Hello people of C&P, pirates and carebear readers alike.
I have recently started on a new journey. A journey I never thought I would take, the journey of the cap pilot.
Over my years of playing this game I have been a happy little pirate, hanging around in lowsec, ****ing off people that have wondered in to my systems by podding them and then contracting them back their frozen corpse because its funny. Never once have I felt the urge ship up to something bigger than even a cruiser.
Then the day came, about 2 months ago when I ran out of new things to train on one of my alts. Sure, I COULD get better at all the things I can currently fly.. But who wants to do that?! Its all about the new and shiny things for me, so I took the plunge and starting the long haul to carrier on not one, but 2 of my alts (I didn't want him to get lonely).
So here I sit, 2 months later, with 2 alts that are carrier capable.. One is slightly better than the other but both of them can only just fly the things. Its like starting a new character... So I will admit I can only use about half of the things i want to use. I can only put up 7 fighters with each of them, I'm missing T2 sentry drones on both, I'm missing T2 heavy drones on one (yeah, I didn't think you'd be able to get in to carrier without them either), but I have the cap rep skills and some remote cap rep skills.
And now I have them.. What use are they? They are too large to go roaming in.. They take too long to lock to sit on a gate camp. Fighters cant take gate gun fire anyway.. Oh, and they are a massive target that other pirate gangs love to try and pop.. Its like I have just wasted 2 months of training painting a large target on both of my alts heads..
Yes I know they work well in 0.0 or in large blobs.. But well, everything works well in large blobs and 0.0 is not what im looking for..
So pirate corps of C&P. I know many of you have access to carriers and dreads.. What do you actually use them for?

Edited by: Mutnin on 03/04/2010 01:43:11 The only good use for low sec carriers is dropping some ships and supplies in it and jumping it all to a new system for a nice nomadic op. Typically most low sec carriers I see around, are used by station humping Queens.

I have a capital pilot and I too use him for moving stuff. I am really pleased I got a capital pilot because without him I would have to haul in a lame and uncool way. Oh and I am selling him pretty much because of the points you mention Lana.

Way to plan ahead ^ _^
Take one up to Titan pilot and hotdrop your carrier onto whatever you can bait mining belts in a BC. Enjoy the escalations. Simple.

imo the best use for a lowsec carrier is to hotdrop random solo pilots in belts (after your falcon alt has them jammed ofc).

Yeah, basically this. Historically, mine is pretty much a glorified jump freighter with a better tank and a chance of shooting back (and, ofc, much smaller storage).
imo, one or two carriers aren't assets - they're targets. They are a great motivator for people to strap together a gang to kill them without having the dps to save themselves from said gang. And ones and twos are the usual numbers that you see in lowsec groups. When you have enough of them, there's probably no substitute for a proper carrier energy/rep chain, but in 99% of of lowsec cases, there's also no need for one.

Use one alt to bait people off station then undock the other one drop into triage and rep the other one while that alt and your corp ****s whatever they bring to kill your bait carrier. ...i thought everyone did this with useless carrier alts.

Even in 0.0 you would find they are rare in use. I mean a hotdrop or a call may come in for them once in awhile, unless deployed for some reason. But with moon changes and whatnot it is rare that they are worth risking.(i.e titans) I wish I could go back in time and take the untold millions of sp and time and put it towards making my main a better subcap pilot. With the AE DD gone you can reinforce Sov mods and POS's with sniper/drake gangs. (alt)

Could use it for some station games.
It's also pretty fun to give fighters to frigates in your corp and just have them run around the system ganking people with 'em. Kills your KB points, though, but it's pretty funny :P ♦♦♦♦♦

I'm sad now. I thought the Republic Military Skool is full of wisdom and awesomeness and would never attempt to get into capital crap.
Lana, everyone who ever owned a cap could've told you that it's a huge disappointment, unless you have a massive corp to hotdrop the **** out of stuff and take on the other side's escalations - or enjoy constant POS warfare (like some real sickos out there). I bet you knew that before training the skills; deep down in your rather soft heart (for a piwat). Mh, I still think you're the Cat o'Ninetails of C&P just with less rancid or whatever it's called. ;_;
Anyways, my attempt at constructive feedback:
In my opinion the main purpose to train the cap skills is to steal the ships from strange people after gaining their trust or infiltrating their corps with alts. Kind of like that:
"Hey, what's that like to pilot a Chimera, lovely miner? That's cool. You should get some DG Invulns and other decent fit and stable the carrier safely at your awesome 2-gun 'deathstar' POS in that nice system next door because my alt has your forcefield PW. Thehee ^___^"
They all make for decent profit - be it dread, carrier or freighter alike. In case you can't bring them out of the system alive, just insurance-fraud them (until the nerf). :3

My alt has a carrier too, with approximately the same skills. I see the carrier as a giant ship taxi, pretty much.

Join a 0.0 alliance and go pew pew lots of fun to be had. Also do plexes in 0.0 with your carrier is lots of isk xD. Try to find a system that only has one gate and get your alt to sit cloaked on the gate to watch for enemy ships.

I am currently training for a thanny, would never use it in combat as I see it being totally useless in my hands as I am a solo player (I dont like people, esp fat ones) so I am only training it for the pure fact of moving **** to other lowsecs/0.0 NPC regions.
Would get a JF but 5bil, cant even defend itself in the slightest, useless for what I want to do lol, only difference is it can jump as soon as it undocks from 4-4 :p.

Edited by: Sorted on 03/04/2010 14:43:00 Triage carrier support for small gate camps, best thing a pirate can have. (aside from a tackler!)
leave a BS in the maint bay, hot drop when a hostile gang jumps ya, your tackler or support webs switch out for a BS, your DPS BS drop personal reps and refit from the carriers corp hangers for extra damage, your triage carrier keeps everyone alive and your 10 man gang wade in to 40 over confident (non-neut carrying) titan bridge'd BS's....

Carrier's are awesome. Move your stuff around, use it as a mobile base in 0.0, hot-drop stuff, Triage mode, there's loads of handy uses for a carrier.
