lets nostalgia about what eve was like when you joined, sometime I miss the old ways things were but for the most part eve has improved a lot since then
when I joined in 2006 it was just after red moon rising, tech 2 ships were new, and capitals, pos warfare and moon mining had just been introduced
> hurricane, harbinger, drake, myrmidon, abaddon, rokh, maelstrom and hyperion did not exist
> there was no overloading, and modules has a solid green background
> the UI was static, it was not adjustable, the overview was on the left and the drone and fleet windows underneath it, the centre display of the UI could not be moved about and everything often overlapped but it was still fine
> the Eos and Vagabond were the most feared ships, and they were about 250 mil
> there have been multiple HP boosts since, and battlecruisers had about 2k or 3k armour, you could nearly rep all the shields on a cyclone in one burst
> t3 ships, electronic attack ships, black ops, marauders and heavy interdictors did not exist
> no titan had been built, only a handful of motherships were in service, it would be 7 or 8 months before the first titan was to be built, piloted by cyvok of ASCN
> active tanking was the way to go, dual rep megathrons were fearsome
> there was no faction warfare, low sec around amamake and egghelende were death traps
> the stabber was a very popular ship, lots of people flew them in pvp
> nosferatu would drain cap like a neut does now, nos domi and nos cyclone were super powerful ships
> warp core stabs didnt mess up your scan res and range, a vagabond was often fit with 2 warp core stabs
> the scanner had a little map on it with a display of the system you were in, like the minimap when you press F11 has now, except it was built into the scanner
> the scanner could spot NPC's in belts, I remember roaming low sec scanning out faction spawns in a stabber
> webs had 90% strength, if you got webbed there was not much chance of getting away unless you webbed back MWD'd like a nutter, MWD's couldnt be shut down
> the zealot had 4 guns, the eagle had 4 guns, the sacrilege, damnation and malediction were laser boats
> nanophoon's were everywhere, bumping was everywhere, you could bump anything off a station with a nanophoon, you could fly it like a vagabond with torps and nos, vagabonds could hit 8,000 or 9,000 m/s if you spent the money on them
> and most importantly, the cyno effect was an awesome cone tunnel of lightning that made the screen shake

The main thing I remember when I started playing was that there was no warp to zero, that sucked and made traveling multiple systems a pain. Many people had bookmarks along their frequent traveled routes so they could land on or close to gates.
Eve was much harder back then but that is what made me subscribe.

There was 9k people on peak nights
Lag was unbearable
Players could steal any and everything,no flagging
CNR was a rare sight as did all navy ships for that matter
No skill queuing,as a nOOb,the alarm clock skill switch was the norm

I joined in 2004, things I remember
- Zombies being banned for tanking concord on the gate at Yulai while pew pewing noobies (I managed to get away) - slow boating to everywhere where you didn't have bm's at the gates (eve universe felt very big back then) - No T2 - Seeing a battleship was quite a big deal and wondering how you'd ever afford one even bigger - Tank CEO being one of the most respected PvP'ers (still around I see) - Travel hubs, like Pator, which were forever crashing and people getting stuck in the system, or undocking - CCP putting up a message on the Sunday night when we broke 10000 concurrently logged in users - ravens kicking ass in PVP (not like now) - Cruisers that could fire Torpedoes and they would decimate any PVE rat - The cruise missile skill being rank 6 and training it to level 5 only to see them getting nerfed a patch later - m00 being the bad ass pirate corp (they even still around?) - CCP Kieran - sensor dampeners with infinite range - and much much more...

Edited by: Melor Rend on 07/04/2010 14:54:00 Torps (and missiles in general) hitting all targets (no matter how small) for full damage.... *wipes mouth on his sleeve*
Or when fielding more then 30 people was considered blobbing (though I believe we didn't actually call it that back then).
Ahh... the good old times.
Edit: a further great one was also:
tutorial agents that sent noobs to lowsec for their first mission... rofl. And then being insta-wtf-bbq'ed by a full-rack-of-heatsinks geddon on the gate. Epic.

many of the things gneez said but some other fun things like undockign from jita and waiting for privateers to pop someone and ninja'ing the t2 mods and making good money for a noob.
myrmidon and eos were usefull ships salvaging and loot/can baiting in the tutorial complex ( first nooby pvp experience and hatemail) salvage was very profitable (tripped circuits i think were 140k each)

Ravens still kick ass in pvp, just not solo.
Also last time I checked most of the m0o guys had run off to play potbs, the only member of that corp I've spoken to in ages buys and sells so many characters I don't even know who his current character is >_>
As for the topic at hand:
I started playing back in 06, literally a month before they started giving people 800k SP at startup (and we had no increased skill training time, so I had about 800k SP when they made the change...was not happy about that )
Tier 2 BCs and tier 3 BSs wouldn't be coming out for another few months, no one had any titans yet (least I don't think so, ASCN may have pumped theirs out already) and there was no wtz. But, I think the most important thing that I miss more than anything else: They had snowballs that didn't melt a week after christmas. Within my first month of playing I had roughly 70mil to my name, after I discovered snowballs I literally spent 50mil of it on the buggers, they were so much fun :D |

Cap ships could use acceleration gates I remember tagging along as a looter behind a Thanatos doing lvl 4 missions.
Cap ships could be built in Hi sec and jumped to lo/null sec.

back when I first played the game at release, before quitting in 2004:
No Sentry Guns in low-sec When you jumped through a gate you didn't appear on the other side, but at a moon Armour Tanking didn't exist Basic Insurance didn't exist Insurance lasted 5 days only BS Rats didn't exist L4 Missions didn't exist Battlecruisers didn't exist Destroyers didn't exist Mining Barges didn't exist No Stacking Penalties Only 'safe' ways to get ISK were hi-sec mining, industry and trading Battleships were a rare sight

a few others I could think of
> warp disruptors didnt come in t2, only t1 and no overloading, so 20km warp disruption range was the hard limit, except for arazu/lach
> torpedoes went nearly as far as cruise, but they were very slow, and did a bit extra damage
> multispecs on everything, multispec caracal's and domi's were common, dominix would often combine warp core stabs, nos and multispecs to be an unstobble lol-machine
> gangs had no structure, whoever gave out the best relevant bonus's to a gang just gave them as soon as they joined, there was no need for rank 8 and rank 12 leadership skills
> learning skill had to be at lvl 5 to train the tier 2 learning skills
> there were no scripts, remote damps were very powerful, but ECM was even worse (its gone through 2 or 3 nerfs since then)
> people flew the deimos, it was respected as a blaster ship, now nobody flies it really
> the hurricane was nearly released with 7 turrets and the harbinger with 8, but a lot of forum complaints caused them to be pre-nerfed a little (they are still great ships though obviously)
> nobody used afterburners, nobody used warp scramblers
> the arbitrator could field 75m3 of drones, tracking disruptors didnt have scripts
> covert ops ships had the old models (vigil with a big sensor dish on the front for the cheetah) and looked a lot better
> the nightmare was a 4 turret 4 launcher ship like the typhoon, and it was an armour tanker with 7 lows, it fitted 4 lasers and 4 torps, and rich people would fly them like nano-phoons with nos and torps

Heh...I remember beta and not liking the game very much. I was more interested in another game I was playing at the time and really didn't want to spent what little free time I had split between the two...so EVE lost (at first). Later, more of my friends left the one game for EVE and I ended up following. I just started a new character at that time (which I have since sold, much to my daily regret).
Things I remember from rejoining the game not long after EVE went live...
Alliances before there was a game mechanic for them. Fountain Alliance, Curse Alliance, Stain Alliance...just to name a very few.
The Great Northern War.
Old-school gankageddons with lows filled with heat sinks that didn't suffer stacking penalties.
Pre-RMR missiles. I've fired very few torps and even fewer cruise missiles since the RMR patch...heheh. I haven't owned a Raven since the patch.
Yulai was the trade hub. Jita was busy, but I remember Yulai as being the main trade hub.
Frequent in-game faction "events" and the ability to interact with CCP representiatives acting on behalf of the various factions. I think these things still happen but it seems very rare.
The very first Alliance Tournament and what a thing of wonder it was.
"Bookmarking" everything for travel. Gates...stations...belts.
Scanning all of Fountain Region's moons when moon-mining hit the game. I was in FA at the time.
The Apocalypse was the mining ship. Highs filled with Miner IIs. High-sec belts were always filled with mining Apocs and anchored Giant Secure Containers.
Old style officer spawns in 0.0 that could actually kill you and were fairly hard to solo and making about a billion and a half isk off of the drop the first time I got Cormack Vaaja. That was a lot by the standards of the time. I almost had to warp out a few times because my tank was breaking. These days, tanking Serpentis is laughable.
Mining for a building my first Raven. Flying it into battle against a trio of the aforementioned old-style Gankageddons and watching it melt in seconds. Haven't really mind much since then except for a few corp/alliance ice mining ops.
Getting a note from one of my Research Agents that I had been awarded a Covert Ops Cloak II BPO...a DAY after my offer expired. I was out of town on vacation with no i-net access. Back then, these things were a pittance to build and selling for very large sums. I was sick to my stomach...and still feel a twinge every time I think about it.
There were no battlecruisers or destroyers in the game. T2 ships were rare. Battleships were pretty much king. The artillery Tempest was ascendant. Stradivarious/Polaran sitting hundreds of KM off a gate insta-popping things was a thing of beauty.
Burn Eden visiting Fountain and making us look very bad.
I'll add more as and if I think of them.

I recall having a Thorax was the best thing ever, and was mining in it, with 8 heavy drones as defence :)
I recall being able to fit 2 mwd's to a battleship and go so fast it was unreal!
A very early memory too was playing on Sunday and a pop up saying "omfg we hit 5600 people online!"

- You needed lv 4 science to use a tractor beam. - Tech 2 cost an arm and a leg to buy. - no warp to zero. you had to make bookmarks 15KM ahead of your gate and warp to your bookmark at 15KM. - Ice belts in empire were still spawning. - no contracts. it was called escrow. - mission agents were in Trade hubs (Jita)
And much much more.

when you could equipped and activate multiple MWDs. a Scorpion could MWD faster than warp speed for a few seconds.
When 0.0 spawns were actually hard. If you didn't kill them fast enough, more and more would spawn on top of you. Eventually you'd have a dozen BS and 20 frigs/cruisers shooting your ass.
Dreads/carriers barely had more HP than a BS, and a minmatar deathstar's artillery could insta pop them if several guns fired on the same target. . Domis/vexors could field 15 drones. All other ships could field 10.
Cruise missile Kestral was king of PvP.
0.0 was safer than highsec, because it was so empty you'd rarely run into anyone, and there were only 2-3 stations per region.
Sniping BS could insta lock your pod and pop you (no scrips)
There were no rigs or rig slots.
You had to stagger your missiles because if you fired them too close together they would blow each other up and not do damage.
Missiles had LoS and would hit the first thing in its path, regardless if you were targeting it or not.
All gun ammo did the same damage, So there was no reason not to use the longest ranged ammo.
Lots lots more, some of which has already been said, some of which I can't think of. Oh no you don't! Incoming witty reply, ETA: 300 seconds! |

Knowing absolutely nothing, i looked at them from my little velator, i was thinking how u'bber powerfull those guys must be
Another two from before you were born: remember one of the ccp devs joining our npc corp channel in the first few weeks of the game, thanking us for joining/playing.
2003 was absolutely fantastic for hauling your stuff up from 0.0. Back in the day the world/american playerbase was a very small percentage compared to us euro's, you could afk a loaded alt up... only around 1000 logged on between 5-8.00 gmt:) ______ Your signature was a freakishly huge image and needed to be nerfed. When I joined in "Cold War" the Dreadnaught was still the first and only capital ship (not counting freighters). I think the Moros was able to use +5 more Drones with each new Skill Level on top of the 10 standard drones.
The first capital ships were build and losing a Dreadnaught, or having one stolen was CAOD-worthy news.
Thorax having 8 Heavy Drones!
Oursulaert was a new trade hub and second only to Jita.
16k users online was a new record, but when more 100 people were inside a system, even with with most of them idle, lag was unbearable.
A feeling of emptiness, just moving a few jumps away from the hubs and main routes you could be the only one in the system. 0.0 still felt like a frontier.

- Mining Ark in (Rancer?) something beginning with R...
- Armaggedon day when we all got max skills etc.
Release:
(tough to remember now!)
- Having NO autopilot / warp to zero / auto-dock. It was all manual. - Having to type /cmd autopilot on in chat to switch on the autopilot - Everyone was aiming for Armageddon / Apoc as they were the best mining ships. - CU Vapor miners we're 5M / unit and that was CRAZY expensive. - Good mid-range ship was the Thorax. - Badass Cruiser rats. - Iteron V was THE industrial ship to have, but took forEVER to train for. - No Advanced Learning skills, Implants... nothing. - Implants handed out as specific agent rewards after running 200 missions. - Concord agents - Agent bribing to raise standing - L3 agents were the best. - No Shuttles - Interbus (Never worked) - No clone jumping - The 3D Radar ( I want that back! )

Ahhhh... Eve in 2004...
When men where men, and women where men as well... Curse alliance was the big boy on the block and they were just a bunch of corps cuz there weren't even alliance systems in place...
Inties and AF's where the only T2 ships and BS where the biggest ships in game and u would gaze in awe at them.
Lots of systems where empty, u could spend days in them without seeing a single other soul... and 0.0 was still worth fighting for... and u could actually go there as a noob without running into a gatecamp with bubbles and other crap the first jump...
sigh... yes, i must admit, i think eve was a better place then, less asshats too, but, one cannot stop progress... ________________________________________________

'The Great Northern war' was kicking off when i started - this got me into politics ingame, the bad feelings there ran very deep and still reverberate even now :)lol remember being given a frigate and told go there :) Also remember the then NC fighting PA & Curse and Evolution were fightin' alongside the then North with Jade (before Evol created BoB and entered Fountain. - Yulai and Zombies, Battles against FE in Tribute, - The Five - Mines - great fun with concorde when a forgotton mine u owned went off while u was in Empire and running from concorde (like a Benny hill moment, - so many great moments tbh but the ones that stand out more for me was with Cereal killerz and Rocko Monkeybone, Fountain Alliance moving out of Fountain, ASCN folding, - lots of battles later on in Delve/Fountain where CODA kicked FIX and just before they totally crumbled BOB helped them (after BoB popped a Egg) another historical moment was ECP8R where BoB & ASCN shut off that system and well destroyed everything destroyable, - another Alliance which i miss are the MC whatever pilots want to believe they were kick ass, oh and thinking of the MC - can art :)that shark was cool, - sorry its not all in date order but these memories are just flooding through :)

Yeah, can art! That's one I can remember (Late late '07/ Trinity newb).
Anchored cans and abandoned ships in safe spots used to be permanent unless destroyed by players, as opposed to disappearing after 30 days of no interaction.
That resulted in people spending hours making elaborate designs AND in the Molea cemetery, where some guy collected a bunch of corpses and anchored them in cans at a ringed gas giant. It was a long line of cans of corpses, kind of cool looking -- then post-nerf the guy put up a POS and moved the cans there to keep them from going poof.
Goons destroyed the POS and the cemetery with it in September of '08.

It was 2008 right after Empryean Age.
-People were whining about the nano nerf. -There were no skill queues. -Orca didn't exist yet. -Unholy Rage hadn't happened. (In fact, after I quit Eve. Unholy Rage news got me interested in coming back). -Character creation was a complex affair with consequences for wrong choices. -Achura were everywhere. -BoB and Goonswarm still in the game.

scary as hell. was out in losec on my second day and started dodging the sharks of the deep. no scripts, no scrambler changes, polycarbon was the king of rigs and speed was the king of combat. nanoishtars incredibly difficult to kill and 13 km/s interceptors weren't totally uncommon. curse was a battlefield of small entities flying mostly nanogangs, and boy was being a nanocurse pilot fun :) nub> you cant mine so you kill. |

Neutral players would automaticly be tought about as friends, piracy were in general frowned upon and there was no official alliances as i can recall. Also POS's were rather new. Oh and a corp member was so proud to be the first one to have a REAL mining ship (barge) and they changed the whole how you had to click around to see your high/med/low slots like two days after i started :) Yulai was the main trade hub,mOo was still around and syndicate was the ultimate pirate heaven and creating gate to gate bookmarks was an art. Ohh and think that the 5k people online record was set around then as well.
I miss being new and how exiting everything was back then :)

anyway it had like 3 buttons that u had to press to acces the low/med/high slots and during fleet fights u had to pick one to use cuz as soon as lag hit you couldnt change it
the REAL gankageddon with 8x heatsinks NO STACKING PENALTY (give back plz)
dual MWD thoraxes with 10x heavy drones (win)
Domis with 15x drones
that silly target Ring that only showd your targets shield and armor not the hull dmg
NO FOOOOKIN POS's :D
PVP'rs were forgiven if they were cought mining cuz it was the only way to make isk rly
taking 15 mins to take a station with 10-20 BS's
The first and ONLY Great Northern War (seriusly call ur wars sumthing else) with COD (Coalition of Dekline) FU (Fade Union) NORAD (dont remember if it ment sumthing lol) forming the NCA (Northern Coalition of Allies) against the south forces then merging with Unicorn (think i have it right) into the NSA (North star alliance or sumthing as silly) in the fight for 3JN, that concluding the Great northern war shortly after

BC's didn't exist (or maybe they did, I forget).
There wasn't much T2, T2 was expensive as hell.
Cruisers were respected and good ships.
Jita wasn't a trade hub (i used to hang around in sobaseki, jita and nonni... each had at best 45 people in local... tops on a busy day), freighters were the biggest ships there were, outside of carriers and dreads. Motherships hadn't yet been produced, or if there were any, there weren't many yet.
I remember watching the BOB/T2 thing go down on the forums.
CCP Kieron was interesting.
Devs had and commonly used jovian forum avatars.
ISD player forum moderators and their editing of sigs to have colored text.
I remember watching several of the old events teams events go down on an alt.
I remember watching the old U'K/CVA/PIE wars on the IGS, all of the events that took place around it, too.
24-48 hour patch days.
I remember reading all of the news about the scorpion being released and the story behind it, and who otro gariushi was.
I remember watching the drama around the first titan builds, and the wars to destroy them before they were launched.
I remember watching MC roll D2.
I remember ASCN collapsing because of Cyvok.
I used to mine in my imicus in jita and sobaseki with someone who was in a hulk at the time, i made what I believed to be a lot of money (it wasn't)
CCP Mitnal raging about random stuff.
CCP Kieron playing PR to make up for Mitnal (or, TomB, at times)
No salvaging yet
no wrecks (just cans)
no fleets (gangs, instead)

Edited by: Unkn0wn on 08/04/2010 10:10:22 Memory Lane,
For me the early days were the best :)
First day, Ninja mining with my corp from Beta in 0.4 trying to save up get an indy then start saving for BPOs. Should have just gone stright to 0.0, Ninja mining high-ends in a system with a station was magical.
First 2 months, Moving to Fountain, the first few months where m0o became feared, me and some friends would attack them when bored with rookie ships just to get a kill mail from m0o. CCP told them to stop shoting rookie ships as it was hurting new players and so we waited till they came to fountain. Just m0o in general for being a great force in the early days.
My First Apoc, had to be one of the first 50 on the server, spent weeks mining for that beat, and then almost lost it to chain spawning for 4 hours, saved by the friendly entity before he got removed from the game.
Being Part of BoB from the start, never have a been part of a group that has been so focused for so long.
Tech 2 was unheard off, BS did not exist and were being sold to the player base as Corprate assests (much like caps ships how),
Research slots in empire were everywhere :P
The Market was non existent for a while
Playing around in 0.0 with little to no fear with a BS.
Chain Spawning was great,
Mining in hidden belts with station in system (it was that good I should say it again)
Travel distance, Eve was massive, no warp to 0, I remember when 30 jumps would take over an hour :/

- was in 0.0 after 3-4 weeks and made my 1st Bil with selling Region BM sets to alliance members as warp to 0 wasnt yet introduced. - Tempest was king of every fleet battle - Vagabond ( 250mil ) with dual stabs was nearly untouchable - Carriers could enter static 0.0 plexes and over those was heavy fighting after every DT as they were goldmines ( Hi Hedgehogs in a Fog ) - saw the 1st Titan ingame just 1 hour after he came out of the oven - 15 - 20k max ppl online on a weekend - Cmdr Woodlouse was still playing - Backdoor Bandit made epic threads on CAOD - no Dronelands - saw RED being pushed back to 1 system and comeback from nearly dead - Burn Eden racking up kills with stabbed dampening cruise ravens for month - T2 1400mm howis 15mil, T2 Expanded Cargohold 20mil - Hulks 400-500mil

My fond memories of early-EvE:
1) You'd route travel through 0.0 to avoid all the gate camps in empire space.
2) Corp mining ops had everyone in a frig and you'd mine for a week to get the minerals for a cruiser.
3) Warp to 15 meant you needed bookmarks for everything. Station instas were for docking not undocking.
4) The radio telescope! A lvl 1 mission that made you kill a structure with like 15K HP.
5) The "hi-sec ore nerf" meant that the best you could find was now hedbergite.

Originally by: Gneeznow lets nostalgia about what eve was like when you joined, sometime I miss the old ways things were but for the most part eve has improved a lot since then
when I joined in 2006 it was just after red moon rising, tech 2 ships were new, and capitals, pos warfare and moon mining had just been introduced
> hurricane, harbinger, drake, myrmidon, abaddon, rokh, maelstrom and hyperion did not exist
> there was no overloading, and modules has a solid green background
> the UI was static, it was not adjustable, the overview was on the left and the drone and fleet windows underneath it, the centre display of the UI could not be moved about and everything often overlapped but it was still fine
> the Eos and Vagabond were the most feared ships, and they were about 250 mil
> there have been multiple HP boosts since, and battlecruisers had about 2k or 3k armour, you could nearly rep all the shields on a cyclone in one burst
> t3 ships, electronic attack ships, black ops, marauders and heavy interdictors did not exist
> no titan had been built, only a handful of motherships were in service, it would be 7 or 8 months before the first titan was to be built, piloted by cyvok of ASCN
> active tanking was the way to go, dual rep megathrons were fearsome
> there was no faction warfare, low sec around amamake and egghelende were death traps
> the stabber was a very popular ship, lots of people flew them in pvp
> nosferatu would drain cap like a neut does now, nos domi and nos cyclone were super powerful ships
> warp core stabs didnt mess up your scan res and range, a vagabond was often fit with 2 warp core stabs
> the scanner had a little map on it with a display of the system you were in, like the minimap when you press F11 has now, except it was built into the scanner
> the scanner could spot NPC's in belts, I remember roaming low sec scanning out faction spawns in a stabber
> webs had 90% strength, if you got webbed there was not much chance of getting away unless you webbed back MWD'd like a nutter, MWD's couldnt be shut down
> the zealot had 4 guns, the eagle had 4 guns, the sacrilege, damnation and malediction were laser boats
> nanophoon's were everywhere, bumping was everywhere, you could bump anything off a station with a nanophoon, you could fly it like a vagabond with torps and nos, vagabonds could hit 8,000 or 9,000 m/s if you spent the money on them
> and most importantly, the cyno effect was an awesome cone tunnel of lightning that made the screen shake
I joined in Oct 06, this is pretty much my experience to the dot.

everyone goes on about eves learning curve, well a few months after release there was little forum activitly, few guides and space was empty and lonely.
imagine starting in a system, with no one else around, no starter tutorial (or at least one that was easy to find).
took me a few hours to work out just how to leave the system!
shield 'tanked' everything, aka cap rechargers and a shield booster.
fear my 8 heavy drone, mining shield tanked rax! took me sooooo long to mine for the rax with the bantam i had before it, shield tanked, naturally.
superhardcore tanked, near impossible to kill zero stacking penelty scorps.... 4 invuls with no stacking = 99% resists....

Ah...I can still fondly recall my nos/ecm arbi. Not as great as a NOS/ECM Curse of course but still pretty good for a T1 Cruiser!
And insta bookmarks - ah god how I hated those. You basically had to have an insta for every gate in low or null sec: and if you moved regions youd lose a couple of nights play just copying them all from whomever you'd managed to get them off.
So some good, some bad but it was still EVE pretty much as we know it today.

Gneez sums up a lot of the points I remember fondly (or not so fondly).
> T R U S T making the first commercial Cap ship sale and BOB swiftly moving in and destroying the operation.
> ISS Borealis in P2-TTL and the rest of their free trade 0.0 outposts.
> Using an istab, shield myrm with lasers and heavy drones for long term ratting in hostile 0.0. The agility on these was awesome.
> Damps used to be good. I used to use a damping Helios for pro tackling. Also pre-damp nerf I remember safespot busting an Astarte down in a Celestis, landing on it at 0 and screwing my cap badly mwding out of his range while backup came from 4 jumps out. That was exhilarating .
> None of this probing out ships. Safespot busting was the way to do things.
> Tiller and crew camping Egghellende endlessly, and being the worst poster on the forums.
> BOB owning a large proportion of the sov map.
> Lots more people ratting in low sec (just not around the hotspots)
> No HICs, might not have been dictors either. Certainly no tier 2 bc or tier 3 battleships etc etc.
> Static 10/10 plex farming
> Tech II loot being much more significant for pirates. Cap recharger II's costing 25m etc
> Drop and scoop of drones so any ship with a drone bay big enough could have a full flight or heavy drones
> I was in Youwhat at some point, fleet ops in half German / half English were quite something
Edit:
> No EFT :P
> engine trails
> When was it that splash damage was around and someone managed to pod themselves with their last volley? lol ----

Ah...I joined in 2004 and came back in 2006 with this toon. But I do remember
-No lvl 5 skills at first...all the skills you had were at 1 to 3 depending on what job you picked
-Pirates popped noobies and then gave them helpful info on what not to do (etiquette was amazing)
-PIE liked to fight my one man corp and didnt make excuses like they do now (what happened I liked you guys :( )
-Cyno's looks so awsome...big swirly magic blob that made the screen all shaky and awsome
-Jumping looked awsome...the new gate bubble is ok but meh...the cap ship jumping should have stayed as an awsome tunnel thing
-Titan Jumpbridges looked awsome...Titan poking its head out of the cyno to unleash hell was AWSOME
-The new ship cloack effect is cool....but I miss the way it would start that the front and kinda move back
-m0r3 graphical stuff...the ammar carrier actually had lights...and really cool lightning arcs underneath it.
-warping to 15km...that was scary and made for some awsome scary GTFO moments
-Fighting 15 guys in my Navy Apoc with only a guardian as my cap charger...poor thing took like 200k dmg before it popped at a gatecamp (I told my corpmate that it was cool and he left....stupid mistake :( )
-People actually fought you if you can flipped them...now they cry
-NOS...omg I loved my NOS recon ships...ultra range, using the implants that gave better energy emmision thingies...sucked anyone dry and watched as my 10 drones killed em
-10 drones....i miss em
I dunno what else...I still love this game and will very likely keep playing untill it somehow dies off in like 2100 or something, but I hope the nerf bat stops swinging at some point ------------------- To bring equality to the world, if your character is female then you will now have a female corpse when podkilled.. What will CCP think of next? |

April 06'.... those were the days. Loved snowballs and shooting noobs to get them to shoot back and get CONCORDed... Lulz.
I can't believe no one mentioned this, but when Drones would randomly attack your gangmates for fun. That was f-in hilarious.

2004 - so same as the 2004 guys plus
- An exploding Jove, I have some of his skin :P - T2 BPO lottery....won it twice :P Sold one for 300 mil (again big money) - In my first week winning 7 mil from EVE radio (big money in those days) - ninja mining 0.0 space - low sec was safe to mine/rat in without any bother (14K people max online :P)
- Playing again in 2009 I had to clear out all my 0km jump bookmarks, they were also worth their weight in isk too, people used to sell quick routes (if you trusted them) - EVE Radio army 50+ frigs flying into 0.0 space to get blown up by battleships :P - Mining in my mega with full t2 miners :P
Take comfort in knowing that its probably some pimply faced twit, or 40 year old virgin, who gleens everytime mommy offfers to take them to needle point lessons |

ECM mods were stronger by far, there was no low slot Signal Distortion Amp module, and warp core stabs had no penalties...
So that let me to fly a warp core stabbed scorpion solo all the time through gate camps, out into 0.0, etc. Usually I could warp from anything, and what I couldn't I would just jam enough tackle so I could and turn on 2 large smart bombs :) Much hilarity came from this ship fit.
Oh and torps went further if I remember, so the damn thing could hit harder at an ok range.

Exodus...
Being in awe of someone who could fly a battleship. An Arbitrator that could field ten drones. Drones with huge volumes. Static omber sites in 0.8 space.
And best of all: AURORA.

I remember emptiness. Empty 0.0 belts and only a few NPC BS, which where pretty dangerous being in a frigate :P
Oh, that would be 2003 about a month after EVE started ;) *Pokes cane at youngsters* __________________________________________________________________________

March 16, 2005.
The depths of space.
Cistuvaert.
The station lets out a solemn groan as one of the new pilots takes the helm of a rookie ship.
"A dark day for mankind as we know it" murmured his tutor as ThaMa left the briefing room.
Since then things have changed, space seems smaller, despite even growing almost exponentially... New ships to fly, new mods to use, and still no bugger knows how everything works, not even CCP...
I remember how it started, it was a feat when we had over 5k online, now it is 50k... We used to think Thoraxes were the sh!t, now they are sh!t... We used to have fun helping each other and making big plans and learning, now we are perma-noobs and wde know nothing until someone tells us otherwise...
It is somewhat refreshing to see things haven't changed, and others have... /profound
Eve has changed, in most parts for the better, and I am still going to love it and read as much as possible for the future generations...
I have a feeling there will be a lot more to come.

- Aligning to something meant finding it in space and double-clicking near it. - Learning the Salvaging skill gave me an ISK boost as trit bars were 475K a pop. - Vagabonds were The Sh1znit... I knew I wanted one though had no clue how I could ever afford one. - Heavy Interdictors were still The New Thing from Trinity. - With the Classic client, one could play EVE on an ancient computer. - Polycarbon Engine Housing rigs turned any ship into a Formula 1. They were priced accordingly at around 60m ISK. Which meant... - Nano-fits were the rage.
Edit: @CCP: censorship blows chunks.

- no market in space (Trade was only possible in stations) - no Trade skills - no POS - no Outpost building - no Jumpdrives - no T2 Ships - the STOP sign (for stopping the ship) - another EVE Voice (much more vibrant and not so sleepy "Warp Drive activated") - no T2 ships if I remember correctly
first expansion was Exodus

I got thrown MAX_INT billion au in some random direction, where all the planetary icons where condensed into a single dot.
In my filthy newb excitement, it took me a full 3 hours of warping at 2au/s before I realized something might be wrong. I asked a dev in the channel, he told me to remake my character. So I spent another hour remaking my character perfectly. Warped to an asteroid belt in my Ibis and crashed - server went down. Playerwipe and no uptime for several days.
What glorious memories ;|
