What I was wondering though, what is the long term value of my training. At the moment I'm going heavy into upgrading shield and missile skills and I would be a bit sad that this turns out to be wasted time when I come further in game.
As a path I see, that until I reach some solid skills (and earn a bit more isk) I will keep flying my drake and eventually swap to a raven missile boat, which also relies on shield tanking.
Is shield tanking good for long term? What is a natural to fly as upgrade to raven? I hope I'm right but I'm under the impression the a lot of the skills I learn to help me with my drake also help make a good raven fit. At the moment I am mostly running missions, is shieldtanking done in pvp?
Stop worrying about your "future". Shield and armor tanks are fine later on, missiles and guns are fine later on.
What will likely happen is the following: you will get tired of sitting there lobbing missiles at NPCs all day long and will want to fly something else. Or you'll want to fly a Mega b/c it looks like a Transformer/Macross/Voltron Guess what? You can! Having shield and missile skills is not going to prevent you from training armor and gunnery skills.
Remember, key to happy life is variety and moderation.
This. Contrary to popular belief, every race has an abundance of ships that excel in both pvp and pve. If you're like me and have a tendency to train for something new every week, you'll eventually come to realize this yourself. I had great skills for both amarr and minmatar before they became FOTM, and I've about a week of leadership skills left before I focus on training caldari (finished torps 5 last week though, because stealth bombers are awesome, ESPECIALLY if you're caldari since the manti's the only one that'll be fitting 2 ewar mods, 2 damage mods, a MWD AND a MSE :D ).
Wanna know why I'm training caldari ships next? Because I saw what they were planning on doing to the scorpion :P The reason most people whine about such and such race being subpar is that every race has shipclasses with which it sucks. For caldari this means that your HACs are going to suck (though the cerb is very good at driving off smaller ships) and that in large RR gangs you're going to struggle (most large RR gangs armor tank). However you've got the best BC and force recon by a wide margin (and given that BCs are the best bang-for-your-buck pvp ships out there right now, that's not so bad)
The best advice I can offer though is don't train up for a race, train up for a ship. I trained autocannons to fly the sleipnir, and lasers to fly the zealot. I trained torps to fly the manti and drones to fly the domi etc. And I've never regretted it, it lets me drastically change how I play the game on a whim, and keeps me from getting bored :) |
