I used to have a 10GB/month contract with T-Mobile mobile broadband. The OP is completely right. The service is terrible. It's advertised "up to 4.5Mb/s", but I have not found a single spot anywhere in the country where I can get more than 384kb/s. Less than 1/10 of the advertised speed. There's probably a single mobile phone tower in Aberdeenshire or something which allows you to get 4.5Mb/s if you're sitting on top of it.
Now I just use the dongle with my PAYG simcard from time to time if I ever need web access. Turns out, they stop charging you after the first ú1 of the day, even on PAYG. So it is at least convenient, even if it's not a very good service. ____________________

I myself use T-mobile mobile broadband and i agree that some parts of it suck ie the ban on any voip use unless you upgrade, which they dont tell you about when you get the thing.
however bandwidth wise i have no problems running 3 accounts on it

I live in socialist Canada and our regulated monopoly (Shaw owns west, Rogers east (notrly)) cable and internet mind you, not cellphone/wireless/Telus (loldialup) works out pretty well. I get a purchased modem discount for $5, (modem was $100~), but as a valued customer I get free upgrades/trade-ins on modems, and if you ever did go over your limit, Shaw phones you and tells you to stop being a bandwidth *****. Cheapest internet package is $20~ and gives you a 10g limit, the one I use (3rd best) costs $50~ and gives 100g limit.
Shaw is a great ISP unlike the failspawn that infect capitalist countries.

Considering you said "Mb/s" I assumed you where talking about megabits. I also have a hard time believing you are getting 4.5 megaBYTEs wirelessly. Thats not even common for a land line. Also, sorry if you got offended by me pointing out where you were wrong.
Actually, I'm not.

Try again. I think you'll find 384kb/s is less than a tenth of 4.5Mb/s. Please note the use of lowercase b in both quantities.

384kbytes/sec is however, roughly how much you should be expected from a 4.5mbit/sec line. He's probably assuming you are meaning 384kbytes instead of 384kbits. _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

The local plebian populace likes to talk about how they can get a "twenty megabyte" connection from Virgin Media.
I have long since stopped trying to teach them basic arithmetic and technological terminology.
Oh dispair :(

A lot of North American ISPs are crooked. I read an article a few months ago where the big names were attempting to get the term "broadband" to apply to 100kB/s or something similarly insane. If you compare the average connection speed of North America to, say Europe, and it isn't even close.

I use T-mobile in the UK, here they do have the same "fair use policy" as everyone else, but not only is it 3GB a month where others can be much less, they are the only people who only moan at you for going over, upsell, and can drop you to 2g if you go over, instead of charging you a fortune without warning you that you are going over the limit. I was stung for a ú200 bill when I went over my limit with Vodafone, and that was just browsing internet. I saw red and switched providers when Choad-a-fone decided to renew their mobile internet policy so that the most they would let me have is 300mb a month...
