Eve is rather grief proof. Until you take things out of the game.

I couldn't imagine living somewhere without the Castle Doctrine.

The second there is a valid reasoning behind it (profit or the target attracting attention in any way) then it's officially not griefing.
Hunting 2 day old newbs in starter systems brings you nothing, you will gain no profit from it and they didn't have the time to annoy you yet. So that IS griefing.
I agree with the whole killing newbs thing. That said, I was killed within my first 10 mins in game. This was back in the days when friendlycomputerlady sent you to a ded-space to go shoot at "fake" rats. After killing one of said rats friendlycomputerlady then told me to loot it, this I dutifully did, when Boom!
Hmm, seems like my ship has magically transformed into a rather badly painted Easter egg wtf? After a few minutes wondering what the hell just happened I was convo'd by none other than the caracal pilot who had just killed me for looting his wreck
After a very interesting chat during which I learnt a lot about this new game I was trying out, I went off to the forums to learn as much as possible about Eve.
That one experience, while mildly irritating, was probably the most informative moment in my Eve career. At no time did I consider myself as having been "griefed". I suppose "grief" and what we feel/ think it is often depends on our state of mind, and whether or not we can use that experience to better our understanding of the game.
Peace.
That sounds like a positive experience, not griefing. Being killed isn't so bad so long as the person who killed you is a good winner. If the Caracal pilot had been all like: "haha noob you suck go die IRL" then it would suck. Sad thing is, most PvPers in EVE will smacktalk you like that, and GF means "get ****ed" most of the time. Attitude problems FTL

I guess to me Griefing would be where i would chose a farely new guy [i.e. weaker] and then stalk him and pod him as often as possable while stating in private chat with him that i intend to continue to do so till he quit. And i would also insult him in local.
Thats griefing.

It was a positive experience, for me at least. However the caracal pilot pretty much did this for hours at a time. Sitting in a newb area deliberately shooting those who at the time were following the tutorial with little to no knowledge of Eve mechanics. Most people would consider this "griefing", I'm certain the GM's would of done had I petitioned it. At a push I would too. At the time however I did not even consider petitioning this, I felt that the minor inconvenience I suffered was vastly outweighed by the overall benefit to my early knowledge of the game.
Perhaps it's time to make an effort to stamp out the term "griefing" altogether, it is a bit of a misnomer.
Break the rules and you are cheating. Consistently mail/ convo someone in order to threaten and/ or insult them and you are guilty of harassment.
"Griefing" as used by most people in-game or on the forums simply does not exist imho.

Griefing is when you play with the victim.
Shoot them.. be done with it. do not play with your food.

The label griefing is applied anything a person deems unpleasant or not beneficial to their own interests. If they were on the opposite side they would not have those complaints.
This comes from being called a griefer from the most unlikely places like undercutting market orders or refusing to fall into a obvious pvp blob traps. PRAISE THE SCOTTISH FOLD!!
