I am no longer ônewö at this game.á I started early last year, took a 3 month hiatus, and restarted this year.á I have learned many things along the way, and some things that new pilots can learn from.á Some are experiences, others simply observations, and some are downright obvious.á But having played in PvE and PvP (and being horrible at the latter), I have made some costly mistakes.á I have had to commit suicide in wormhole space with my implants.á I have flown a battleship into battle and lost, and was waving my fist at 2 virtual frigates on a screen.á In no particular order, here are some things I have learned. á You will die. á A lot. á And once you get good at things and understand how the game works, you will end up getting wtfbbqpwnzored by 2 people in frigates, and your battleship will be burning with you inside.á They will demand you hand over more isk than you have in your virtual wallet, and you will realize that, in fact, you still know nothing about this game. á You will never win this game. á This isnÆt a ôwinö game.á There is no level 80.á There is no set of achievements except the ones your set for yourself.á á You arenÆt safe.á Anywhere.á Period.á PvP occurs in stations too.á It is called The Market.á You might not die, but your wallet could easily disappear.á á You fit your ship wrong.á Again.á ThatÆs right, you always will.á ôMy Punisher killed that Rifter!á This is certainly the right fit.á No wait, how did that Coercer kill me?á I need to refitàöá á Check your directional.á á Check your local. á That Maller is a trap. á Warp stabilizers might save you today.á They wonÆt tomorrow, and probably wonÆt ever again. á Inject your skillbook before you leave the station.á Neo didnÆt learn Kung-Fu by having it sit in his usb drive.á á Bookmark everything.á ESPECIALLY when you jump into a wormhole.á This includes where you came into the wormhole.á Because when you are busy scanning and a HAC targets your Arbitrator, you will be in a pod.á And then you will have a really interesting time getting out of WH space. á Keyboards are destructible.á Much more so when used as a projectile. á DonÆt fly it if you canÆt fit it.á That being said, DONÆT FLY IT IF YOU CANÆT FIT IT.á And the same goes for affordability.á á That mentally challenged fellow there in local chat calling you names?á HeÆs not mentally challenged.á Nor is he forgiving when he finds you. á Pods pop easily. á Concord delivers swift justice, especially for your mistakes, like targeting friendly pods and clicking the wrong action. á You can do anything:á Manufacture, explore, trade, pvp, mine, lead a corporation, lead an alliance, wage wars, pirate, transport, be a part of factional warfare, and IÆm sure there is more I am leaving out. You can become virtually rich, and you can lose it all. á A friend of mine that I used to play WoW with asked what is so great about Eve, and why he should leave WoW.á It is such a broad and easy question, I didnÆt know where to start.á But ultimately I told him the most important thing I have learned in this game: á Eve is what you make of it.

Thanks! I was working on my mad PvP skills the other day in RvB, and something just clicked. I'm pretty sure it was audible. With everything I have read and studied up on, nothing beats experience. I was in a failfit Maller getting killed by a Rupture, and suddenly the fog of combat was gone and I could see every mistake I was making. I still lost, but I completely understood why I lost. It was like learning algebra. I struggled all year long, and something happened and it all just made sense. Now my freinds will have to tell me to shut up about Eve even more often now.

There's a few things I might add, but this is all very solid advice. You, sir, deserve a +1 internets for this.

You just leveled up IRL! Do not try to pwn with the ship. You are only pwning yourself. Instead, realise that there is no ship, there is only you, pwning. |

Edited by: Alejandro DeTaz on 08/03/2010 20:53:19 So what you're saying is that the Eve universe is as harsh and unforgiving as real life. Noted.
Edit: Actually it isn't.

Well thanks! I shall call you Vince. I'm sorry about Billy Mayes, but he had it coming.
All the positive posts were more than I expected! My internets are full of internets now! I have always wanted to start a blog about Eve, perhaps I should do so. There are so many WTF moments there is no way to cram them all into a forum post. I think most of us would probably have a book full of them by now, like getting ECM'd for the first time, seeing a frozen corpse for the first time, etc. Any one else have any good tips/WTF's/FFFUUUU's?

This post was chock full of great advice. Although I already include a lot of player observations in my "briefing" to new pilots from the press, this last bit is always the cornerstone of it all. Good to see it in one place. I'm definitely going to pass this on.
