Word meanings and pronunciation change over time. Not too hard to believe that in the millennia that its been since the human race left Earth that some words have been changed a bit. Slight variations of words known today? Bingo, says I! Perfect for a human culture displaced from our language by a few thousand years.

Rofl. Well, when I made the corp I had originally thought to make it into an escort service for empire to low sec to 0.0 but that hasn't seemed to pan out, so I turned it into a cat house. ---- Signature Begins ----

They're not even speaking any language that we have today and they've been through a dark age since they left Earth. CCP has said as much.I doubt they're supposed to be the same rocks that we have at all. This is much like Warhammer 40k--High Gothic isn't actually Latin, it just looks to the inhabitants of that world the way Latin looks to us. I distinctly remember a CCP dev saying that ships like "raven" or "eagle" aren't actually named that--they're actually (to the inhabitants of the EVE universe) named for the Caldari word for a similar bird, for instance.
I'm pretty sure they're entirely fictional and just happen to have names made to sound similar to real rocks rather just making things up out of nowhere--especially considering that the characteristics of the rocks of EVE and those in real life are different.

Bit like what happened with the Mitsubishi Starion. Y'just know it should have been called the 'Stallion', but an asian accent got in the way.
Well, I'm glad I'm not the marketing guy that came up Honda ***** (hastily renamed Honda Jazz in Europe) for the Swedish market.

The people of New Eden hadn't seen Germany in 20,000 years. The fact that they got it as close as they did is pretty damn impressive if you want my opinion.

"spar" is 'tree' in Swedish if I remember correctly.
You're not basing that statement on the "Spar" shops are you?
Edit: Clarification. I mean that you didn't just look at the sign and say "Oh that shops logo is a tree, therefore Spar must mean tree".
Actually, a "Spar" in Dutch is a tree with needles, a spruce if i'm not mistaken. So tree would make sense, and the Spar shop logo also still makes sense (in a way that Spruces are always drawn as stacked triangles, and started in the Netherlands.) Since Dutch is a germanic language, i wouldn't be suprised if in Norwegian or German it's similar. Don't know about Swedish though...

From wikipedia. Spaar or spar means "save (money)" in Afrikaans, Dutch, Danish, German, Swedish and Norwegian. "De Spar" is Dutch for "The Spruce", hence Spar's logo.

Let me try my hand at this silliness:
You're Caldari and everyone knows that CCP just spelled "calamari" very very badly and didn't want to change it back, so that means you're really a big marginally intelligent squid.
See how little sense that made?

This thread is epic. Go for it, guys....

The Starion thing is an urban legend, as evidenced by it only being called that in Europe. In the US the same car is sold as a Pontiac somethingorother for example. People at the moment think that whoever named it had seen star wars too many times, with their ships that use ion engines, and called it the Star-Ion. The logo even has stars in it...
The Vauxhall Nova and Chevrolet Nova have urban legends surrounding their name ("no va" = "doesn't go" in spanish) but apparently the language doesn't quite work like that. The nova was called the corsa in spain anyway...
These ones i'm going on memory on so they may be wrong...
Toyota MR2 ("midship runabout 2 seater") was called the MR-S in France as MR2 in french = Emm Err Deaux which sounds like Merdeaux = sh***ty
Mitsubishi Pajero renamed in European market as the Shogun as Pajero in spanish means farm worker, but is a slang term for w****r...
There are probably more. There are some strange car names around anyway. I regularly see Bongo Friendees driving around (they are supposedly very good minivans), and someone in London Bridge has a "mysterious utility vehicle"...
