-4 ME does very nasty things to the BPC, just check the spreadsheet, or get yourself Eve MEEP and check there. It's bad enough to make many invented BPOs commercially unfeasible as wastage factor skyrockets. With -4 ME you waste 33% of the components. It means it will cost you 30% more to produce the module, and that's compared to 0 ME BPC.

You're not making any sense at all, mate.
If you get all the 'stuff' to make a Vagabond for free - and then you make a Vagabond and sell it for 140M ISK. THATS ALL PROFIT.
Or, maybe you get most of it for free, and have to buy the moon goo - well that means the Vagabond's profit is 140M ISK - cost of the moon goo....PRETTY DARN GOOD.
Best part, is you can undercut all the other suppliers and still get rich. Hell, you can even sell to the buy orders and make a profit. Sell a Vagabond for 70M, and STILL make a nice profit.
I've made several billion ISK this way, so trust me it works.
So your time is value-less, then?

Don't. Most T2 ships sell at a loss if built from invented BPCs.
I know this because I have this little spreadsheet that shows me the profit for all ship-decryptor combinations. Most of it is in the red.
Yeah, I saw what you did there.
Intellect-insulting troll is intellect-insulting, thus it wins, even though it's a given that a half-bright 6 year old should be able to see through this.

I made this for our corp, just put in a part of the name in the search box, select invention (and BYOC if you build the t2 components yourself). You can even change the pricing, but i think that's still a bit of a hassle. Should be good for general decryptor-comparing.

i did a paper on eve in my macro-economics class, got a C cause it was turned in a week late, otherwise would of had an A...
Opportunity cost, you guys are narrow... mining vs time? why not throw in this...
in 5 hrs you can make 1.35bn every 30 days selling a block of ice for 150k, with 5 minute cycle times. if you never stop mining and have an alt haul.
you can rat in 0.0 for 5 hrs and make 200-500m or run a plex that takes 4-5 hrs and make 500m-3bn...
you can sit in a trade hub, have items delivered to you and log in once a day to modify prices... 30 minutes, make millions/billions a month...

Does (5 * Mackinaw sell price) - (2 * (Datacore Cost + Decryptor Cost)) - (5 * Build cost at -5ME) get more profit than (1 *Mackinaw sell price) - (3 * Datacore Cost) - Build cost at -4ME? If so, use the decryptor.
Thank you all for some very useful answers and some very obvious trolling :P

Thanks again :)
ME 0 = 10% waste, every -1 adds 10% more so at ME -4 you will have 50% waste

Use a tool that shows you the actual wastage. For T2 Modules the Wastage Factor is often totally irrelevant as it does not change the production costs noticeable. Also 10% base wastage is not true for all item types. (Although it may be true for alle T2 ones).
Stop throwing around the wastage factor without telling what it actually does. Sometimes it's not so simple to calculate the actual wastage (try Electron Bomb).

What's funny is that I think this is all true. Trade is far and away the best money-maker in the game, but it's a difficult thing to learn how to do well. I've been working on this for some time and my eventual goal is to make enough money from trade to be able to play Eve for free forever. We'll see how it goes.

Edited by: RAW23 on 10/05/2010 11:56:41 There is another consideration when using decryptors that has not been mentioned yet: personal efficiency (too early in the day to come up with a decent term for it ). If you just invent and build the odd ship/module in a casual way, then this doesn't really matter. But if you set up a proper production line aiming at maximum efficiency, then it can matter in a couple of ways.
1) Cycle times If you want to log in and queue your build/invention slots on, say, a 12, 18 or 24 hour cycle, for instance, it may be of some help to use decryptors with pe bonuses to bring a given production line into line with your other products (rather than logging in once every 12 hours for production lines a and b but then having to either come back an hour later for line c or leave line c inefficiently empty until the next a/b cycle comes around). Obviously, this is only worth considering if using such a decryptor will not gimp your profits.
2) Slot efficiency A decryptor might reduce your overall profit from a given item but increase your profit per slot. To give an example using old figures I've pulled from a notebook (these figures are at least 8 weeks old and are not to be relied on): inventing and building Med Cargo 2 rigs with no decryptor would have provided a profit of c. 18mil per unit, thus 36mil for 2 build slots (assuming you only set up the queues once a day), 2-3 units being a reasonable amount to sell in one day. On the other hand, inventing with a -3me, 3 run decryptor would allow you to build 3 units in one build slot in one day, yielding a lower total profit and profit margin per unit, 26mil in total, so c. 8.6mil per unit, but a higher profit per slot (26mil as opposed to 18 mil). So the question determining which decryptor to use here is what is at the biggest premium for you? Cash or slots? If you have plenty of cash and are looking for the highest total daily return you can get with your slots, then running one slot at 26mil is probably the best option. If you have more limited cash reserves, on the other hand, and need to maximise the % return on isk invested, rather than the total return, or if you have a surplus of build slots, then you will want to go for the vanilla me -4 no decryptor option.

The people who think mins are free belong in WoW or some other cookie cutter game where their lack of economic sense can allow them to prosper. Only in EVE do accounants talk about how to shave off .5% to increase profitability and then 2 minutes later shout ARRR Matey as they hoist the Jolly Roger. This is why I love EVE.
