem into nullsec as a ratter which set off some alarm bells. Then I realized the authorization page i was sent to had a totally different url to the actual alliance page(which had it's own authorization page) . Luckily I noticed all this before creating any courier contracts.
Now I'm just totally paranoid. I feel like I can't trust anyone and I'll be taking a chance no matter who I join. How can I be sure the corp that's inviting me actually wants me to join and doesn't want to just steal my stuff? |

1.) NEVER pay anybody to join a corp. It's a scam.
2.) NEVER let people ship all your stuff into null-sec. Start with some smaller (less expensive) ships to check the alliance / corp / null-sec out. If in time you find these guys trustworthy you can always bring in more (expensive) ships to use.
3.) Do some background research on the corp. Search the forums about what they do (if they steal people's stuff, those people will complain on forums), check their kill-board, check EVEwho.com (it shows who is in the corp + when people joined / left), join their public chat for a while to talk to them (get to know the guys).

The only corp I know of who have the fake AUTH website is GSF, the rest aren't nearly as clever about it. Sadly, had you taken even 5seconds to research the name you'd see they neither recruit EvE players and if you do, you're being scammed.
Ask yourself "what is in it for them if I join?" and if you can't think of a better reason than "my stuff" then it's likely a bad call.
General tips:
-Check out the recruitment forums, I believe they're all basically legit.
-Use the recruitment channel in game. It is an offense to *POST* a recruitment scam in that channel (but if you get a random conversation request, it's your risk).
Certain corp types are higher risk (WH corps, Nullsec corps) as your stuff is never totally secure.

To answer your question, use common sense and youl be fine, dont trust people with too much of your stuff, and dont pay ISK to join for any reason. |

Recruitment scams = I.Q. & gullibility tests. If you fall for them, you will fall for anything, hence they don't want you in their corp.
Why does the Nigerian e-mail scam still exist? Because they are looking for the most gullible people, which makes it easier to maximize their take.
1. Never pay ISK to join a corp.
2. Always ask for collateral on courier contracts to cover the full cost of items.
3. Don't move everything you own into their space. You might find it hard to get out later.
Do a Google search. Do a forum search (evesearch.com). Do a killboard search (eve-kill.net) Know the corp, alliance, and people you are dealing with (recruiters).
The golden rule of EVE: Everything good or bad that happens to you is because of your own actions or inaction. (i.e. it is always your own fault, or your own victory.)

That and study mandarin full time but yes mostly I want to take a break and play EVE.
Thanks for all the responses guys. I feel much better equipped now. As I said I was able to catch on before I lost anything so no harm done.

The only thing a corp should ask from you is pertinent information.
like a limited api key etc.
They want to know your corp history, who you were with and why. What you want to do in game.
Eve is different because with good corps theres usually an application to fill out and a review process. Its not like: "hey join my guild!" or at least it shouldn't be.

1. Forums
2. A website
3. Voice coms
4. A clear mission statement
Never put money down. You canot join Test or Goons unless you are either a redditter or a something awful member.
