As many of you know, I have no qualms with scams and scamming.
However, botting/macroing is an entirely different matter, and that is what this post is all about.
For more than a month now one Burnie Madoff has been using an army of a few alts (such as Fresh Minerals permanently parked in Jita) to spam his "missing numbers" scam contracts in local. He is spamming these contracts in at least 4 hub systems, and is doing this 23/7. His spammer characters have autoreject on, of course. Burnie himself is known to be online at times, and does answer to convo requests (though I never had an "honor" to talk to him).
Of course, spamming 23/7, on at least FOUR separate accounts is physically impossible, especially since one cannot copy-paste links to contracts. Burnie's alts spam links, and do it very, very efficiently. Thus, Burnie is using a macro to do the spamming. And he is no better than our Veldspar-mining friend hgjhskahsk in the nearest asteroid belt.
If you see any of Burnie's contracts being spammed in local, make sure to petition both Burnie Madoff and his respective alt PROMPTLY. While it might be technically challenging to prove the macro use (though it is OBVIOUS he is BOTTING), once he accumulates enough gags, we will be rid of him forever. And I would say, good riddance.
Why do I care about Burnie?
- he makes local channels even less intelligible
- he is not smart enough to understand that "missing numbers" contracts will be bought out even without spamming them
- he creates a bad rep for all professional scammers, equating us with EULA-breaking cheaters just like himself
- so far he has been getting away with something nobody else in EVE is getting away with
If you want to help the effort, join the "Petition Burnie Madoff" channel in-game.
But most imporatntly, let the GMs know! Together we can rid EVE of this guy, and make Jita (and Dodixie) just a tiny bit more tolerable.

TL;DR -> Burnie Madoff Appreciation Thread.
Seriously, you guys just have to black all his alts and you're done.
I, for one, couldn't care less about people spamming in local. Besides, do you have any proof (read PROOF or PROOOOOOOOOOF ) that he's actually using macros? Ofcourse you don't :|

For proof just visit Jita local and see characters spamming contracts there well beyond time that they have been completed. Wonder why they do this? It is because they are running a spam macro. Macro is stupid and will keep spamming same contract over and over again even after it has been completed.
Players use macros to make ISK from mining. There are also macros advertised on certain sites for trading and ratting. It is not a wild possibility that someone would use a macro for spamming scam contracts only to come back home and find themselves a few hundred mil richer. It does not matter what they are using a macro for. What matters is that they are breaking the rules to get ahead of you in game.

First off, I would like to clear up some false notions about me, and my being. Let's get one thing straight....I am NOT a bot, macro, or any other sort of thing. Check your logs, and check my posts. Because I am persistent may make me annoying, but it does not make me a bot. Second, you are not the first "genius" to figure out I have multiple account spamming at the same time in multiple systems. Nor are you the first to post an idiotic post in C&P crying like a carebear to "Join together and rid ourselves of Burnie!" I haven't been banned because I am not a Macro.
This is probably more than I should say, but on a side note, I am a disabled veteran of the United States Marine Corps. I cant do much anymore, but what I can do is sit around while talking to my family and post a contract with a little text after it, then alt tab and do the same thing again. It isn't rocket science, and it doesn't require a macro or a bot. Maybe something better than the POS computer your parents bought you.
Back on topic now.
In my honest assessment of the situation, I think I either scammed your alt, or you are jealous. Now lets be honest here....I have been selling contracts since May of last year, and I have made over 40 billion doing so-about 30 of which was on this guy. What have you been doing? Oh I know---you have been crying like a carebear, making stupid posts, and bothering GM's with frivolous petitions. And to all you who sit and laugh and call me a "fail scammer" (Yes I do read it, I just choose not to respond) I suppose you have never really seen my contract history. And yes, I have posted contracts a few hours after they were accepted. The person I advertise with, and the person I post the contracts with are different. Therefore, sometimes I don't notice right away a contract has sold. This is my fault, and yes, I could see how it looks bad. But then again. I really don't care what you think. CCP wont take action unless I spam too much, because I am NOT a bot, and I have EVERY right to post there just as you do. Cry moar.
lastly, I want to end by affirming I am not going anywhere....Oh I take breaks now and then.....spamming does get REALLY old. Kinda like level 4s and asteroids for you carebears do. Report me, cry in local, make stupid posts, do whatever you want. However If you wanna talk to me, maybe try making me laugh instead of boring me your stupidity. (i.e. "OMG gais, he is scamming" "You forgot a zero bulk" "NO ONE is that stupid mining" "OMG gais, hes a bot, hurry report it")
Have fun, fly safe, and if you need any good deals on some minerals, I am the man to see. I also have a few PLEX I need to get rid of, though I only sell them in quantities of two.....

You can't ask someone to prove they aren't a macro something or other... Burden of proof is on everyone who has made the accusation.
I don't know if it's the same guy or not, but there's one in Amarr local all day, every day, named "Mining Minerals" spamming the same contracts 23/7, 500,000 Zydrine (which is really 50,000) and 2 PLEX for 510mil, but there's really only 1 PLEX.
If this is the same guy, I too think he's using Macros, because I highly doubt that anybody would sit at a computer 23/7, ALT TABBING 4 accounts, typing the same thing all day long for god knows how many months. I don't care if you're a retired veteran with both legs blown off, disabled, whatever, nobody would do that.
HOWEVER, he's been doing it a hell of a long time, and despite all these petitions and reportings, has not been banned, so maybe you're all wrong.

Yes it is the same guy. The fact that petitions don't get answered does not mean that he is not using a macro. Many players posted here that they reported a mining or courier macro and CCP did nothing about them. I would not be surprised if they don't look into petitions about trading/spamming macroes either.

Edited by: Creepy Goat on 14/03/2010 14:12:06 I swear everyone who has ever been ridiculed in EvE is a disabled army veteran.
I once asked some guy about his failfailfail fitted faction battleships and T3s, and his response was I AM DISABLED ARMY VETERAN STFU.
Deepest sympathies to those who ARE actually disabled veterans, however the majority that actually play Eve are not going to shout about it at every given oppurtunity.

Basically, THIS. QFT twice for extra impact.
THIS is why he should be petitioned, and THIS is why CCP should wake up, and this is why we should petition this guy.
In your petitions, please do not hesitate to ask a GM if it is OK for you to use a simple macro to do exactly what Burnie does. Such as a macro for a Logitech G15 keyboard, for instance. If it is OK to use such macros, then I will set up a few tomorrow, and I will do it better than Burnie (because I have been scamming people for a longer time).
Otherwise, let's keep up the good work! PETITION!
I am not going to argue with the demagogues in this thread, including Burnie himself. Yes, he is running a macro. Yes, he is going to be vehemently denying it (duh, captain Obvious). He might even (gasp!) alt-post. No, CCP cannot detect keystroke macros programmatically. However, he is still breaking the rules on overspamming the public channels, and he WILL get a temporary gag every time he is petitioned. If he is petitioned enough, he will be removed from our game.
It seems like the spamming intensity has somewhat abated since I have started my campaign.
Don't like it, Burnie? Then play the game like the rest of us. Without macros.

Yep, and it happens quite often.
I have also analyzed the local logs from all four mission hubs, and the timing of the spam is quite regular. Suspiciously so. It looks like the macro is working as a round-robin, spamming a hub a few times in a row, then moving to the next one.
Any human spamming that much, that regularly, 23/7 would surely get a RSI.
Unless, of course, it is not a human, but a simple macro that cannot pass a Turing test. Which Burnie's macros clearly cannot.

No, you have not yet been banned for three main reasons.
- It is hard (or plain impossible) for CCP to detect keyboard macros. Unlike Blizzard, they do not have their Warden.
- You have not accumulated enough GM gags for overspamming to deserve a ban on these grounds.
- People in trade hubs will mostly just block your spambots, since petitioning takes 50x times the keyboard presses.
While I cannot fix the problem #1, I will fix the #2 and #3. No amount of demagogy will stop this process.

Burnie, it is really funny how you make posts without doing even a little bit of eve-searching before.
No, you have not scammed my alt, and no, I cannot possibly be jealous of the WHOLE 40 BILLION you made since May.* Also, I am not out to get you for your missing zero contracts. Make as many as you like - godspeed.
What I, and most thinking posters, like Siig and Chribba, find unacceptable is your use of macros for spamming. The demagogy you use in justifying this is not helping either.
*40 billion in 9 months works out to ~4.4 bil/month. That is pretty low on the scale of "white-collar" incomes in EVE, and is about what I would expect from running an incompetent missing-zeros operation. More ISK can be made even on legitimate loot resale, and it can be done completely AFK, too. My own scamming operations bring significantly more profit - however, I cannot possibly automate corp theft and some of the more creative contract scams with a keyboard macro. Burnie's main achievement here is, of course, his sheer impudence, because he has (rightfully) realized that a keyboard macro is virtually undetectable.

Because I'm a veteran (not disabled) and every single disabled vet with whom I am personally acquainted (which is quite a few, thanks to modern events) would NEVER, EVER, EVER bring that up on an internet forum. Never. Not even once. End of story.
The reason for this is because they refuse to let their disability define them. They have too much pride.
Furthermore, they sure as hell wouldn't use it as a justification for running scams in an online game.
If this rat b-tard wants to make his ISK running contract scams then that's fine. What is not fine is the continual flood of spam that fills up the local channels in trade hubs. The solution to this is really, really simple: report him as an ISK spammer. Not only will it get CCP looking at his account, but it will block him and remove the text from your chat log.

Makes sense.
Can you imagine somebody signing up for the army to defend one's own country, getting wounded in a conflict, coming back home as a disabled veteran, then deciding to scam people in an MMO game?

I agree fully. He is not a disabled veteran, and even if he was, that was a shameless and meaningless effort to curry public support in a completely unrelated venue. The two factors are totally unrelated.
Hey everyone, I'm a veteran of the Great Space War of 2341. I traveled back in time, but the trauma I suffered when that ion cannon took off my arm was such that now I need to scam people in a video game. You also need to pity me.

the way i see it, it IS annoying to go to a trade hub and be bamboozled with scams, but on the other side of the coin, its nothing new. flooding local in my opinion is part of the game as im sure the OP is aware, and providing the guy is sitting at his computer, i don't really mind the macros i mean if he is playing the game its really just a limitation to have to type it out 1000x a day, and if we did stop him he would just use a notepad and copy and paste, links can be typed i think?
anywho either way he is doing it, i would just mute him. i contacted his "alts" a couple times (ones i suspect etc) and he spoke to me, a nice loan process that i imagine is quite hard biting for those that take it, but i mean he was physically at the computer so its not really all that bad
technically he is breaking EULA, but in such a way that doesn't really effect game play of other players just mute him and move on, end of the day hes not letting it play for him hes just letting it paste what he wants pasted =]
secondly if they really are all his alts, my GOD he must have a good system :D i can handle two at ones but damn,
anyway, im not a maduff lover, nor am i siding with the OP just wanted to mention the severity of this macro is so not worth the ban, maybe a mute, or a CCP backed request to stop the PLEX scam but i honestly find that funny :D
how irritated would you be if you bought that one ><
anywho have fun all ^^

aside from that detail the contract scamming spam is legitimate use of game mechanics and unless its "disruptive" or "excessive" he can continue to do it all day.

oh, and welcome to EvE, you must not have been here long enough if you're whinging about contract scams.
GTC scamming is indeed bannable.
PLEX scamming is entirely legal, as PLEXes are considered to be in-game items.
More to the point: the thread is NOT about scams or scamming. This thread is about Burnie Madoff using macro/script/chatbot to link contracts in Local channels. This gives him an unfair advantage over other players, who refrain from using macros/chatbots*. It does not matter if the contracts he is linking are "legitimate" or "scams". The point of the discussion is that he is using a macro.
The thread presents convincing testimony to this fact, coming from some of the most well-known and trusted players in EVE, such as Chribba and Siigari. Burnie's alts are online 23/7, spamming incessantly. Sometimes finished scams are being spammed for hours. The time intervals between posts are extremely regular, and contracts are linked in a fixed order. To give you an idea of what I am talking about, here's a dump of Rens Local, courtesy of Menod Penter(c): Linkage. This dump was linked in another thread about Burnie's spambots.
Using macros is against the EULA, period (and rightfully so).
____________________________________________________________
Now, how to deal with the problem in hand.
1. Collect the evidence. Have a trade or scamming alt parked in Jita, Amarr, Dixie? Upload Local dump to pastebin or eve-files. Post the link here, or in the Burnie thread on C&P, and specify your timezone. If you feel like it, use Excel or your favorite text editor to count the number of Burnie's posts, and analyze the spacing between posts.
2. PETITION CCP. Use either the "Exploit" or "EULA" category. DO NOT mention "scams" or "spam" in the body of your petition. These things are not petitionable as such, nor should they be. Instead, specifically refer to "chatbot", "macro", "script", or "bot" use. Link this thread, and one on C&P. If you have evidence (Local dumps), or statistical analysis of macroage, link that as well. Also helpful is to request a yes-or-no answer on the legality of the use of macros.
Join the "Petition Burnie Madoff" channel in-game if you wish to coordinate your efforts, or if you have further questions!
Signed, the (self-proclaimed) queen of contract scams, Elora Narst ____________________________________________________________________
*As many of you know, I am a professional career scammer (contracts/corp theft). I want to throw in some interesting numbers here. My own actuarial tables show that linking a feeble "extra-zeros" scam, just like the ones Burnie is running, in local can increase the probability of it working by up to 2.70% for any given hour spammed. While this looks like a small number, it is cumulative. It means all the difference between selling 2-3 500-million scams a week (with 23/7 spamming), and selling one every two months (with no exposure).

Actually.....GTC/plex is considered as any other type of in-game item and therefore is succeptable to all the same rules as any other item.....so yes you can scam them....I had even spoken to a GM about it and if it saves, still have the log with the GM to show that (was about 4 months ago)
The moment you turn a GTC into a plex.....it loses any form of protection it would have had....such as a GTC being hacked from your computer or something *shrug* can't think of any way the code would have made it in game
that's why you DO see so many of these contracts in Jita and what not. They do work. The one that got me when I was trying to sell a PLEX was the "Change the value" of the ISK.....i was trying to sell a plex for 280m and a user had it in there....he hit accept.....so i went to go hit accept and he changed the value and i was mid mouse click and couldn't catch it in time....GM told me it was an in-game item and used game mechanics to do it so it was fine.
Although I would have argued that that is an exploit of the system.....most MMO's you can't change once you hit the accept button without dropping completly out of the trade window. So I learned and now any time I have a plex i intend to sell....i do it through contracts.....although it is hard to do thanks to the ammount of contract scams that are out there. -------------- (Insert whatever you want here) |

Ouch, that's a pretty fail trade system if the other party can change his side of the deal after you've hit accept.
Contract scams seem fine though, its nice and clear what items are actually being sold in the window at the bottom, which is much larger than the false info description at the top. And if you're clicking Accept on multi-million ISK contracts without taking the time to read them, so be it.

PLEX sell on normal market, 0 reason to ever use direct trade or contracts for them, unless you're greedy... which makes you the perfect scam victim. Cause pretty much all scams work because of greed or stupidity but mostly greed.

People like this are easy to spot by anyone, including GMs, and should just be muted or banned.
Most people don't fall for 10000 (really 1000) veldspar for whatever price but some will and this will fuel the fire that macro-spamming a scam = free ISK.
Like the OP I enjoy the fact that scams are legal in EVE (muhahahaha ) but this is not somebody playing a scam in the game, it is a potential to open up another WRT hole.

There's an old saying. "If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands."
Now I'm not saying anyone is anything, but spamming multiple local chats with multiple alts on predictable intervals for 23 hours a day 7 days a week and not noticing things like the spammed contract has sold does start to raise questions. As does being a "disabled veteran" who spends his time doing nothing but scamming with no desire to interact with Eve's player base in any other way. Also doing so without the time for things like sleep, food, or a bathroom does make me concerned for Burnie's well being. Most scammers are like tourist traps, the locals know what's going on and don't care, but the visitors go "Ooh, Zydrine!".

isn't it?? i was mad for 10 minutes....but live and learn. I have the guy on my people and places and will pod him one day lol....
I agree....i like the idea scams and what not are legal....as long as it's in-game methods...i personally thing the trade window thing was in fact an exploit...I remember OLD Ultima Online (around the second age era for those familiar) you could do scamming in there....the true black dye tubs were pretty big...if you had one, you could dye balls of yarn (4) and take a normal dye tub and position them in the trade window like such....you didn't check the items and just looked...you just fell for a few mill scam. But once you hit accept (either party) the only way you could change the terms was to start a new trade window.
I loved scamming in UO....I was good at it....but I also played for 4 years. haven't really tried in EVE and I don't know if i could really scam someone out of a plex. other things....maybe one day but not yet.
Actually the comparisons i have to Early UO is the reason I decided i liked EVE....i read about Ebank and the Guiding hand social club incidents and then did a trial and got suicide ganked....after that badger of mine died....i was hooked lol -------------- (Insert whatever you want here) |
