Edited by: Gilbert T on 05/03/2010 03:43:58 For any of you who don't already know this, there is a native Linux Ventrilo compatible client now. It's called Mangler (http://www.mangler.org/).
It supports PulseAudio and ALSA and has pretty much all of the features that the Windows client has, and it will support OSSv4 if (anonymous coward) ever gets off his butt and implements it.
I suggest using the developer snapshot or subversion sources since a lot has been done since version 1.0.1.

This program rocks -- plain and simple...
As a note: Mangler's author provides unstable source for those wanting to compile Manger which only requires ALSA (for those that don't use Pulse). I use this build on my Arch_64 OS, and I have had no stability issues.

Anyone using Ventrilo should use Mangler as their client. The most recent subversion now has Pulse Audio, ALSA, OSS, and OSSv4 support. When compiling the client, you have the following options: --without-pulseaudio , --without-alsa , --without-oss . If you run OSSv4 make sure you update the soundcard.h file to the OSSv4 version, located in: /usr/include/sys/soundcard.h .

Tried to compile it on slackware for a couple hours, total fail. It was much easier to install vent, no offense. This is clearly a signature. |

I found Mangler very easy to install on Fedora 12. Been using it for a few months. It is awesome and I have had no problems at all with it.
Manger 1.2.0 Beta is out and featuers: * OSSv4 support! * A new configuration file system. Your config file will be automatically migrated from ~/.manglerrc to a newly created directory of ~/.mangler * The ôsend silentyö option is available for setting comments * An on-screen display (overlay) is available * Support for the celt codec (note that the Windows/Mac client will not be able to hear this) * You can right click on the status icon to mute or quickly open the settings window * You can adjust the master volume by using the mouse scroll wheel on the status icon * The server ban list editor is available * The server properties editor is available * You can specify command line arguments to automatically connect to a server at startup * Channel mute is supported * User mute state is remembered * Ability to record to VRF format (compatible with the Windows/Mac client) * Some TTS notifications * G15 Keyboard support (requires g15daemon to be running) * User paging support * Many new, exciting and mysterious bugs were added!

Just wanted to say that I have been using Mangler lately and it's performing great with Ubuntu 9.10. Works so well I uninstalled ventrilo. |
