Server goes down twice in same day and people go nuts. What the hell.
It hardly ever goes down, i cant remember the last time it did in fact. AND CCP keep us pretty updated. One of few games where the developers actualy do that, I know several games where they just keep the player base in the dark the whole time.
Just watch a film or something, come back and it should be up!

In the next 30mins will be at least 4 posts about how CCP can use MsSQL instead of MySQL/ORDB/Oracle/bla blub..
Then there will be 5-6 posts from people telling the first ones idiots and that they don't know how big the DB of eve is and that they make themself look like idiots.
Then there are 2 more posts of people who tell details about their work as DB-admin and that they can understand CCP and wish them good luck.
Then there will be missing: 10 Probes, 2 Marauders, 15 Fighters, 4 Jetcans full with ORE and at least 3 PVP fights where the victim was at 15% structure.
The rest gets filled with the usual rage/fail/need hamsters posts.

But If i remember correctly server crashes have actually been quite common after dominion. I have been afk for some time but I remember server crashing a lot. Before that there wasn't much problems?

Microsoft sql server 2008 is not known for high availabitiy nor high performance
CCP needs to move to a server/database environment that's up to the player numbers.

I love posts like this that come from people who know absolutely nothing about databases. Perhaps you would like to volunteer to translate all the code to a totally different database system, and it must be bug free and cause no down time or this whole thread will be all about you instead of CCP. Oh, and you must provide all the hardware to do it since you can't run two instances of eve on two totally different database products on the same hardware. You think lag is bad now? lol
When eve was invented, mssql was the only db capable of handling eve. The others were too new and too limited. Sure they work great today, but see little kids sometimes can't understand that things were actually different in the past than they are today.
Switching databases would be the absolute worst thing ccp could even think of doing.

Yes, but when EVE development started, they were big unix iron databases and would have cost more than the CEO's fristborn's soul. Money CCP simply did not have.
Apart from that, MSSQL is one of the better products from Redmond.
Interpret that qualifier however you like.

EVE development started in 1999 I believe, on that time the best Microsoft had was SQL Server 7 , meanwhile business of all sizes had Oracle 8.1.7 running reliably for some years already.
I recall being turned down for a job in 1997 because I didn't "know" Oracle, and that was a small engineering firm in Santiago, Chile. If a small business in a third-word country could afford Oracle...

Open Source crap sux most of the time. Very inconsistent and very lacking in quick responses to support issues.
PostgreSQL is a good example of inconsitency in the development of an opensource database. They change their mind about how to handle character encodings on different platforms every other update not to mention how to handle actual sql syntax. It's irritating.
I'll take a purchased piece of software over open source any day.

interesting point you make and i tend to agree with most of it, then ya ruin it by calling people spoiled whining children, keep in mind, said spoiled whining children are paying for the pleasure.
also it doesn't help when ccp call it a failover when it's not, it's a crash, and when the crashes happen regular, people tend to get upset.

Given that CCP have had Microsoft engineers on site and hotpatching SQL Server (or at least they did a little while back, unsure if they are for this set of events), I'd say that the issue almost certainly lies there. And that also voids your point on CCP changing MSSQL's source- they almost certainly have. Large customers like CCP will have either source code access or access to engineers who do have source code and can issue hotpatches.
Databases rarely break. Typically, hardware breaks. Systems like Oracle and PostgreSQL (MySQL too, in the hands of a good engineer) can run without interruption for years on workloads comparable to what CCP is doing. I'd love to see some actual numbers from CCP in terms of queries issued per second, average updates per query, and so on. If hardware doesn't break, then software updates break the system, but systems don't break spontaneously without a trigger. Systems as big as EVE exist, run flawlessly 24/7 for years, and can be done; I do not know of any system that fits this description that uses SQL Server, however.
I really don't care about EVE breaking. Well, I do, because it means I get the occasional API hiccup. But I rarely log in these days, just not enough time to play. But I do care when people get **** just _wrong_ like you have.
