Hm, well, I obviously do it, but I need to do this poll for a project I'm working on.
So basically, why is the monthly cost worth it, when you can just buy a game one time and have infinite multiplayer time in certain other games?
Long and serious answers are appreciated! |

1. The cost is really insignificant if you got a job, where I live its like the price of two beers in the town (I like measuring things in number of beers).
2. Its a deep complex game where you make your own challenges and can play based on your own ideas.
3. Its a social platform.
4. Its better entertainment then ****ty TV and rubbish new movies, and i rahter spend a few hours blowing up random chumps then watch some ****ty reality TV :).
5. Singleplayer games got no PVP elements and thus suck after 1 or 2 playthroughs.
6. Multiplayer games got more replayability as long as it offer varied gamepleay but is in the end static and repetetive. EVE is slightly better here due to openend gameplay, and being just big.
7. Why not?
8. I got nothing better to do.
Should cover most of it.

It's worth paying for an entire year after your first month, because: a) it's much cheaper to pay for one whole year than on a per-month basis... and by the end of your first 30 "paid" days (which normally should have been 51 almost completely free days total if you were smart about it and had somebody else send you an invite plus a PLEX in exchange for some ISK later on) you should already know if you want to keep playing it b) it sucks less than any of the currently available alternatives (seriously, name ONE other alternative that even could hold your interest that long without having to actually buy expansion packs or whatnot) c) you can easily end up (eventually, or in case you did pay for a whole year, almost certainly at the end of that year) paying in ISK instead of RL-cash (which appeals to either people that can't make more money in RL and are cash-strapped, and for people that have too much ISK for some reason) d) it's spaceshipsspace submarines and shooting people in the facehull, do you really need other excuses ?

As far as hobbies go, $15.00 a month is fairly cheap. When I go play a round of golf, it easily cost's $35-$50 per round. Out for a night of bowling, it's easy to drop another $50 (counting beverages).
If you play EVE enough, you actually don't have to pay for it with real money as you can buy PLEX or GTC so there is that aspect as well.
During the winter months, when I am unable to persue other hobbies, EVE is a great alternative. As someone previously mentioned, it is a social site as well. One of my ex corp mates came to my wedding, and helped my wife and I move. My wife plays as well (and she is way more addicted to it than I am as she works from home and can multitask).
Single player games are fun, but eventually you run out of content. Although at times they can be fun to go back to and cleanse the pallete, they become tedious very quickly. If I was to compare EVE to buying an endless stream of single player console based games, over the long term you actually save money by playing EVE. |

Eve is interactive, and changes often enough so that the thrill is not gone.
Television is passive, and if I see any more right-wing fear-and-hate-mongering propaganda ads with their blatant lies and dumbed-down simplistic cliche's pandering to the uneducated, bigoted, and ignorant I think I'll put a brick through my telly.
Since that will put a stop to my wife's watching Oprah and lawyer/medical dramas, I would never hear the end of it, so to keep peace $.50 a day U.S. is a bargain.
That said, FPS is penny arcade mentality, WOW is Saturday morning cartoons, and I grew up on science fiction and I've found a home in Eve. |

You know, I was going to troll you, but instead I'll be serious for once. 15 bucks per month is better than 60 bucks for a game that you finish within 2 weeks? That's only if you feel like playing Eve is worth your time, of course.
But. Does anyone want to play Starcraft with me? |

Part of of the fee is down to cost. CCP are constantly developing, supporting and hosting the game and therefore there are staff, equipment and other costs that need to be paid. In a boxed game, once it's out the door the overheads a significantly lower. In order to cover the costs an ongoing subscription in required. In a single-payment model, CCP would need to sell more and more copies of the game in order just to stay afloat.
Obviously the benefit of the above is that we, the players, get the benefit of on-going features and development of the game. There is always something new around the corner or a slightly different way of doing things.
I think that even some heavily multiplayer games might start adding a subscription cost to playing them online. I know that if you have an X-Box, say, then you need to pay an annual sub to X-Box live in order to play multilayer games. The bottom line is: if the game is popular; the players will pay.
So, why is it worth it? That depends on the individual player. Some people will find it 'worth it' because they gain an exciting social experience. Other players will like the spinney ships and cool explosions. Some people like that fact that there are always new features and the game is ever-evolving. Other players may like the sweet taste of carebear tears or blowing **** up. Some players probably just play so they can meander around hi-sec in a giant ship, hoovering up veldspar whilst they sit back in a giant purple couch with red and yellow fluorescent lights behind their head .

I wish the game did cost 15 dollars US, but sadly it's more like 15 pound sterling once it's converted from Euro's.
If we could pay in dollars it would be more like ten pound.

I look at other activities I do in the evening;
Night in the pub ú30 Night out at weekend ú60 to ú150 Meal out for two ú60 to ú200 Film at the cinema ú20
Essentially, I get probably 10 to 20 hrs enjoyment a week for the fraction of most other activities cost in a night.
Other multiplayer games are fun, I play COD4 and now Battlefield Bad Company but they never hold my attention for as long as sub based MMOs. |

for me, it was really two reasons that kept me going after the trial.
first, simply put, i quite like the feel of eve...its aesthetics appeal to me, and are only becoming more appealing as time goes on as the graphics improve.
the second and more important reason is the folks i fly with. i got inducted into my original corp about 5 days into my trial, and found a place with people trying to make their mark, we were the little guys, scratching a living at the limits of amarrian trans-sec, sneaking in and out of low sec systems to mine and battle the odd pirate we thought we might be able to gank. at the time we had to scatter if a single dictor entered system cos we we couldnt afford to lose the cruisers we were in like that dictor pilot could afford to lose his dictor.
as time went on we grew a bit, moved into venal and found 0.0 to our liking...we joined a drone regions alliance, then another, then we were evicted by the russians (RED, SOLAR ka-tet etc). hell i was even caod famous for an hour or so at this point, for telling the leader of DMC to stfu with smacking the russians in local
we wended our way down to fountain, and watched bruce die at the hands of PL whilst we joined another alliance, and ganked the odd BoB ship we could in delve whilst trying to find a place in fountain we could hold, eventually we went back north and got knocked around by goons when smashkill was crushed...then we held the line with the NC as all the strength BoB could level against us was unleashed, whilst around us supposed NC powers like pure and hydra collapsed under the strain. now our alliance has merged into a corp and we are NC.
basically its a story; this internet (and fugly) space pilot im playing eve as has a pretty decent history to her, one im fond of and am comfortable with continuing the development of...hell i might even write a memoir for maya ibuki2 one day, and post it on FFN.net or something
it, this sense of history with the people i fly with, and of communal effort with either achievment or genuine loss and upheaval at the end of the road, is something i honestly dont think you can get in any other MMO, certainly none ive tried out. ive made comrades and foe's every step of the way...the only other game i play where stuff even approaching this happens is called RL, and in RL i dont get to choose the powerbloc i join and i dont get to whine about lag |

**** that, I only go on $1 game nights! and then $5 is an expensive night
and I can pay $15/month for eve (or some mmo, I usually either stick around for a few years or quit after the trial), or $60 a month for a new game every month or so. although I do like to pick up some "conventional" games every now and then. Thinking I will pick up Bad Company 2, and/or FFXIII soonish. |

Is it worth it?
Let me put is this way. If they remade the UI successfully and made 2500 vs 2500 fleet fights possible and lagless I'd happily pay 50 golden hamsters a month per account.
Bonus points if they (somehow) added actual sound to the game.
Note: Not counting ISK discounts of course. |

To my eyes, worthiness is entirely relative. You like it or you donÆt. ThatÆs all.
In my country, $15 gets me 3 packs of cigarettes, a sortie to the movies, a cheap meal at a so-so restaurant, one quarter of a full tank of gas in the car or one small piece of equipment for my other hobby (model railroading).
EVE is quite affordable, really. The fact that I can progress without actually logging in all the time makes it appealing alright. I can log in and play until I get my fill then log out for a days long break and not lose progress per se. When I come back, I get something better to play with! |

Primarily because judging by many references, (most recently This thread) we're helping 'fuel' devs in need. And considering the little amount it is per month, it'd be cruel not to.
There's also that pretty nifty gameplay thing they tacked onto the forums. |

Firstly, it's more fun than other free multiplayer games.
Secondarily, Eve is being constantly improved with "free" expansions, so I have a feeling that the subscription fee is being actively used to make the game better. It makes the fee easier to swallow. |

If you're reasonably good at earning and saving in-game currency, you can renew your subscription with in-game earnings and never have to pay any Ç at all beyond the activation fee and the first couple of months while you build your skills.
Which is nice. |
