I am planning to dedicate about 1,5-2 months to train up all the possible basic skills like mechanics, electronics, energy management etc to V and some to IV. During this time I want to decide what I want to fly.
Note that I will mostly PvE, but will PvP from time to time aswell.
I am gallente, but I have very little investment in race specific ships so I could switch to amarr(don't like the other 2 races). It seems to me that the avarage ship people fly is a BS. Seems good for running missions, but somehow I want to try something more fancy Training for a command ship takes a LOT of time compared to a BS so I am thinking what is the advantage ? Obviously gang assist modules are nice, but what can it do solo ? Can someone give me a brief description what is it good at ? Is it even worth the long training path ? What is the advantage of Amarr vs Gallente ? Since I plan to PvP aswell the Cruiser/Battlecruiser V skill that I will get along the way will be useful too.
TL;DR Considering training for Command Ship. Is it worth it over a BS and is Amarr better the Gallente. Mostly PvE

In your particular case, probably better just stick with battleships.
The advantages of command ships over battleships are better specific tanks (depending on race), increased speed and agility (T2 BC instead of BS), more precise weapon systems (med instead of large) and last but not least the ability to use gang mods. The disadvantages are the hefty pricetag, lower overall tank (although exceptions exist depending on specific fit), lower DPS output (even for the field command versions, the other ones are outDPSed by regular battlecruisers so there's no contest) and last but not least the insane skill prerequisites (it's not much harder to go directly for marauders instead).

You've said nothing about Solo vs. Group play.
Command Ships are designed for those who are commanding fleets ... If you're doing that ... then they make sense ... if not they make no sense that I'm aware of.
*shrug*
Certain ships have been designed for specific tasks. It doesn't mean you can't use them for something else but - that something else isn't what they were designed for so you might well be better off using something that was designed for that ... something else.

commandships use medium sized weapons. Except for Nighthawk you get a much lower range with your weapons ------ Make Lowsec useful! Vote in the CSM-Forum! |

Command Ship pilot checking in here...
Most of the basics were covered in the posts above me, and I agree that you should PROBABLY stick with battleships for your missioning, and especially for your PvP.
But if you're really set on command ships, there are some options. Your chosen races are a mixed bag though. The gallente command ships are just quite BAD. The Eos has a bonus to the least-used command links, and it itself, while capable of fitting a monster tank, has the problem of most fleet command ships in that it can't DPS itself out of a wet paper bag. Their field command ship, the astarte, is designed to be a blaster boat. In that role, ofcourse, it does AMAZING DPS, at a range so low it's next to useless. trust me on this one, I've tried. Some people have decent experiences with rail-fitted astartes, but I'd rather bring a myrmidon instead for nearly anything.
The amarr CSes are pretty good. The damnation is probably the most used fleet command ship in the game, its bonusses for armor command links making it useful in a RR BS gang. The ship itself has a monstrous tank (on mine, the lowest armor resist is at 89%, and I'm not using THAT much pimp gear...) but only a couiple of unbonussed missile launchers for DPS. Since you probably won't have much in the way of missile skills, well, you get the picture... Not really a solo ship. The absolution, their field CS, has a useful tank bonus, laser cap and double damage bonus, which makes it a pretty NASTY boat... But it's hard fit both a decent tank and decent DPS. Still, I'd say it's probably your best bet. (I haven't flown that one myself, yet, since my lazor skills used to be nonexistent. I'm working on 'em now, and should I have the spare ISK at the time, I'm sure to give the abso a try once I'm up to t2 mediums.) I did command ships 5 on an alt... what a bloody waste. far better off flying an unscannable t3, and sitting in a safe or at a pos. you want to boost the fleet and not get shot at, not be there commanding them.
battle cruisers 5 is a pretty awesome skill though. glad I have that one.
go for battleships (yay in 25d1h33m I'll have all bs 5 (over 2 chars))

if you are looking for an alternative to battleship for pve you might wanna look at HACs instead of command ships, most notably the ishtar is a very nice alternative to battleship since you are gallente anyway.
you can fit a pretty nasty tank on there, plus its drone dps is the same as a dominix, overal dps is a bit lower offcourse, but its easier to train for too.

Many very good advices already given!
For soloing gallente CS are a piece of s***. Go Dominix. And even if you want to fly something "fancy" than go and train marauders, and find out that the kronos canŠt do anything better than the domi, beside of salvaging while pew pew.
Go HAC (Ishkur) or T3 (Proteus).

Edited by: helpnuout on 24/03/2010 19:25:42 In short...do not train for CS. Amarr vs. Gallente, each has strengths and weakness, but I think the Gallente is more versatile with the Domi for the missions and Mega for fleet battles in 0.0.
More detail....
All pretty good advice so far in the thread. I have tried the astarte in a mission role and found it to really lack. It has been said that it sucks and I can agree with that. I lost it in a pvp fight and have not and will not replace it. My Kronos is nice...looks nice as it sits in my hangar for months at a time between uses. Granted, I do not run a lot of missions atm, but when I was running them, it made easy work of almost any mission. However, nothing that my Dominix didn't do and since I have an alt salvager...well, if you want one, I can sell ya one.
In 0.0 I rat and plex in an Ishtar. HAC, HIC, and BC is by far the most used boats that I have aside from the fleet BS. I would recommend that you train up the cruiser 5 skill on your Gallente (and amarr if you want flexibility) and then BC 5 and then finally BS 5. You said you had a few months right :)
