With two characters, you can get a Hulk and Orca pair that will generate less ore per hour than two hulks together. The benefit of having an orca is that you spend less time warping to station and back to the belt, so the mining operation requires fewer mouse clicks (and less attention overall). Using an Orca you also reduce the possibility of canflipping to zero since you are not using a can.
Just walk past the computer every few minutes to move ore into the Orca's corporate hangars, and remember to set your hulk up with a decent tank in order to deter gankers. Ideally you'd mine in mission-space to reduce the probability of getting ganked.
If you're prepared to be sitting at the computer supervising the operation, two Hulks will be better than one Hulk plus an Orca. But in that scenario you are probably better off running missions with a fleet of two ships.
Once you get three characters, you'll find that two Hulks + Orca is more productive simply due to the Orca saving you from having to warp back and forth to empty cargo holds.

If in a spot safe from can flippers 2 hulks are better cause can mine into cans and use orca to haul every 30 mins or hour otherwise imho orca + hulk is better cause don't need to dock every 2 cycles so going 3 min cycle 2 cycles 2 fill cargo -yield of not fitting for max amount mined I feel orca+hulk is better but is more of a personal opinion doing math 2 hulks is a bit better but have to dock often and is a pain

Seconded.
I use 2x Mackinaw though because ice harvesting is just so slow.
I do 2x Hulk in w-space for safety reasons. My alt is moving into a Rorqual soon (waiting for it to be built) so it won't have to hide like the Orca must (C2, and we have a carrier).

even with 2 accounts i would go hulk + orca instead of hulk+hulk, warping back and forth with 2 hulk is very painful :P, and jetcanning is stressful :)
for a 2 accounts scenario i would go from Hauler + Hulk to Orca + Hulk.

Assuming that both characters have good hulk skills and that one of them also have good leadership (mining foreman and such) so that he can actually drive the Orca.
Two Hulks would get c:a 1700m3/m each, so c:a 3400m3/m together (this includes the leadership bonuses from one of them).
One Orca boosted Hulk would get c:a 2050m3/m.
But while that 3400m3/m looks nice, it does create some issues.
Either warp back and unload every 5-6 minutes, or jetcan (one can every 8 minutes like ...).
Compare to a skilled, rigged and expanded Orca that holds 179.000m3 (with Indy Cmd IV) needing to be emptied every 87:th minute.
So while the Hulk duo is bringing home more iskies, it's a lot more work and risk involved.

Edited by: Cicily Rainweather on 16/03/2010 14:39:49 My Alt just got her Orca.. She's currently training for the gang-links.
In my research, I haven't seen anything that says the Shield Harmonizer gang-link does anything to boost yield or lower duration or.. anything benefitial to the act of mining. If I've missed something, please let me know...
My alt pairs her Orca with 1 Hulk. Travel time, and docking time. With 2 Hulks, they're traveling to the station, docking, traveling back. While they're doing this, their strip miners aren't mining... and if their not mining, they're not making ISK. Also, while they're actually docked or exiting the station, any mining boosters are no longer in effect, also cutting into yield rates.
If using Hulks, one way to minimize travel time is to rig the hulks for maximum cargo capacity. But you're then sacrificing MLUs in the low slots, and hence cutting your yield rate.
The Hulk/Orca combination is super handy in systems that don't have stations. You can then stay in an asteroid belt longer and continue to mine. If you think travel time cuts into profits when the station is in the same system.. it REALLY cuts profits when you have to travel through a gate.
Remember. the only time you're making money when mining is when the lasers/strippers are actually banging away at the asteroids. All other activity is overhead. |

I have one character Hulk/Orca and another Hulk/Freighter. It works out because one ships ore off the belt and the other ships it to jita.
