To research with an R&D agent does your level in the datascore-specific skill need to match the agent's?
I thought so, but a level 2 agent let me start the research with only level 1 in the skill. Is that how it's supposed to work? Will I be able to start using a level 4 without the skill trained to IV? I would test it myself but it's quite a few jumps out. Or should that level 2 not have let me start the research until I had the skill trained to II?

Your skill is only used to determine how many RP/day you earn.

The agent's info just tells you what level the agent has the skill at, not what you need your skill to be at. For reference, the RP/day formula:
( Your_Skill_Lvl + Agent_Skill_Lvl ) ^2 * ( 1 + ( Agent_Effective_Quality / 100 ) )

Based on the answers to the first poster's question, I traveled 30 jumps.
I have none of the relevant skills, but I do have the standings. I can't start research. The agent says, "You don't have the skills to match mine."
Does this mean I have to train the skills to level 1?

You must have the science skill related to the field of research that you wish your agent to pursue, and that agent must be skilled in that field too.

Great I started research with the level 4 
There is a lot of wrong information about this though  . The reason I thought it worked like this was because it said so in a few of the R&D guides I read, the agent themselves say "You need the skills to match mine" and Googling turns up many forum posts of people saying you need the skill trained to the same level as the agent. Ah well, glad I got that cleared up.
